Chapter 64 (Xiao Kong) Turning Around to Embrace the Sea 2
Looking at the white mark on his hand, Sora tried to wipe it off with some seawater, but he couldn't get it off no matter what he did. Helpless, Sora thought that since it didn't hurt, he would just go back and ask the captain and the others.
Thinking of the merman who had just left, Sora felt a pang of loss. She wondered if she would ever see him again, if he had a name, and if he had left to go home. Questions flooded Sora's mind, and finally, she shook her head to stop thinking about him. After all, in Sora's opinion, the chances of them meeting again were extremely slim.
Sora continued walking on the beach, searching for seashells she liked. While the sky was still bright, Sora remembered the captain's instructions, clutched the seashells she had found, picked up her backpack, and hurried back to where the ship was moored.
When Kong returned to where the ship was moored, he saw that the people on board had already skillfully set up a temporary camp around it. Before it was completely dark, a bright campfire was already burning in the camp.
This wasn't their first time on the island. Because of the unique and incredibly delicious fish found nearby, they would come to the island periodically to fish. This time, they were staying for a few days, and Kong had only been able to come to the island because of this hunting opportunity.
Upon seeing the captain and several sailors, they were delighted that Sora had returned so soon. They always thought of Sora as still a teenager, and even though there was nothing dangerous on this deserted island, getting lost at night would be a serious matter.
They had a barbecue on the beach with Sora, a novel experience for him. He was happy and even drank some alcohol with everyone. After dinner, Sora looked at the marks on his hands and thought of the merman again.
He was truly beautiful, and Sora couldn't forget him. Sora could still remember the mermaid's eyes, sparkling like jewels, yet even more beautiful. Perhaps it was because of the alcohol, but Sora suddenly felt a strong urge to see him.
Gazing at the distant sea flowing under the moonlight, he sat alone on the beach a little distance from the campfire, his fingers unconsciously beginning to trace something on the sand. When he realized it, he found he had drawn a rather unrefined fish tail.
Sora looked at his masterpiece, somewhat speechless. How could he have drawn something so ugly? Even if drawing on the beach was difficult, it wouldn't do. So, becoming serious, Sora found a suitable branch, squatted down on the sand, and began to write and draw earnestly.
Sora was focused on his drawing, and with a flick of his wrist, a somewhat rough portrait appeared on the beach. It was the image of the merman Sora had seen by the rocks; he was leaning against the rocks, his long hair flowing down his muscular chest, looking up at Sora. Sora remembered it clearly and drew it with great detail.
Looking at his drawing, Kong chuckled to himself. Finally, he drew a few seashells he had seen that day on the rock where the merman was leaning before leaving.
After Sora left, a wet figure crawled out of the sea. His green, damp hair shone brightly in the moonlight. He finally stopped where Sora had been painting and was somewhat surprised to find that Sora had painted himself.
He wanted to reach out and touch it, but the touch of his fingertips disturbed a corner of the painting, so he quickly withdrew his fingers. Then he quietly looked at the painting, his expression serene, like a statue under the moonlight. Seeing the seashell painted on the rocks, he smiled, a smile as gentle as melting snow, a smile that evoked the warmth of spring. Then he returned to the sea. Only the silent waves and the silvery expanse remained.
As night deepened, Kong's sleep was restless. In his dreams, he could always hear strange sounds, like the whispers of some creature, like the collision of the sea and the land, like the empty whispers from the depths of his soul.
Sora didn't sleep well all night, and only woke up in the early morning. Sora sat up, clutching his head with a slight headache. After a while, he got up and went outside, glanced at the boundless sea, and felt much clearer-headed.
Looking at the beautiful weather outside, Kong packed her things, preparing to go back to the place from yesterday. Perhaps she could run into that merman again.
The journey back to that place took even less time. The vegetation along the way was still lush, and the small animals still lingered near Sora. However, whenever Sora approached them with his hand bearing the white mark, the animals would flee in panic.
Sora realized that the mark on the back of his hand probably had an unusual function, otherwise these animals wouldn't be so afraid. Sora's determination to find the merman grew stronger, not just to see him again, but also to resolve the problem on the back of his hand.
Finally arriving at the familiar beach, Sora looked around with some disappointment, but the figure he was hoping for was nowhere to be seen. After waiting for a while without success, Sora could only sit on the sand, take out his easel, and start painting the sea.
Just as Kong was engrossed in his painting, his gaze suddenly fell upon an unusual figure hiding behind a reef, secretly watching him. Kong's lips curled into a smile; his eyes had just met those of the merman, and they had both noticed each other.
However, Sora didn't rush over; he continued drawing. A little while later, Sora could see the merman gradually approaching him. Sora continued with his work, his eyes crinkling with undisguised joy.
This situation reminded Sora of the kitten he had fed by the roadside before. That gray kitten was just like that, extremely wary and unwilling to let anyone get close. Sora had to squat there several times before the situation eased a little. The kitten would only approach him step by step after confirming that Sora was not a threat when he was holding food. It would eat its food carefully, but still wouldn't accept Sora's petting.
This merman is now just like the little cat from before. He gradually approaches Kong, except that this merman prefers to be close to Kong more than the little gray cat. After the merman noticed that Kong wasn't making any big moves, he sat down beside him and watched him draw.
Sora finished his painting, which depicted a vast ocean, with the merman watching from his side. When he was done, Sora turned to the merman and cautiously asked, "Hello, do you like my painting?"
The merman didn't answer at first, but after a few seconds of silence, Sora saw the merman nod. It seemed they could communicate, so Sora pressed on.
"My name is Kong. What's your name?"
Sora's face was fixed intently on the merman before him. Sora heard his reply, which was a little hesitant but clear: "...Little...Xiao..."
