Chapter 64 Buddha Did Not Know
Even endless time and space cannot obstruct the Buddha's gaze. In a distant island nation, a bespectacled, balding middle-aged man felt a jolt run through his body.
"It must be some comic book fan cursing me again," the middle-aged man sighed, then put down his paintbrush and stretched.
Having found another reason to relax, the resentful cartoonist smiled smugly.
But the next moment, a question popped into his mind: "When will Detective Conan end?"
"Ah, I must be hallucinating from too much stress," the middle-aged man said, touching his thinning hair.
But soon, the same question popped into my head again: "When will Detective Conan end?"
"How annoying! How could I possibly end Detective Conan? It's my livelihood! Even if I have to end it, I should at least be able to create another classic work!" the middle-aged man said to the voice in his head, clearly annoyed.
After he finished speaking, he paused for a moment, wondering if he was really under too much pressure and hallucinating.
After waiting for a while, they found that the strange sound did not reappear.
The middle-aged man breathed a sigh of relief, then hesitated for a moment before picking up his paintbrush again, muttering to himself, "I should finish this chapter first. Sigh, the fans' resentment is enough to cause hallucinations; it's terrifying."
He had no idea he had just had a conversation with a powerful being who could see through the three thousand worlds; otherwise, he would probably regret it to death. Putting everything else aside, being able to communicate directly with this person was an immense blessing, especially since the other party was asking for his help.
Make a wish to this person, and the ending of Detective Conan will be nothing to worry about.
But life has no "what ifs," and Buddha didn't mean to force anyone to do anything.
Withdrawing his gaze that had illuminated the entire world, Buddha said to Kasyapa, "Detective Conan is not over yet."
After saying this, the Buddha entered a meditative state once again.
It's not that Buddha couldn't find the answer through divination, but time was running out. With these rounds of messages being relayed, dawn was approaching for Guan Bo, and he definitely wouldn't be able to deduce the final outcome by then.
Kasyapa was taken aback. Wasn't this answer tantamount to the Buddha admitting that he didn't know?
The phrase "no ending" is essentially the same as "I don't know when the finale will happen."
Kasyapa was completely stunned; he was shocked by the scene he had conjured up in his mind: "Even the Buddha didn't know."
Although it was the decree of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, it was able to stump the Buddha. Doesn't that mean that Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's wisdom has surpassed that of the Buddha?
In an instant, Kasyapa's mind was filled with all sorts of earth-shattering fantasies. It was unclear how the Venerable One had developed such a habit of imagining things.
Forcing himself to remain calm, Kasyapa took his leave from the Buddha.
Ananda had practiced with Kasyapa for many years and immediately saw through Kasyapa's impropriety.
"What? You look like the Buddha at Nirvana." Ananda was a man of few words, and he could say anything without thinking.
"Thus have I heard. This question... even the Buddha did not know the answer."
Thus I have heard: This means that I listened carefully to the Buddha's teachings and then wrote them down. This is the opening format of many Buddhist scriptures, and most of the questions and answers with the Buddha follow this process.
However, Kasyapa didn't care about any formalities at this point and only told Ananda what he had imagined.
"You mean, even Buddha couldn't answer?" Ananda was equally shocked.
“Yes, otherwise I wouldn’t be so surprised,” Kasyapa said helplessly.
Without continuing the discussion with Ananda, Kasyapa first reported the matter to Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva.
But perhaps because his feelings were too complicated, Kasyapa replied with the words: "Even the Buddha does not know when his end will come."
The Buddha's instruction clearly stated that "the matter is not yet resolved." However, Kasyapa, in a moment of hesitation, insisted that the Buddha himself did not know either.
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva was surprised to receive such a reply. However, as a Bodhisattva, he naturally had the magnanimity to accept defeat, so he conveyed the decree to Black Impermanence once again.
Black Impermanence, seeing that dawn was already breaking, wondered why such a small problem had to be delayed for so long.
Just as they were getting anxious, they saw the Bodhisattva's decree appear again in the notebook: "Even the Buddha does not know the answer to this question."
Black Impermanence felt as if he had been struck by Purple Heaven Divine Lightning a hundred times in a row; the time he was stunned on the spot was longer than all the years he had spent in the past.
Even Buddha didn't know; this answer was utterly earth-shattering. Compared to this, the rise and fall of any mortal dynasty seemed pale and boring.
Even Buddha has things he doesn't know. If this were to be revealed, it would likely shake the very foundation of Buddhism.
The Black Impermanence looked at Guan Bo with a mixture of admiration and dread. To be able to stump even the Buddha, this demon was destined for greatness. However, such figures were often accompanied by boundless suffering and calamities; it was best not to get too close.
Compared to this, gambling and fighting are utterly insignificant.
Thinking of this, Black Impermanence quickly cupped his hands and said to Guan Bo, "I can't answer. I've lost this round." In his nervousness, he forgot his stutter and spoke fluently.
Guan Bo smiled smugly, thinking, "As expected, this question stumped even Hei Wuchang. It was worth it to have thought about this before I transmigrated."
Guan Bo was unaware that this wasn't just a problem for Black Impermanence, but for all the gods and Buddhas of the heavens. Especially since Ananda, with his loose tongue, found out, the news had already reached the Heavenly Court in just a short while.
Countless immortals and Buddhas are asking this question: "When will Detective Conan end?"
The fact that even the Buddha could be asked about it must contain profound Zen wisdom and mystery. For a time, everyone was pondering it, hoping to gain some insight.
Guan Bo didn't care about any of that. He only said to the Black and White Impermanence, "Best of three, so I win this time. You two are too kind."
"We dare not accept such praise; we truly cannot answer this question," Black Impermanence laughed.
There was nothing embarrassing about admitting defeat. Even Buddha couldn't answer it, so it wouldn't be a loss of face for a mere underworld general to admit defeat. In fact, he felt honored to have been involved in the matter.
"In that case, is Nie Shuhuan's life saved?" Guan Bo asked Hei Wuchang.
"I will cross his name off the Book of Life and Death, ensuring that the underworld will not send any more ghost messengers to claim his life. However, whether he lives or dies depends on your abilities," Black Impermanence replied.
"What do you mean? Being removed from the Book of Life and Death means you don't have to die?" Guan Bo asked curiously, thinking that Black Impermanence was deliberately causing trouble.
"No, even those in Heaven are not on the Book of Life and Death. They too experience the five signs of decay and death. These ghost messengers are not here to kill, but to save lives." Black Impermanence revealed a fact that shocked Guan Bo.
