Chapter 82 (Zhimiao) Little Rabbit, Be Good 4
The desert mornings still carried a chill. Daylight broke early, and in the distance, the sand met the sky, creating a wondrous display of light and color.
Elheisen emerged from his tent at the temporary camp and bumped into Seno. The two exchanged a brief greeting and began their respective preparations.
Once everything was ready, the group arrived at the entrance to the ruins. After speaking with the disciplinary officer guarding the entrance, they entered the ruins.
The interior of the ruins is somewhat dim upon first entering, and like most ruins in the desert, it is located underground. The walls of the ruins are made of dark yellow bricks, giving them an ancient and somewhat mysterious feel.
The ground was covered with accumulated sand and gravel, making walking difficult and causing some strain for the group. Following the path, they could see traces left by the previous group.
The group slowly made their way into the ruins. Elhesen noticed that the further they went, the more green plants appeared in the corners, indicating the presence of a water source. Perhaps other life existed deep within the ruins. Elhesen and Seno exchanged a glance; the two astute individuals had reached a consensus.
As they continued forward, more plants appeared, but strangely, there were only plants and no animals. There were virtually no dangers along the way, and according to those who had come before, they hadn't encountered any.
If there was anything amiss, it was the strange animal statues they had seen. However, they hadn't seen the enormous statue they were talking about despite their journey so far.
After walking for a while, some of the scholars in the group began to feel the strain. These historians, of course, weren't as physically strong as Elhesen; they were simply very knowledgeable.
When the procession stopped, the disciplinary officers found a relatively safe place for everyone to rest. Elhesen didn't rest; he walked to the wall and carefully examined the patterns on it.
The interior of this ruin is mostly well-preserved, and the further you go in, the more intact it becomes. Elhesen looked at the walls before him; the murals were somewhat blurred, but he could still make out their general outline.
Humans holding flowers kneel before the gods, who bestow light upon them. From that moment on, humans possess the qualities of beasts, becoming powerful and living longer.
Another scholar came over and, following the description on the wall, looked at the mural with Elhesen.
"It seems to be a place blessed by the gods. In the distant past, before the seven ruling gods appeared, there was a war between demons and gods. There were many demons and gods at that time. They were born to love people, but they all loved people in their own way."
Elheisen turned to listen to him; this was a rather elderly scholar. He was currently a teacher at the Order of the Church, having taught many outstanding scholars and was highly respected. Even Elheisen didn't know how he had come to participate in this expedition.
"Not all demon gods' love for their people can be easily accepted. We still don't know what this demon god's blessing is, but it should be related to beastification. We need to go further in to find out more."
The scholar's voice was calm and clear, carrying a gentle quality unique to elders. After listening to everything they said, Seno thought for a moment and then asked him, "Mr. Maine, your age really isn't suitable for further exploration."
"Haha, I know."
The elderly scholar smiled kindly, like a mischievous child. "You must be getting annoyed by all the messages I keep sending you."
"I know I'm too old for this, but I'm still worried. I also want to apologize to you all."
The elder sighed softly, his face etched with deep sorrow, drawing the attention of everyone around him.
"The approximate location of this site was initially calculated by me and a few old friends. My student only found out about it later. Emil is truly a wonderful child; he has the thirst for knowledge of a scholar and is not afraid of difficulties."
"But he shouldn't have brought people here."
The elderly scholar bent over to apologize to everyone, and was quickly helped up.
“I know some people have been affected by this ruin. The people in this group also have their relatives and friends. You all came for people you care about, and I should make up for my mistakes. Please allow me to do my part.”
Looking at the humble and remorseful elder, Elhesen lowered his eyes, thinking of Kavi. Elhesen paused for a moment before telling him, "Strictly speaking, this is not your fault."
"You are an excellent mentor. All exploration of the unknown is accompanied by danger, and everyone should be responsible for their own actions."
Seno glanced at Elhesen, said nothing, and simply took the remorseful scholar to rest for a while.
Elhesen remained standing before the wall, staring at the mural of the person who had been blessed and grown animalistic features. His gaze shifted to the figure's bloodshot eyes, and his expression darkened.
Seno stood beside Elhesen again and handed him a jug of water. Elhesen took the jug and thanked him.
"You keep saying everyone should be responsible for themselves, yet you've come here in such a panic this time." Sino's tone was calm, but his words were anything but.
Al-Hysen didn't speak at first, but after a moment of silence, he asked him, "Won't Tinari's contact with patients be affected?"
Seno's expression turned worried. "He told me that he is an orc by nature and that he was not greatly affected. He also said that he had taken precautions, but I am still worried." Seno's concern for Tinari was very straightforward.
"That's why the preparations were so quick this time. It seems you've been planning this adventure for a long time."
Elhesen glanced sideways at Seno. He had already begun preparing for the next steps. He was supposed to come to the ruins immediately if Kavi didn't recover, but by the time he found Seno, everything was already almost ready.
Seno and Elhesen exchanged a glance. They had never gotten along before, but there was a strange unspoken understanding between them. Although their relationship had improved a lot later, they still rarely spoke alone.
Sino shrugged, a slight smile on his face. "It's a good thing you came to me of your own accord, otherwise I would have had to come looking for you."
El-Heinz didn't respond to Seno's teasing; they both knew the truth. Those they cared about might already be affected, and they couldn't just stand by and do nothing.
Elheisen averted his gaze from the mural; the crimson eyes made him uneasy. The two walked towards where the others were resting, preparing their physical and mental strength so they could face the challenges ahead.
