Chapter 6 Yingcao
The little girl's name was Yingcao. Children from poor families are often named after wildflowers and weeds, hoping that their fate will be stronger and that they will have a more resilient life force like these things.
Guan Bo carefully observed the slender yet spirited girl and realized she truly possessed a healing talent. Just looking into her large, quiet eyes was enough to evoke a sense of peace.
In other words, this girl is a natural-born cultivator, and the Bodhisattva would probably be very happy to see her.
Thinking of this, Guan Bo asked a few more questions: "Bringing the dead back to life is no ordinary request, do you understand?"
Everyone says that the Bodhisattva is compassionate and omnipotent.
Yingcao's face was innocent, and her reasoning was impeccable. Although she sensed something was amiss, Guan Bo was speechless.
In the end, Guan Bo let Yingcao climb onto his back and took the little girl up Luojia Mountain to meet Guanyin Bodhisattva directly.
Perhaps Guan Bo also wanted to see if the Bodhisattva was truly compassionate and merciful, and could save people from suffering.
After passing through the Purple Bamboo Forest and reaching the mountain peak, they did not see the Bodhisattva, but the Black Bear Spirit blocked their way.
"Second brother, what are you trying to do?" the black bear spirit asked, barely suppressing his anger.
“I took the little girl to pray to the Bodhisattva, what’s wrong with that?” Guan Bo said matter-of-factly.
“Bodhisattvas are not to be seen so easily,” the black bear spirit retorted, not giving an inch.
“Don’t monks help others and themselves?” Guan Bo retorted.
"It's better to accumulate good deeds to avert disaster than to appeal to gods and Buddhas. The Bodhisattva mentioned this yesterday when he was giving his sermon. You lazy bum, you didn't listen at all, did you?" The black bear spirit looked at him with a disappointed expression.
"Huh, is that so? Then why do so many people pray to gods and Buddhas?" Guan Bo asked curiously.
"People are foolish. They see Buddhists doing good deeds and think that their prayers will be answered. Look at all the temples in the world. Apart from the Great Thunder Temple, where are there any real immortals or Arhats presiding over them? It's just that mortals want to build temples, and it's not good to stop them."
"Wait, isn't there a Ji Gong Temple?"
Who is Ji Gong?
"The Arhat who subdues dragons! He's like a beggar all day long, carrying a tattered palm-leaf fan, drinking wine and eating dog meat. He says that wine and meat pass through the intestines, but the Buddha keeps them in his heart." Guan Bo tried to describe the legendary figure.
"If Jianglong heard you say that, he'd probably have to change his name to Jiangxiong!" The black bear spirit's face clearly said, "You're courting death."
During this round of conversation, Yingcao didn't understand a single word, but she understood that the Black Bear Spirit wanted to prevent her from seeing the Bodhisattva.
This little girl was truly daring. She quietly slid off Guan Bo's back, using his elephant-like physique as cover, and stealthily bypassed the black bear demon to run up the mountain.
But how could a mere mortal girl escape the black bear spirit's senses? She had barely taken a step when the black bear spirit caught her red-handed.
The black bear demon was ten feet tall, holding a small, kicking doll in its hand, as if a bloody scene was about to unfold at any moment.
Guan Bo felt a little sorry for the little girl, so he said to the black bear spirit, "Big Bear, don't do anything. I'll take this little girl back with me."
The black bear spirit casually tossed the Yingcao onto Guan Bo's back, the force just right, ensuring the little girl wasn't hurt in the slightest.
"Send it back quickly. I think you're about to get entangled in worldly karma. Since ancient times, this has been the greatest calamity for mountain spirits and monsters. I'm afraid even I, as your older brother, won't be able to save you then," the black bear spirit patiently admonished.
"Understood. I'll try my best to find a fairy to date as soon as possible, just like you, Xiong Da."
"You're asking for it!" The black bear demon glared and blew out a gust of demonic wind, directly sending Guan Bo and Yingcao to the foot of Luojia Mountain outside the Purple Bamboo Forest.
Yingcao settled down in the purple bamboo forest.
Yingcao, who has no parents, is now an orphan. If she is sent back, she will either be sold into prostitution or have her hands and feet broken and become a beggar.
The Purple Bamboo Forest was large, and there was no shortage of food and drink. Guan Bo was also happy to have such a young girl to chat with, which made life a little less difficult.
