Red Dead Redemption: The Great Philanthropist of the West
Chapter 29 Occupying the Thieves' Territory
Soon, it was one o'clock in the morning. Everyone changed into black clothes, covered their faces with black masks, and arrived near Guy Bay like ghosts.
After observing the thieves' territory for a while using binoculars, the group checked their watches and then, as planned, went to their designated hiding spots. Henry and Dr. Jones remained on nearby high ground to continue observing and waiting using their binoculars.
When the time came, Antora and Bounty Hunter A quietly crept to the vicinity of the outpost, while the others lay in ambush at the main gate, flanking the two guards.
Soon, after shooting down the dozing sentry, the group worked together to take care of the guards at the gate who were chatting and drinking. Then, in pairs, they went to their assigned positions to eliminate the enemies who were still asleep.
The process went surprisingly smoothly. They only alerted one bandit who woke up in the middle of the night to urinate, but before he could even warn them, he was instantly killed by a throwing knife. In the end, only a few conscious patrolmen remained, whom they couldn't kill silently, so they simply killed them outright. Without losing a single soldier.
However, this final wave alerted the people on board. When someone tried to set up a Maxim machine gun to aim, Jack Robert, the former cavalry captain, accurately headshot them from a distance. The remaining men were then easily knocked unconscious by Li Yi, who had already infiltrated the ship. This included a leader lying in the cabin, still not fully conscious.
After tying them all up and signaling that everyone was safe, Karl instructed the group to re-search every corner thoroughly. He also ordered them to finish off all the bandits to prevent any cliché situations where the wounded survived but then launched a sneak attack.
The group quickly finished their inspection and returned to report. However, there were a few trembling individuals among them who didn't look like gangsters.
“Karl, we found these three in a small house. They surrendered as soon as they saw us. They said they were brewers from the camp and were forced to come by the Howling Wolf Gang. I didn’t think they had the air of bandits, so I spared their lives and brought them here. What do you think we should do with them?” Ashley said, walking up to Karl.
"Blindfold them first, then take them a distance away and tie them up. We'll decide what to do when Henry comes over."
After the battle was over, Henry and Robert returned to the thieves' territory.
Henry was quite satisfied to see that no one was injured and that the other party had been dealt with swiftly and decisively.
Henry then had Robert and Carl tally the spoils of war, while he, Li Yi, and former Sheriff Smith went to the cabin to interrogate the leader of the Howling Wolf Gang, the thieves' stronghold, who was the one Li Yi had knocked unconscious and tied up in the cabin.
After a period of severe torture, the Howling Wolf Gang leader, named Vargin Arroyo (whom John later captures in New Austin during a bounty hunter mission), finally confessed to robbing Old Allen's wagon cargo. However, he swore that he had only taken the medicine and had not killed anyone. The murderer was someone else entirely.
He also provided another clue: after he robbed the place that day, he ran into Elias Green of the Skinflint gang nearby, and the two even exchanged a glance from a distance.
After questioning the other men on board who had participated in the robbery separately and confirming the information was correct, Henry signaled to Li Yi to deal with them all.
After Henry disembarked from the ship, Robert and Carl had already tallied up the spoils:
Cash: 13,000 US dollars
Small gold nuggets: a few (a small pile)
Equipment: A small cargo ship, a Maxim heavy machine gun, 29 repeating rifles, and 18 pistols.
A small pile of medicines, some old brewing equipment, and a few houses.
Henry took $5 and some of the guns, leaving the rest for the 14 men to distribute among themselves, with each person receiving approximately $600.
Everyone was happy that they easily made so much money and no one got hurt, and they also gained a better understanding of each other's abilities. It was a successful plan.
Tell Ashley and Carl to stay here and manage this bandit territory, and tell them to make sure to have people on guard, in case of retaliation from the Howling Wolf Gang.
Although in the game the Howling Wolf Gang is a group of cowards who bully the weak and fear the strong (in the Sharpshooter mission, when you encounter the Howling Wolf Gang leader, the legendary gunslinger Flaco, there are two dialogue options: if you choose to threaten them, they will cowardly run away without any consequences; if you choose to appease them, they will immediately attack you...), and their strongholds are managed separately by each group, they are just a bunch of scattered Mexican outlaws. Although they share the same gang name, apart from their leader, the others don't care about the lives of others.
But this is the real world, and who knows what might happen? It's always better to be careful, after all, your life is your own.
Henry was actually quite envious of the small cargo ship and the Maxim, but he knew that it was more suitable for them to stay here, as Karl and the others needed them more.
Finally, Henry told Carl that he would send someone to deliver a batch of brewing equipment in a couple of days, and also send someone to teach them how to brew. Then they could begin formal production. As for the brewers who had been imprisoned, Carl could decide what to do with them. If he trusted them, he could let them continue brewing after monitoring them properly; he wouldn't interfere.
Then Henry took Li Yi, Antora, Grant, and the armed squad back to the manor in Blackwater to rest. Although the battle was not intense, the constant tension was quite tiring. After drinking and eating some of the sumptuous food prepared by the ranch steward, everyone fell into a deep sleep.
When Henry woke up, it was already noon.
Henry gathered everyone together to ask their opinions on whether their families should move to the small ranch first, so that they would be able to stay with each other and look after one another when he went on a mission. Once the estate in Quaker Bay was completed, they would all move there together to live on the larger estate.
This is a good thing, and of course no one has any objections.
So those with families went back to prepare for moving.
Ellie and Grant, being unmarried, didn't need to prepare anything, so Henry asked them to escort the old butler William to Armadillo Town to buy the thieves' territory and the island in the middle of the lake from the local government. They were unaware that the Howling Wolf Gang of the thieves' territory had been wiped out, and that it should be easy to take it over for a small sum of money.
As for Li Yi and Antora, Henry didn't have them come along. Instead, he sent them to Saint Denis, to Chinatown, to recruit some skilled construction craftsmen. They needed to be good-natured, reliable, and capable. If they encountered any exceptional talent, they could be recruited as well. Salaries would be determined after they arrived; they wouldn't be treated unfairly. Oh, and avoid hiring those who had used opium or were drunk. If they didn't have any intelligence, they should ask Trelawney. They could also ask him for help with anything they couldn't handle; he was a capable man.
Before leaving, Henry called out to Li Yi: "Perhaps you could let the grandfather and grandson who helped you come and stay with us, if they're willing."
"Thank you, boss. I thank you on their behalf. Many of our fellow countrymen are having a very hard time over there."
