Red Dead Redemption: The Great Philanthropist of the West
Chapter 37 Revenge (Part 2)
At 5:30 a.m., the sky was just beginning to lighten. The forest was filled with a white mist.
Henry and his group were traversing a dense forest, with Flying Eagle leading his tribe at the forefront.
In this environment, Native Americans were the best hunters. Armed with fine bows and arrows, they moved with the agility of monkeys, darting through the trees with ease. Their eyes were sharp as eagles, not missing a single rustle of grass. Their steps were as light as cats, moving silently through the forest, as if they were one with nature.
As they approached the Skinning Brothers' hideout, Flying Eagle and Li Yi exchanged a secret signal.
Henry gestured for everyone to be quiet and take cover. He then led Robert and Arthur to Li Yi's side, picked up his binoculars, and looked at the enemy stronghold not far away. He frowned slightly; the enemy was more numerous than expected, far beyond the 50 he had heard about. Judging from the enemies lying haphazardly in the camp, there were at least close to 100. He disliked surprises, but thankfully, he had made thorough preparations and brought reinforcements like Arthur.
"Li Yi, weren't you told there were only 50 people? How come there are so many more now?" Henry asked Li Yi in a low voice. They needed to know the situation before they could formulate an attack strategy.
"Boss, it's like this. Around one or two in the morning, another leader came and led a large group of people to join them. They even grabbed a few innocent passersby and grilled them for entertainment... I don't know if they got wind of our plan to wipe them out, or if it was just a coincidence. In the latter half of the night, their vigilance increased significantly. They deployed people to guard every direction, and they were in pairs, one in a tree and one under the tree."
"If I hadn't sensed something was wrong and quickly retreated from the perimeter, we might have been discovered." As he spoke, Li Yi pointed out four directions to Henry and Arthur, indicating that those were their outposts. Henry and his men observed carefully for a while before they could pinpoint the location of the sentry post. Sure enough, these were people who lived in the forest year-round; their camouflage skills were truly impressive. If someone had accidentally wandered in, they would have been in serious trouble.
After seeing that they had all found the sentry positions, Li Yi continued to explain to them:
“Currently, their camp is mainly divided into three parts. The two leaders and their close associates live in the dilapidated house in the very center. The tents around the house form the second circle, with about twenty or thirty people. The last defensive circle has the largest number of people and the widest distribution area, located between the sentry posts and the tents, scattered in various positions, some under trees, some in depressions, and some in trees. I also saw that they have set up some simple traps around the area, such as animal traps, snares, and small pits. However, there aren't many, just a few, scattered in a few locations. But it's possible that there are some that I haven't noticed, so everyone still needs to be careful. That's the general situation.” As he spoke, Li Yi pointed out the locations of the traps he had observed.
After observing for a while, Henry signaled for everyone to retreat to the main force's position. He drew a simple map and pointed in three directions, saying:
"Therefore, in order to wipe them out in one fell swoop and prevent them from scattering and escaping, I propose that we divide into three teams and attack them from these three directions respectively."
A team led by Arthur, along with his gang members, attacked from the northeast.
The second team, led by Robert, consisted of an armed squad and Native American warriors, and attacked from the northwest.
The third team, led by Ashley, along with the moonshine guards, bypassed the immediate outpost and attacked from the southwest.
I'll find a high vantage point with a good view and provide sniper support. Dr. Jones and I will go together to provide support as soon as we spot any wounded personnel.
We'll first use assassinations to eliminate their sentries, then advance step by step. If we're discovered, we'll just kill them outright. Everyone, let's storm in together. We don't need any survivors; capture the two leaders alive if possible, otherwise, forget it. Also, I have a batch of explosives here; distribute them and throw them at any groups of enemies you see.
Is there anything wrong with this arrangement?
Seeing that no one spoke, Henry continued, "OK, if no one has any objections, we will launch the attack at 6:30. Everyone, check your watches, then go to your assigned positions and attack on your own when the time comes."
After everyone had taken their assigned positions, Henry, along with Li Yi and Jones, found a good spot: a relatively flat, large rock with no trees obstructing their view, offering a wide field of vision and a clear view of the surrounding enemy stronghold.
Henry had Dr. Jones temporarily act as a lookout, while he took a Carcano sniper rifle from his backpack and gave it to Li Yi, asking him to act as a temporary sniper alongside him.
For the past few months, besides serving as Henry's personal bodyguard, Li Yi has also had Robert instruct him in firearms handling techniques in his spare time. In this era, martial arts alone are indeed insufficient. Fortunately, those who practice martial arts have excellent reaction and observation skills, and their hands are steady enough. They learn firearms much faster and master them more easily than the average person. In just over two months, Li Yi's rifle and sniper skills have almost caught up with Robert's. According to Robert, in another month or two, he might no longer be Li Yi's match in marksmanship.
After Henry and Li Yi had adjusted their positions, the morning mist gradually dissipated, and golden sunlight shone down.
As time passed, Henry noticed that the sentries were starting to disappear; it seemed that the three teams had begun their assassination plot.
Henry continued to observe with his sniper rifle when suddenly, gunshots rang out from the forest. The gunshots were like some kind of signal, spreading from one direction to all directions. It seemed that the enemy had discovered them, so there was no need to hide anymore; they should just go for it.
Henry carefully observed the southwest direction from which the gunfire had originated. He saw a moonshine guard with an arrow in his shoulder, now lying prone on the ground to reduce the enemy's visibility. However, he didn't notice that the person who shot him was hiding in a large tree next to him. As the enemy stealthily drew his bow again, Henry fired a deadly shot into the head, the body falling next to the moonshine guard, startling him. However, he quickly realized it was friendly reinforcements and relaxed, continuing his advance. Fortunately, the injury was to his left arm, which wouldn't significantly affect his combat ability.
Henry ignored him and continued searching for targets. Meanwhile, Li Yi was firing relentlessly, and enemies could be seen falling every now and then.
The encirclement quickly tightened to the second defensive perimeter (the tents), with occasional explosions in between. Henry noticed that Mike Calland was the one throwing the most explosives. For some reason, instead of using his near-sharp marksmanship, he had earned the title of "bomb maniac."
Once, in an attempt to throw even more perfectly, he even ran right up to the enemy before throwing. Henry almost suspected he was going to take the enemy down with him. He couldn't understand how such a strong, tall man could move with such graceful movements, preventing the enemy, less than ten meters away, from hitting him with an arrow. Instead, he exposed himself to Henry, who then called him out one by one.
Meanwhile, Elias Green and Otis Skinner, the two leaders of the Skinners gang, had already woken up. However, they also heard the occasional sound of sniper rifles outside and knew that there were snipers around. They dared not go out and could only shout loudly in the room to direct the others to resist the enemy.
These henchmen were no match for the overwhelming firepower and were quickly wiped out. Finally, after Mike seized an opportunity to throw a few more high explosives, the remaining men, including the two leaders, threw down their weapons and surrendered. Although they disregarded life, they disregarded the lives of others, not their own.
