Chapter 13 The Manipulated Younger Brother

Qi Yuan, born into wealth, grew up spoiled by her grandparents. According to conventional thinking, Qi Yuan would surely grow up to be a good-for-nothing who knows nothing about farming and is lazy.

In the end, Qi Yuan's father, Qi Jianguo, could no longer bear to see his parents spoiling Qi Yuan. Remembering the hardships he had experienced in his childhood, he persuaded Qi Yuan's mother, Feng Shuyi, by promising to hand over the family business to Qi Yuan in the future. This allowed Qi Yuan to completely leave his maternal grandparents and accept the concept of raising children in poverty from a young age, becoming a well-known impoverished student in the neighborhood.

From as far back as he could remember, Qi Yuan knew his family was dirt poor, unable to afford the toys, clothes, or shoes his classmates had. He was often mocked by his classmates for being a pauper, and that his whole family was poor. Qi Yuan couldn't argue back, nor did he dare to fight back, so he always swallowed his anger, his mind filled with thoughts of becoming successful and rich someday.

As he grew older, Qi Yuan realized something was wrong. Ever since watching "The Truman Show," Qi Yuan felt like he was Truman because his life was full of scenes from the textbook, and even his neighbors talked about things from the textbook.

Moreover, Qi Yuan gradually realized that he had been under surveillance all along. He questioned his existence and tried to break free from this constraint. Finally, when he patiently discovered the flaws, he found a way.

On the day of the college entrance examination, he successfully bypassed the surveillance and opened the door, only to find himself in a huge office with information about him and surveillance footage covering the walls. Even his grandfather, who had died young, was one of the main people controlling his life.

Qi Yuan's mentality collapsed. He couldn't believe that he had been living in a false world all along, becoming a guinea pig in his parents' eyes.

Even when his parents arrived, he couldn't vent his frustrations on them until he heard his father say, "You think we control your life, but you also control ours."

He was completely devastated. Why didn't they realize they were wrong? Why did they keep blaming him? Why should his parents choose his life? Was it just because they wanted a son they wanted to please? He just wanted to live authentically and be himself. Was that wrong?

No, he's not wrong. He wants to be the free wind, not controlled by anyone; he wants to try all possibilities, even if he encounters setbacks; he wants his life to be something he can choose, instead of following instructions step by step according to other people's expectations.

He wanted to be a living, breathing person, not a manipulated puppet, but what happened in the end? Because his parents said it was all for his own good, he had no choice but to forgive them, no choice but to wear a mask and continue to be the son they wanted, until he broke down and died.

He died, on the day he discovered the truth, on his way to Tsinghua and Peking Universities, and in every dream that was nipped in the bud. Yet even in death, he will still be talked about.

"That's so pretentious. If it were me, I would love to have such a smooth life arranged by my parents."

Even his parents complained that he was immature and ungrateful, but who knew how many hardships he had endured, how much abuse he had heard, and how much bullying he had suffered on his way up?

Yes, they have always arranged for people to protect him, but who says that school violence has to involve physical violence? Verbal violence is far more upsetting and makes him feel inferior than physical violence.

"I don't want to have an afterlife. I'm afraid I'll encounter parents like that again. If possible, please let them experience a life that's been manipulated. Thank you."

The boy in front of her was tall and thin. After he finished speaking, he bowed as if to pray for her, but before she could answer, his soul had already vanished without a trace of lingering affection.

“┭┮﹏┭┮, Boss, he’s so pitiful.” The panda wiped its tears and nestled in Prayer’s arms, crying as if it had suffered the same fate itself.

Qi Yuan patted the panda's little head, and when she looked up, she saw that the animals, who had been playing happily, had all stopped what they were doing and were looking in the direction where the boy had disappeared with tears in their eyes.

When Qi Yuan opened his eyes, he saw "30 days until the college entrance examination" written in large letters next to the blackboard. He didn't expect it to be this time. It seems that the original owner still didn't want them to have their wish. So, let's start from the college entrance examination.

Today is the day the results of the third mock exam are released. According to the original owner's memories, tonight while she is sleeping, everyone will gather in the office to cheer for her score of over 700.

Sure enough, Qi Yuan pretended to be asleep that night, and after a while, she heard a slight noise. She figured they must be eager to see the results.

The surveillance footage was adjusted to show her still asleep. Qi Yuan used the borrowed phone to call Qi Shuai.

"Hi?" As soon as the call connected, that nonchalant, carefree voice came through.

