Red Dead Redemption: The Great Philanthropist of the West
Chapter 38 After the War
After tying up the remaining dozen or so men, Henry ordered Ashley to lead a group to finish them off and check for any survivors. Arthur led Jenny and the others to loot the place, while Robert led a group to keep watch. Since joining Henry, they hadn't been short of money and looked down on the Skinners' gang's paltry sums.
Meanwhile, Jones was treating the wounds of the few people who had been accidentally injured. There were a few who had been shot in non-vital areas, and one who had stepped into a bear trap. That's right, it was the unlucky boy Lenny who had stepped into the bear trap. He was so worried about little Jenny that he was afraid she would get hurt, and as a result, he accidentally stepped into the trap that someone had set.
He was being bandaged by Dr. Jones, occasionally calling out a few words in hopes of getting some attention from Jenny. Normally, he might have succeeded, but unfortunately, Jenny was preoccupied with looting. She was running around frantically, turning over corpses, oblivious to the slovenly state of the Skinning Brothers' gang.
She remembered Henry saying that anything looted from enemies belonged to the individual, as long as it wasn't gang stockpiled supplies. Now she had over ten dollars in her stash, plus some loose jewelry. Adding the loot distribution fee and the $50 reward Henry gave her, she'd earned about $100 on this trip. Jenny happily calculated her gains, but the thought of handing half over to Dutch dampened her excitement. It was outrageous! The federal tax here was only 21%, but Dutch demanded 50%, and he kept saying he had no money.
While Jenny was lost in thought, the gang's supplies had been inventoried. There wasn't much of value—just half a box of loose jewelry and less than a thousand dollars in cash. A gang of over a hundred people was dirt poor; compared to Moffer, they were utterly pathetic. Henry mentally scorned the Skinflint Brothers.
Henry doesn't care about such a small amount of stuff anymore; let them distribute it as they see fit.
“Arthur, you did a great job this time. You guys are all awesome. Are you planning to come back to Blackwater Town with me to celebrate, or go straight back to the camp? Here, this is your reward for this mission. As for the money for the distribution of supplies, go and settle it with Robert. It should be around $100 each.” He handed Arthur $300.
Arthur was also very happy at this moment. He had easily earned two or three thousand dollars with everyone in just a day or two, and the best part was that they were doing good deeds, without having to worry about being hunted down like before. This felt great. Perhaps I should suggest to Dutch that we don't necessarily have to make money through robbery and murder. After all, as Henry said, the tide of the rule of law is spreading rapidly, and soon order will completely cover this western world, completely replacing chaos. Perhaps the story Henry told Arthur had a subtle effect, because Arthur also began to reconsider whether his previous actions were correct.
"No, Henry, my friend, we should be thanking you. This job was easy and the pay was excellent. Please let me know next time there's something like this. As for where to go back, I plan to go back to camp first and then come find you for a drink in a few days. I must say, your wine is really good. As for the others, I'll ask them later and let them decide for themselves."
"Alright, I'll go give them the payment first. Remember to come over for a drink later."
"Hey Mike, David, you two did a really good job just now." When Henry found the Carland brothers, David was lecturing Mike, seemingly saying that he had been too reckless.
"Here, this is your reward. Mike, you threw the bomb really well. Want to come to my pub for a drink later? It's on me, drink as much as you want. And you too, David. Maybe in a few days I'll reorganize a guard team, and you can come and give them some pointers on marksmanship and combat experience." Henry handed each of the brothers $300 and explained that Arthur had gone to distribute the supplies to them.
"Hey David, look, even Henry said I bombed it well. I told you I wasn't reckless, it was tactical skill. Besides, those trash didn't think they could hit me, and I had you and Henry protecting me." Hearing Henry's praise, Mike immediately found an excuse to quickly cover up the matter. Otherwise, his twin brother would nag him for a whole day.
Then he quickly shifted the topic to Henry: "Oh, of course, we just finished a big battle, so of course we have to have a good drink. We didn't even know you were a pub owner, Henry. I've decided to be your friend, don't you think, dear David?" Mike's skill in changing the subject was superb; it seemed he had been nagged by David quite a bit.
David was used to his brother's recklessness. He'd tried so hard to change his brother's impulsive nature, but with little success. He figured he'd just let him be and keep a closer eye on him in the future. Seeing him change the subject, and with Henry there, he decided not to argue with him.
"Henry, you and Mike go have a drink. Arthur and I are going back to camp to rest. But remember to keep an eye on him, make sure he doesn't get drunk and cause trouble. Of course, once your guard is assembled, let me know and I'll come over. It's a pleasure to have you as a friend."
“Okay, don’t worry, it’s fine on my turf.” After saying goodbye to the two brothers, Henry went on to visit John, Charles, and Havel. He gave them his payment and invited them to the tavern for drinks. However, they declined, only saying that they would definitely visit him next time they were in Blackwater.
John wanted to go back to Abigail and Jack, to prove himself. Although he often acted like he didn't care about Jack, it was just because he didn't know how to get along with him, and he wasn't sure if Jack was his child. After all, Abigail's life was so chaotic before they fell in love; she'd slept with more than half the gang members, and Jack's hair color was different from his. However, after more than a year of wandering away from the gang, some subtle changes had occurred in his heart; he had the idea of accepting her. But he was still a proud and clumsy person, unable to express himself, which led to him arguing with Abigail every day after returning to the gang.
Charles had no intention of returning to the camp. He was very interested in Flying Eagle's tribe and wanted to go with Flying Eagle to see them. Of course, Flying Eagle welcomed him.
As for Javier, he didn't want to go because he didn't know anyone there. His friendship with the Calander brothers was just so-so. He was very loyal to the gang and to Dutch, while the Calander brothers, relying on their strength, sometimes didn't take Dutch's words to heart.
When it was Jenny and Lenny's turn, Jenny expressed her strong desire to go to Henry's place. Lenny also wanted to go, but Arthur pulled him back, since Lenny was still injured.
Henry also gave Lenny $100 and said he would welcome him to visit once he recovered.
Henry thought Lenny was a pretty good guy; he was one of the few in the gang who loved reading, was thoughtful, and had emotional intelligence.
For example, there was a time when Lenny and Dutch were discussing Evelyn Miller (Dutch's favorite author).
Dutch believed that Evelyn Miller's books were written for "freedom seekers" like them from the lower classes, and were very insightful. Lenny, however, said that Evelyn Miller only wrote about what she imagined the lives of the lower classes to be; she had never personally experienced suffering, and was just a conman who used flowery language to describe pain and grab attention. Dutch, a devoted fan, was a little angry, but Lenny immediately added: "Someone like you, Dutch, doesn't need anyone's guidance; you are a leader yourself." Dutch was bewildered by this slap-and-toast approach, then laughed and told Arthur: "Remember not to argue with Lenny, he'll skin you alive." Arthur then casually replied that he was bad with words and wouldn't engage in such a discussion.
