Red Dead Redemption: The Great Philanthropist of the West
Chapter 105 Dutch's Decision
"No, I'm pretty sure they're not following me... But does it matter? Since they've already found this area, how far are they from knowing our camp's location? They probably already know where we are. I think we should leave here as soon as possible."
Arthur voiced his opinion, but seeing only a slightly gloomy expression on Dutch's face without any other reaction, he continued:
“What they want is you. They want us to hand you over in exchange for everyone’s freedom.”
"That's a great idea, why don't you take it?"
Upon hearing this, Dutch reacted. He was no longer standing by the pillar as an outsider. Instead, he used his sharp eyes to scan the surroundings, observing everyone's reactions, before slowly walking to Arthur's side and replying to him with an ambiguous expression.
“You’re so funny, Dutch. So what are we going to do? Have you decided where we’re going to move to? I’ve already had Ms. Grimshaw and Mr. Pearson start taking inventory of our supplies.”
Arthur was somewhat displeased with Dutch's reaction, unsure of what he meant. Did Dutch think he was the kind of person who would betray him? He was becoming increasingly incomprehensible to Dutch.
"No, no, I don't think we should go anywhere. It's not the right time yet. We'll leave when the time is right. I already have a plan."
Now, all we need to do is do nothing. I remember Henry saying that Pinkerton and his gang have no law enforcement authority in New Hanover, so we don't need to worry about them coming to hunt us down. This explains why they approached you separately instead of coming directly to arrest me. They're just trying to scare you.”
“I think we can take this opportunity to go back to Blackwater Town and get the money. With the money, we can do whatever we want.”
At this point, Micah stepped forward, urging Dutch to quickly retrieve the huge sum of money left in Blackwater. He had been eyeing this money for a long time, and this was the nth time he had urged Dutch to retrieve it since the major robbery. Within the Van Cleef & Arpels, Micah's loyalty wasn't so much to Dutch as to the huge sum of money left behind in Blackwater.
After the Blackwater incident, he even secretly sneaked back to look for it several times. It must be said, Dutch's skill in hiding things and his control over people was truly remarkable. So much so that several years passed in his original world without anyone discovering his hidden money. Unfortunately for him, he encountered Henry.
"I've said it many times, Micah, we'll get that money back, it's just not the right time yet."
"Listen, everyone, listen to me. Things will get better. Our situation is turning around... We've survived so many hardships in the mountains, so this little difficulty is nothing."
Moreover, we still have a large sum of money in Blackwater Town, and we will be able to retrieve it soon. Then everyone can live the life they want. I have a plan, a great plan, and this plan is about to succeed.
Please...everyone...believe me, I can definitely lead you...out of here, and then to...a wonderful life.
Old Dutch's words were as infectious and captivating as ever, especially when he mentioned the huge sum of money. Everyone's eyes lit up. Although they had become somewhat immune to Dutch's plans, they couldn't resist the lure of money and their yearning for a better future.
Seeing that everyone had finally recovered from their slump, Dutch nodded in satisfaction, signaling them to relax and go back to their work.
Seeing this, Aunt Susan stepped forward, assigned tasks to the girls, and dispersed the crowd.
As for Micah's attempt to persuade Dutch to retrieve the money or tell him where it was hidden, he forcefully dismissed him. He was a bit obsessive, but he wasn't stupid; he wouldn't easily trust anyone, or rather, he trusted no one but himself.
Seeing that Datch was so determined, Arthur knew he couldn't change his mind and gave up trying to persuade him further. He then turned to John and Sean.
"So, what happened to you two? Weren't you saying everything was going smoothly? How did you both get injured?"
John was beginning to feel some resentment towards old Dutch, but he didn't want to express it. Sean, however, didn't have this concern and briefly recounted the entire train robbery.
Finally, he muttered a complaint about Dutch, saying that Dutch had changed and no longer promised not to abandon anyone, and that they had become increasingly unrestrained in killing people lately.
After listening, Arthur didn't say anything, but just patted their arms lightly, making Sean and John wince in pain and glare at him angrily.
"Perhaps you should remember this lesson. When the new world arrives, who would want to live this kind of life? We'll all be eliminated sooner or later. Think more about the future!"
Arthur's words stunned John and his companion. They had never imagined that Arthur, who loved gang life the most and had the deepest feelings for the gang, would say such a thing to them, and it seemed he even considered asking them to leave the gang. This made them fall into deep thought, and they forgot to retaliate against Arthur for hurting them.
Through his numerous collaborations with Henry, Arthur witnessed another way of life: gangs didn't necessarily have to resort to violence to survive. They could take on commissions, hunt animals, gather herbs, and even capture criminals for bounties. Or they could move to a state without bounties, buy land, and become ranchers; as long as they kept a low profile, they could live quite well. They didn't need to go to Tahiti or Australia.
Meanwhile, the three sisters, who had been sent to work by Susan, quietly gathered together again.
"Karen, Tilly, have you decided yet? Are you coming to Saint Denis with me?"
Mary Beth was a little resentful towards the two sisters. It had been agreed that, because Sean was trapped and Karen was worried about her, the two sisters would go to Saint Denis with her after Sean was rescued. However, at the celebration party that day, Karen got drunk and slept with Sean, making her reconsider whether to leave.
Tilly, on the other hand, was worried about her safety after leaving the gang. After all, the Forman Brothers, the gang she used to belong to, operated in Lemoine, and she had a grudge against them, fearing retaliation. She hadn't dealt with Henry much and wasn't very familiar with his character and influence, so she wasn't sure if he could protect them.
