Chapter 47 (Empty) Ode to the Wind 3
In the following days, the skirmishers remained calm.
Sora would occasionally approach Sanbing, trying to make up for everything they had lost. However, each time Sora came, there was no progress. Sanbing either ignored his every move or mocked him when he tried to show concern. This greatly surprised Sora, as the former Kabuto would never swear, while the current Sanbing was sharp-tongued and constantly sarcastic.
Sora felt an even greater pity for him. In his eyes, the puppet now was not much different from before. He was still gentle; Sora had seen it before. In those battles, the skirmisher would always silently hold off the monsters, trying his best to protect his men. Although he spoke harshly, he was intentionally or unintentionally protecting them. Now, the puppet was like a hedgehog, hiding his soft inner self, shrinking back, leaving only a body full of sharp quills, hurting anyone who tried to get close to him.
After being rebuffed several times, Kong realized that the skirmisher genuinely didn't want to see him, and wisely refrained from approaching him. Instead, he quietly and carefully observed Kong's wounds from the shadows.
After a few peaceful days, the stragglers still managed to escape when no one was looking.
The stragglers didn't dwell on Kong any longer; they returned to the rendezvous point set up by the Fools. The rendezvous person was shocked to see the stragglers, as he had been missing in the Abyss for several days, most of his companions were dead, and the few lucky survivors had no idea where he had gone.
Upon seeing the scattered soldiers return safely, he quickly relayed the news of finding the executor back to Zhidong.
The skirmisher didn't say anything, only asked about recent news, then packed his things and returned to Winter. As if by fate, after returning for the meeting, the skirmisher's mission was still to explore the Abyss. However, in the subsequent explorations, the skirmisher didn't encounter Void, only occasionally finding food and medicine around corners.
There were even some foods he used to like, but none of that mattered anymore. The skirmishers had destroyed those things, and he no longer needed that guy's sympathy.
After the Scatterers left, Kong investigated the past events. The Abyss's intelligence was vast and deep. He knew almost everything that had happened to the puppet. He was grief-stricken and incredulous. After that, he dared not see the Scatterers again.
He had many thoughts, wanting to tell the Fools that the Fools were not good people, that they had deceived him. He knew that continuing down this path would lead to nothing good. But when they met, the Fools' indifferent attitude told him that no matter what he said, the puppets who once belonged to him would no longer believe him.
Sora was even more worried. If he found out that the Fools were also deceiving him, would the Scatter Soldiers do something even more irreversible? So Sora remained silent. He could only send his men to carefully watch over the Scatter Soldiers. He hoped that the Scatter Soldiers would not suffer any more harm. Sora felt very sad, but this was the only thing he could do now.
What followed happened quickly, with the skirmisher's tasks becoming increasingly numerous and complex. The Fatui, upholding the ideals of the Winter Queen, sought to extract the hearts of the gods. Having joined the Fatui, the skirmisher naturally obeyed the Ice God's commands. He left the Abyss to undertake new missions, constantly handling various affairs and cleaning up the aftermath. From Mondstadt to Liyue, the Fatui had caused quite a stir. Even within the Abyss, they had learned a great deal through its intelligence network.
Finally, when the scattered soldiers obtained the Heart of the Thunder God in Inazuma, he defected.
The soldier knew, of course, that a group of people had been observing him from the shadows, and he could guess that they were sent by Kong. After all, they had spent a long time together, and even though time had passed and things were different now, he could still recognize some of the details.
So, when the skirmishers deserted, he carefully made sure no one could find him. Except for his partner—the Executor of the Fools, Dr. Foolish. In working with this madman, the skirmisher decided to abandon everything to fulfill the original meaning that had given him his birth.
To become a god.
Upon arriving in Sumeru, the Scattered Soldiers, in cooperation with the Doctor, began their experiments. The Sage of Sumeru was incredibly foolish, attempting to control the gods through human form. After imprisoning the newly born Grass God, he even tried to create new gods. However, his folly conveniently provided opportunities for the Scattered Soldiers and the Doctor, and their plans were quickly implemented in Sumeru.
Everything went smoothly. Most, if not all, of the Sumeru people didn't discover the problem with the terminal, and even if a few did, it wouldn't affect his plans. They were nothing but ants, insignificant in his eyes, and he wouldn't care about them.
The process of becoming a god is very painful.
The experience had been unpleasant for a long time. Although the soldier had become accustomed to pain, he still felt a piercing pain when the cold pipe was inserted into his back. This pain reminded him of the furnace in the sandstorm—a damned memory, the soldier cursed inwardly, while controlling himself not to struggle due to the pain and cause the experiment to fail. The soldier endured it; he succeeded.
Next, all the experiments proceeded rapidly. He eventually entered the mech, like a precious treasure placed in an exquisite box. The skirmisher's body was contained within, but his spirit was freer.
After gaining control of the demigod's power, the stragglers felt the immense strength within them and became even more convinced that everything they had done was right. Their emotions grew increasingly detached during this process; they could clearly sense the fading of memories and the disappearance of feelings.
At this moment, he thought of Kong again, and of all the beautiful memories they once shared. As time ticked by, his memories faded to black and white, and his emotions gradually eroded. The soldier wondered if he would regret it. In the end, he could only tell himself that it was all the right thing to do.
The moment he became a demigod, he told himself: "There is no need for fear. The pain is only momentary. I will end all evil, and everything will be a fresh beginning."
The doctor was thrilled to see the demigod-like soldier, saying he was close to godhood. All that remained was the loading of the canned knowledge, and he would become a true god. He should have done it long ago, abandoning those useless emotions to achieve greatness.
The experiment had entered its final stage, and the stragglers were remarkably calm. They even had the leisure to glance at Sumeru, sensing the connection with the believer's consciousness. This should be his first believer, but unfortunately, he was a weakling. Even after peeking into his past memories, he couldn't bear it and suffered a loss of reason, even falling into a coma.
However, he soon found a new source of amusement—that guy's sister, a traveler with a strong sense of justice.