"Brother, I am Qiyuan."

After a long silence on the other end, a foreigner could be faintly heard asking who it was. After a while, Qi Shuai's voice came through.

"How did you know my phone number? You found out?" Qi Shuai was not a very thoughtful person, so when Qi Yuan introduced himself, Qi Shuai naturally assumed that Qi Yuan knew everything.

"Hmm, brother, do you still want Dad's approval?"

"What, what are you going to do?" Qi Shuai was dumbfounded. What kind of question was that? When did he need Qi Jianguo's approval?

"It's nothing. I feel like I've grown up and can have my own life now. What do you think, brother?" This was a double entendre, referring not only to himself but also to Qi Shuai, who had been abandoned early on.

In his previous life, Qi Shuai's ending was also unfortunate. In order to prove his worth, he desperately tried to prove himself, but ended up dying on the road to proving himself along with his best friend. Qi Jianguo, on the other hand, was full of prayers. When he heard the news of Qi Shuai's death, he only said that he was too old to understand, and he didn't even shed a single tear.

"Explain yourself clearly, what exactly do you want to do? I don't understand what you're saying." Qi Shuai felt like he was listening to gibberish. His younger brother said he was all grown up and could have his own life, so what was the point of talking to him? It wasn't him, Qi Shuai, who was controlling him; he should be saying that to Qi Jianguo.

Thinking about Qi Shuai's mind, Qi Yuan didn't beat around the bush and said directly, "Brother, do you want to see how Mom and Dad's lives are controlled?"

"Is this for real?" Qi Shuai's voice rose several decibels with excitement, his tone filled with joy and elation. Although Qi Shuai wasn't one to think things through, he knew that his younger brother, Qi Yuan, had a much harder life than him. He had seen Qi Yuan once when he was little; the skinny little boy was dragging a woven bag bigger than himself. He knew without a doubt how much abuse Qi Yuan would suffer if his classmates saw him.

Don't assume that children's words won't hurt. Children's words are the most direct and poignant. Young Qi Yuan has suffered countless cold stares and contempt. Qi Shuai believes that if he were in Qi Yuan's shoes, he would never have endured it until now. Qi Shuai sympathizes with Qi Yuan and wants to help but is powerless. All he can do is pray for Qi Yuan every day, hoping that he can grow up healthy, sprout wings, and escape that cage as soon as possible.

Qi Shuai listened to Qi Yuan's plan and nodded repeatedly. After realizing that his younger brother on the other end of the phone couldn't see him nodding, he quickly agreed and hung up the phone, still looking excited.

"Brother? Why are you so happy? Did Dad send you money again?"

"NONONO, it's even more interesting than that." Qi Shuai shook his index finger, looking inscrutable.

After making the call, Qi Yuan put away her phone and restored the surveillance footage. As for Qi Jianguo's company, she left it to the animals in the space to handle.

Qi Jianguo wanted to pretend to be poor, didn't he? Then let's grant his wish and make him really become poor.

In the past few days, Qi Yuan has rarely seen Qi Jianguo, and even Feng Shuyi has been wearing a long face every day, no longer her usual smiling appearance.

Three days before the college entrance examination, on my way to school, I passed a newsstand and saw the headline on the front page that the Qi Group had declared bankruptcy. When I arrived at school, I could still hear my classmates talking about it.

Where is this?

As expected, upon returning home, Qi Jianguo and Feng Shuyi appeared to be in mourning. The two greeted Qi Yuan with forced smiles. Qi Yuan looked them up and down and, sure enough, all the incongruous clothes and jewelry they wore had vanished.

"Luckily, I had the foresight to keep Qiyuan from knowing our family is wealthy. That way, he won't feel inferior. Now we're just waiting for Qiyuan to get into Tsinghua or Peking University. Our family will definitely make a comeback. When that happens, your husband will buy you all your jewelry and bags..."

At night, Qi Jianguo and Feng Shuyi no longer sneaked back to the villa to enjoy themselves; instead, they huddled in their small room whispering to each other.

The next day, Qi Yuan discovered that all the eyes that had been monitoring him had disappeared, and the neighbors had all gone on trips one after another. Only Qi Jianguo's family remained in the courtyard, which was extremely deserted.

Qi Shuai appeared on Qi Yuan's way to school. The two brothers looked at each other, Qi Shuai gave an OK sign, and drove away.

When I got home from school, the neighbors appeared in the courtyard again, but this time the people they were serving had changed.

