A different Grand Theft Auto
Chapter 5, My Own "Power"
Back home, Franklin turned on his computer and, combining his memories with some information online, finally figured out the gangs around him.
First, let's explain the relationship between the Chamberlain gang in GTA 5 (the world Franklin lives in) and the Grove family in GTA San Andreas:
The gang's name is The Families, which is very similar to the Cripps gang in South Los Angeles in real life. This family has at least four branches.
The first is Chamberlain Gangster Families, often abbreviated as CGF in the game, which stands for Chamberlain Gang. The Chamberlain Gang, which Franklin and his friends frequently refer to as the Chamberlain Gang, is a branch of the family. The Chamberlain Gang is the most powerful gang within the family, and its territory is located in Chamberlain Hills Neighborhood. Sometimes, characters in the game will also refer to them as "the Hills" or "killer hills." They typically wear white, black, and green jackets with the family gang insignia, although some may wear green, black, and white shirts.
The second group, the Davis Neighborhood Families, often abbreviated as DNF, are at war with the Eastside Ballas. They are also known as Dity Davis Devils or Davis Devils. They can be found in parts of Forum Drive and Chamberlain's territory. Members typically wear white, grey, and black clothing, some with "Davis" written on them. If you get into a fight with one of them, they will yell "Davis Gang, bitch!" or "DNF G!"
The third is the infamous Grove Street Families, abbreviated as GSF in the game. The GSF, to which CJ, the protagonist of *San Andreas*, belongs, is the oldest underground criminal organization in Los Angeles. Although they engage in dangerous criminal activities, they at least have their own ethical boundaries compared to other groups (especially Mexican gangs). Despite his subordinates constantly urging their leader, Sweet Johnson (CJ's brother), to get involved in drug trafficking, believing it to be the new way to make high profits, he consistently opposes it. This sows the seeds for the GSF's later split and rapid decline. At the beginning of *GTA SA*, when CJ returns to Los Angeles, the GSF has been completely marginalized, its activities limited to a narrow strip of Golovin Street. Large areas of their territory have been seized, and key members have been killed in street violence and police raids. Even more devastatingly, the Barras drug dealers could now operate with impunity in the Golovin gang's stronghold, as their own members had become their loyal customers. This complete spiritual collapse rendered the GSF's last vestige of existence utterly meaningless. It was in this dire situation that CJ began by dismantling the foundations of the Barras drug network, gradually salvaging the situation and ultimately achieving his revenge, restoring his family to its former glory.
In GTA 5, the GSF's name is shortened to Families. This gang no longer exists at the time the game takes place. Lamar says in the game that "all the gang members eventually moved away from Grove Street, and most of them gave up gangster life, possibly becoming super-rich CEOs." Then, some time later, the Ballas seized control of Grove Street, which is why Grove Street in GTA 5 is Ballas territory. In the game, the GSF is considered the most legendary and famous branch. When Jimmy goes out for dinner, he asks Franklin if he's a member of the Grove Street gang, and whether Grove Street actually existed or is just a legend. Franklin replies that it's not a legend. This is probably a tribute to San Andreas, and the game uses this method to show players where CJ and his gang ultimately went. (Maybe you'll encounter CJ later!)
Ballas
In the storyline of *San Andreas*, the Barras Gang was the largest gang in Los Angeles (Los Santos, also known as Los Santos, and all subsequent references to Los Angeles refer to Los Santos). It originated during the Civil Rights Movement of the 70s, with its main members being African American men. Its initial territory was Glen Park (corresponding to MacArthur Park and Echo Park in Los Angeles), and its primary "business" was drug trafficking. The origins of the long-standing feud between the Barras Gang and the GSF Gang are never explicitly mentioned in the game. However, the intense gang war that erupted between the two in 1992 was the direct cause of the GSF's formation. As Barras corrupted the organization, the alliance between the underworld and legitimate society gradually eroded the GSF's influence. In suppressing its rivals, the Barras gang also emphasized developing cooperative relationships with other gangs. The Vagos and the Rifa of San Francisco, both South American gangs, provided them with ample supplies of drugs. They also obtained a stable supply of weapons from the Russian Mafia, making them virtually invincible in their turf wars. By 1992, their influence had extended to all major districts of Los Angeles, monopolizing the city's drug trade.