However, the next morning, after getting enough sleep, Yingcao went to Luojia Mountain again.
With Guan Bo's aura clinging to her, the ferocious beasts in the Purple Bamboo Forest dared not approach, allowing the young girl to pass through smoothly. However, upon reaching the mountain gate, she encountered the Black Bear Demon.
"Uncle Blackie, can I...?"
"No!" Before Yingcao could finish speaking, the black bear spirit blew her down the mountain again.
On the third day, Yingcao was smarter this time. Instead of heading straight for the mountain gate, she waited until she could no longer see the Black Bear Spirit before quickly running inside.
However, such a small trick couldn't fool a powerful demon like the Black Bear Spirit. This time, the demonic wind blew quite fiercely, causing Yingcao to tumble and fall several times in the bamboo forest. When she saw Guan Bo again, the little girl buried her head in his long fur and burst into tears.
"Why are you doing this to yourself? If the Bodhisattva wanted to see you, he would have let you go up the mountain long ago," Guan Bo advised Yingcao.
“But if I can’t see the Bodhisattva, Grandpa won’t come back to life,” Yingcao said, sniffling as she rubbed her aching head.
"People are always born, grow old, get sick, and die."
"But Bodhisattvas don't die, do they?"
"Bodhisattvas are not human beings."
"Xiong Er, you're asking for it!" A gust of demonic wind suddenly rose up, lifting Guan Bo up and spinning him around more than a dozen times until he saw stars.
After a while, Guan Bo shook his head and swayed as he stood up again.
"Damn it, this is unbearable! So what if you have clairaudience? Do you even know what personal privacy is? Do demons even have any rights these days?" Guan Bo cursed at the mountaintop, then explained to Yingcao, "Bodhisattvas are enlightened masters, so naturally they are immortal."
The patch was applied incredibly quickly; Guan Bo was afraid that even the Bodhisattva would hear it, and he wouldn't be as gentle as Xiong Da.
"Then I also want to attain enlightenment, I want to live forever, and then I want to bring Grandpa back." Yingcao instantly made a small adjustment to her life goals and set a small goal.
Why is this child so stubborn?
Yingcao is a bit stubborn; she runs up Luojia Mountain every day, determined to see the Bodhisattva and bring her grandfather back to life. However, this little girl is persistent and has already tried hundreds of different ways to infiltrate the mountain.
Unfortunately, mortals are mortals after all. Each time, they were caught by the black bear demon before they even reached halfway down the mountain and were thrown back down to the foot of the mountain.
Sometimes, when the Black Bear Spirit got annoyed, he would simply let Guan Bo take the person back himself.
Several times the Black Bear Spirit got angry and made Yingcao suffer a little, but it could not extinguish her determination to seek Buddha.
Guan Bo's magical skills actually improved greatly as a result. The reason was simple: he was heartbroken that the young girl Yingcao had fallen and injured herself on the mountain, so he diligently practiced healing magic. While he couldn't bring the dead back to life or heal wounds, curing bruises and scrapes was certainly within his capabilities.
Yingcao, who vowed to attain enlightenment, found it difficult to enter the immortal realm.
Guan Bo himself was only a half-baked demon, not even having completed his human form, so naturally he didn't know how to teach "humans" to cultivate.
Therefore, Yingcao could only diligently climb the mountain every day, stubbornly determined to see Guanyin Bodhisattva. This seven or eight-year-old girl had such great perseverance that even the Black Bear Spirit was somewhat moved and would never deliberately hurt her again.
However, the black bear spirit was quite impatient and would always grab Guan Bo and make him take Yingcao back.
I thought that life would just continue in this muddled way.
Until the morning of that day, Guan Bo discovered that Yingcao was missing.
It was truly gone. Guan Bo searched the entire Purple Bamboo Forest and turned Luojia Mountain upside down, finally finding only Yingcao's blood-stained single garment at the foot of the mountain.
The rough patch on top, with its centipede-like stitches, was still sewed up by Guan Bo with his clumsy hands for Yingcao.
Guan Bo discovered that the single garment not only contained Yingcao's blood but also a strong demonic aura.
This eerie, pungent aura was definitely not the smell of any of the wild beasts in the Purple Bamboo Forest.
"It smells like fish!" Guan Bo's heart tightened, and he suddenly thought of a very cruel monster in Journey to the West.