Qi Jianguo and Feng Shuyi thought that the family had developed feelings for them over the years and that they couldn't bear to leave them. They were very grateful and had no idea that all of this was aimed at them.

On the day of the college entrance examination, Qi Jianguo and Feng Shuyi got up very early and walked to take Qiyuan to the examination site. Since they didn't have a luxury car and couldn't stand the scorching heat, they went home instead.

When they didn't receive Qiyuan by noon, the two finally became anxious. They first went home to look for her, but couldn't find her. However, they did find a letter she had left behind.

[Mom and Dad, by the time I read this letter, I will know everything you have prepared for me over the years. Thank you both for paving the way for my future. As your son, for your sake, I cannot bear to see you only enjoying yourselves. I hope you will both be admitted to Tsinghua or Peking University soon, and then we will meet again there. Your son, Qiwu.]

"Husband! This!" Feng Shuyi was still flustered when she saw the letter. What did her son mean by this? What did he mean by "see you again at Tsinghua and Peking University"? Did he expect them, people in their forties, to get into Tsinghua and Peking University?

Qi Jianguo's hands trembled uncontrollably. He wanted to rush out to find someone, but was stopped by his former subordinates.

"Mr. Qi, I am only doing this for your own good. You should focus on your studies."

"Excuse me! Is there..." The foreign teacher stepped in just in time, beginning a new round of education at Tsinghua and Peking Universities.

Qi Jianguo and Feng Shuyi were trapped in the courtyard and unable to go out. They were forced to study various subjects for the college entrance examination every day. Only if they achieved the required grades could they receive a reward, which was just to be allowed to go out and collect bottles. Even then, four people would be watching them at the same time to prevent them from escaping.

The surveillance cameras didn't cover the entire house, so Qi Shuai stopped trying to prove himself. He spent his days watching the footage and figuring out how to increase his father's workload, but he went easy on Feng Shuyi instead.

Less than two years later, Qi Jianguo went mad, smashed all the surveillance cameras, and tried to escape from this cage, but he was caught and brought back to continue his hard work at his desk.

Five years later, Qi Yuan won a world-class long-distance running gold medal and met with Qi Shuai before leaving.

Qi Shuai has completely changed his ways and is no longer the carefree person he used to be. He also rarely sits in front of the monitor for a whole day.

Now, Qi Shuai has found joy in life. He runs a library, where he watches people come and go during the day, and at night the library transforms into a quiet bar where he mixes drinks for guests and listens to their stories.

"Are you leaving?" Qi Shuai already knew that the person in front of him was not the little boy he had met many years ago. He had investigated whether someone had harmed his younger brother and wanted to take his place, but no matter how he investigated, he found nothing. He could only attribute everything to metaphysics, wondering if it was time travel or possession by a ghost.

Qi Yuan nodded, and seeing Qi Shuai's hesitant expression, she remained silent and just watched him quietly.

"How is my brother? Will he come back?" Qi Shuai hesitated for a long time before cautiously asking.

Praying shook her head and said, "Oh no, its soul has been scattered, it doesn't want to be human anymore, and it's not coming back."

Upon hearing this, Qi Shuai was speechless. Tears welled up in his eyes, but he could only watch helplessly as Qi Yuan left, unable to utter a single word.

What should be asked? What can be asked? Qi Shuai is not the only one suffering in the Qi family. Compared to Qi Yuan, Qi Shuai feels that his life is quite happy, at least he has freedom and authenticity.

Qi Shuai blamed Qi Jianguo for Qi Yuan's departure, and suddenly called a meeting to force Qi Jianguo to improve his grades by more than thirty points. After three years, Qi Jianguo's grades were still around 500 points. Qi Shuai no longer had the energy to torment Qi Jianguo, perhaps because he saw that Qi Jianguo was already gray-haired and wrinkled, or perhaps Qi Shuai simply let him go.

All of them were dismissed by Qi Shuai, and everyone left the courtyard, which was hard for Qi Jianguo and Feng Shuyi to accept.

At first, they were happy to finally be free. But as soon as they stepped outside and saw the unfamiliar streets and buildings, they felt as if hundreds of years had passed. They wanted to find Qi Shuai and Qi Yuan but couldn't find them. Apart from the basic monthly alimony in their account, the couple had no further contact with the two brothers.

The couple did not leave the courtyard and lived their lives in a routine manner every day. Qi Jianguo was still working on the math test that he could never get 110 on until his death.
