Red Dead Redemption: The Great Philanthropist of the West

Chapter 57 The First Encounter with Pinkerton

"Oh, Henry, it's so good to see you. This is the best meal I've had in weeks. But I have to go. I'm still being chased by the Pinkerton detectives. I just managed to shake off them temporarily. If I don't leave soon, they'll catch up with me, and then you'll be in trouble."

Thank you for your hospitality. I'll treat you to drinks next time and we can talk in more detail. See you later.

With that, Arthur put on his classic cowboy hat and prepared to mount his horse and leave.

But Henry grabbed him. "Don't rush, Arthur."

Arthur looked at Henry with suspicion. He didn't doubt that Henry would betray him. He was just puzzled by Henry's behavior in preventing him from leaving.

"Listen to me first, Arthur. You can rest here for the night. As long as you don't appear openly in front of Pinkerton, the Pinkerton detectives won't dare to break into my camp."

They're just a bunch of detectives who've lost their law enforcement powers, not the Pinkertons of seven years ago who could go toe-to-toe with the military. So just stay in the camp and don't show your face. I'll negotiate with them when they arrive, and I won't let them do anything to you.”

Henry patted Arthur on the shoulder to reassure him.

“Really, Henry? You know, we committed a huge crime in Blackwater, killing a lot of people. Pinkerton and his gang have been chasing us relentlessly for weeks. I don’t want to implicate my friend, Henry.”

Arthur only knew that Pinkerton was very powerful, had a large number of detectives, and often represented the government in arresting criminals, possessing significant law enforcement authority. He did not understand what the Anti-Pinkerton Act was.

"Don't worry, Arthur. Go back to the camp and rest for a while. I'll talk to you after I've dealt with Pinkerton who's been chasing us."

Seeing Henry's confident assurances, Arthur returned to the camp with some skepticism.

Sure enough, not long after, Pinkerton detectives arrived at the Hound Ranch. Seeing that the camp had clearly just experienced a fierce gunfight, Detective Ross, who was leading the team, appeared very cautious.

Not daring to get too close to the ranch, he asked Li Yi and Zhang Wei, who had been sent by Henry to keep watch, from a safe distance: "This is Detective Ross from Pinkerton. May I ask who you are?"

"This is the Allen family's temporary camp. We have eliminated the Odrisco gang's thugs stationed here. Outsiders are not welcome at the moment. You should leave." Li Yi understood Henry's meaning and, without any politeness, directly drove them away.

If it were Agent Milton, he might have been more polite. He sometimes went to Paul's for drinks, and Paul had talked to him about the two men. Regardless of Milton's true feelings, he was at least outwardly a decent person, a fairly upright and courteous individual. Agent Ross, on the other hand, was quite impulsive and "righteously opposed to evil" during this period, not letting anyone connected to crime escape justice. He would even stop at nothing to achieve his goals.

Ross was aware of Henry's influence and military power in Blackwater; Pinkerton also frequently cooperated on intelligence matters there. Although Li Yi had made it clear that they were not welcome, he still wanted to make one last attempt. He had already searched the surrounding area before coming, and the direction Arthur last disappeared in was this direction.

“We are hunting down a vicious criminal who is connected to the Blackwater heist. I would like to speak with Mr. Allen to see if he can provide us with any information about the criminal.”

“Without our boss even showing up, I can tell you that we haven’t seen any bandits here, nor are there any bandits who could pose a threat to us. Mr. Ross, please proceed, otherwise we’ll consider it an act of malicious intrusion.” Li Yi said, raising his gun along with Zhang Wei.

Seeing that Li Yi and his group were determined, Ross had no choice but to leave with his men. After searching the vicinity for another night without success, he led his men to catch up with Milton's large group.

When Arthur saw Ross, who had been clinging to him, leave helplessly as Henry had said, he gained a deeper understanding of Henry's strength and realized that Pinkerton was not as terrifying as he had imagined.

Seeing that Arthur had relaxed, Henry poured him a glass of brandy before asking, "So, Arthur, why are you here?"

Arthur took the brandy, took a big gulp, and then sighed, saying:

"Henry, you probably already know by now that Dutch and his gang were responsible for the Blackwater robbery. Hosea and I tried to dissuade him, but he wouldn't listen. When they robbed the ferry, an accident happened, and many people were killed. Because of the crisis, they couldn't take the money with them, so Dutch hid the huge sum of money."

After hastily returning to camp, he led his gang in escape. However, the pursuers were hot on their heels, and in the chaos, the gang's accumulated money was lost along the way. I was the one who returned alone to look for that money. But I searched along the route several times, and still couldn't find it.

"I even ran into the Pinkerton Detectives. They sent a team that's been chasing me, with most of them continuing their pursuit of Dutch and his crew. Meanwhile, I've been leading them in circles around Sean Hills to find the lost money, almost getting caught several times, and haven't had a chance to rest. If I hadn't met you, I would have just gone straight to the place I'd planned with Dutch and the others to meet them. I don't think I'll ever find the money." Arthur finished his drink in one gulp, his expression somewhat forlorn. The gang's path seemed to be drifting further and further away from its planned utopia.

Seeing the dejected Arthur, Henry poured him another glass and patted him on the shoulder. "Don't think too much about it. Finish this glass and go get some rest. We can talk about it tomorrow after you've rested."

.......

the next morning,

"Arthur, are you sure you want to leave alone? Actually, we're heading north too. You'll be much safer with us." In the morning, having regained his composure, Arthur was concerned about the gang's safety. He wanted to get back to the gang as soon as possible. Although he hadn't been with the gang before, he had been drawing away some of their enemies.

"I was too tired last night and forgot to ask how Henry and you ended up here," Arthur asked a little embarrassedly. Last night, he was so focused on gang matters that he forgot to ask how Henry had come all the way from Blackwater to such a remote place.

“We’re here for revenge. We found out that the second-in-command of the Odrisco gang killed Ellie’s daughter a few years ago. We recently located their hideout here, but the mastermind isn’t here. We heard they recently headed north, and we plan to continue our pursuit along the north. So perhaps you could come with us.”

Henry and Arthur gestured gently to the female members of the group, and Henry spoke softly to Arthur.

“Sorry, Henry, I want to get back to the gang as soon as possible. I’m worried they might be in danger. You know, we’ve lost a lot of men recently.” Arthur was unaware of the Calander brothers’ situation.

"Alright, then be careful on your journey, and remember you owe me a drink."

“No, Henry, I owe you a favor. Thank you for helping us so much and for giving us a heads-up, but we didn’t take advantage of it. Once we’re safe, I’ll come back to have a drink with you. And if you ever need anything, I’ll do everything I can to help you.” With that, Arthur mounted his Boadesia (thanks to Henry’s intervention, Arthur’s horse hadn’t died), waved to Henry, and quickly drove off.

Henry and his group headed towards Plowstone Village.