Despite losing significant territory to the Johnson brothers' rise to power, the Barras gang remains one of the "family's" traditional rivals in the GTA 5 storyline, where their territory is confined to southern Davis. Furthermore, they sponsor an NBA team—the Los Angeles Fears (corresponding to the Lakers).
Vagos
[Note: In the Chinese version of GTA 5, this gang is also translated as the Vigos Gang.]
The Vargas Clan is a Latino gang controlling northeastern Los Angeles and, at the start of the *GTA SA* storyline, the second most powerful force after the Baratheons. Because the GSF previously controlled major areas of Los Angeles, severely impacting the Vargas Clan's drug trade, they allied with the Baratheons to seize GSF territory. They are even more ruthless than the Baratheons, and before each major battle, they have their members collectively use drugs to increase their euphoria and pain tolerance. Although the Vargas Clan is outnumbered, they consistently manage to create local numerical superiority through meticulous planning before engagements, and their execution of ambushes, encirclements, and flanking maneuvers is highly effective. Organizationally, the Vargas Clan doesn't have separate "branches" like African American gangs, which contributes to their stronger cohesion and reduces the likelihood of internal strife.
Europa Aztecs (varrioslosaztecas)
In terms of both size and territory, the Euro Aztecs are the smallest gang in Los Angeles. Compared to the other three major powers, they are the most low-profile, avoid drugs, and while they are enemies of the Vargas State, they don't seem particularly interested in seizing territory. However, this secret society, acting as an "arms supplier," plays a crucial role in the expansion of various factions in Los Angeles. Although the smallest in number, each member is well-equipped; high-end weapons like UZIs, Tec-9s, and RPGs are standard equipment for the VLA.
In GTA 5, VLA also succumbs to the allure of drugs and becomes involved in cocaine smuggling. According to news reports in the game, they even engage in fierce gunfights with other drug gangs in the desert. VLA is also one of Trevor Phillips's main adversaries, one of the three protagonists in GTA 5.
Franklin realized he wasn't exactly a hero, and to survive in this world, having his own power was crucial. Currently, he was penniless and lacked manpower, so his immediate priority was to earn money, recruit people, and establish his own small force. Franklin believed that although the Grove Gang had disappeared, its key members were still around, and likely had gone straight. He could try to find them when the opportunity arose, and before that, he wanted to recreate the Grove Gang's former glory. Money wasn't a major concern as the main storyline progressed, so the next issue was talent. Franklin's first thought was Patty McCreely, who was also in the city and quite close. Judging from the game's storyline, finding him shouldn't be difficult. There was a blue-branded pharmacy near Franklin's house; he could try his luck there sometime. As for getting him to join him, that shouldn't be too hard. In the game, they didn't have transportation, so helping them escape the police was enough. But this was the real world; robberies without a car were unlikely. Their only problem was probably the police pursuit, and Franklin's job was to help them escape. Franklin remembered that he was lucky he had gone to the Armed Nation earlier and bought some ammunition. It was evening now, so he might as well try his luck. If he ran into them, great; he could try to recruit them. If not, he could buy some medicine. Although he was confident, bullets don't discriminate, and if he got hurt someday, he could take care of himself. With that thought, Franklin jumped out of bed, ready to go out, when he heard his aunt's voice.
Denise: "Franklin, you brat, all you do is fool around. Get out of here! My friends are coming soon, and I don't want them to see you!"
Franklin: "My menopausal aunt, this is my house, you can do whatever you want, just don't come into my room, I'm leaving!"
This auntie is really something else. Franklin wondered what it would be like if Old Cui and she got together, a wicked thought playing on his lips. He mounted his Dodge and headed straight for the pharmacy!
