Chapter 45 (Empty) Ode to the Wind 1

Note: I'm not sure what the pairing should be called, but it's basically Abyss Sky x Wanderer (from different periods).

Please avoid if you don't like it!

In the dim abyss, sunlight is nowhere to be found.

The Abyss Prince, waking on his bed, raised his hand to shield his eyes. Kong rarely dreamed, but just now, he had one. In the dream, he remembered again the figure that had danced gracefully beneath the maple tree.

At that time, Sora had not yet entered the Abyss. As a traveler from the sea of stars, he was brave and gentle, possessing curiosity and patience towards all things in the world. A chance encounter led him to meet a beautiful doll living in the Borrowed View Mansion. At the doll's request, Sora brought her out of there, and then they were separated due to a battle.

At that time, Inazuma was in a state of chaos, with various ronin and samurai engaging in robbery and murder. When they met again, Sora rescued a doll who had been stopped from being robbed and seemed somewhat bewildered. Hearing the doll's stammering thanks and looking at his fair face, Sora suddenly felt a strong attraction to him. If someone told Sora it was love at first sight, he would definitely answer yes.

Yes, it was probably love at first sight. He was truly beautiful. Untouched by worldly concerns, as pure and innocent as a child. A white veil covered his head, his long, dark hair peeking out from within, making him resemble a jasmine bud, fragrant and pure. From the first time I saw him at the Borrowed Scenery Pavilion, I knew I had to protect him, I wanted to keep him.

Driven by his intense inner desires, he easily drew near to the innocent little doll.

He is now called the Kabuki-zhe. People admire his beauty, but they don't understand what he truly desires. The innocent and exquisite doll lives a life of wandering and hardship in the human world.

Sora would bring him fluttering Thunder Crystal Butterflies, guiding him to gently trace the magical patterns on their wings with his fingers. He would teach him how to wield a sword, guiding him with powerful wrist movements. He would bring him vibrant, blooming flowers, making him bend down to smell their delicate fragrance… In their lives, these small joys allowed the little doll to experience human feelings, as if he were already a human being. Or rather, in Sora's eyes, he was already a human being.

However, most of the time, Sora would tell him many stories, from the snow-capped mountains of Dragon's Back to the rolling grasslands, from the vast starry sky to the towering abyss of layered rocks… Every landscape was different, and every story was full of ups and downs. As they spent time together, the Kabutoshi learned about various emotions; he felt sadness for lovers separated in the stories, felt discouraged for a boy who failed despite his best efforts, and felt warmth from the love an elderly person had for their child…

The little doll would meticulously tidy up everything in their dwelling, prepare food for Kong, and obediently await his return. At that time, their temporary shelter was like a home, a warm and cherished little home. The wandering traveler and the ignorant, bewildered doll formed such a home.

Kong had promised Qingqi that he would take him to see all the sights in the world in the future.

The puppet shared this expectation; he trusted the person who had made the promise to him.

In front of their temporary shelter stood a tall, lush maple tree. Its branches overlapped layer upon layer, and its leaves grew extremely dense. When the wind blew, brightly colored leaves would always fall. They would flutter and dance in the air, then twirl like butterflies before finally settling down. Over time, a layer of red would accumulate on the ground, and walking on it would produce a creaking sound.

The happy little doll picked up a paper fan and danced gracefully under the maple tree. Her movements were elegant, her long hair swaying gently, accompanied by falling maple leaves—it was beautiful. At that moment, Sora sat by the door, thinking, "How wonderful, if only time could stand still at that moment." The dancing lover, the warm home—these formed the most beautiful part of her memory.

If only time could stand still at that moment.

The prince of the abyss thought to himself, a glint of tears welling in his eyes as he shed a single tear. Then, the tear fell onto the cold floor of the palace and shattered. Opening his calm eyes, he was once again the cold and ruthless prince.

The prince of the abyss must continue his mission. In this abyss filled only with pain and wailing, all he can do is exert all his strength to complete the plan.

Kong had never imagined that Kanria's destruction would come so swiftly. The judgment of Heaven, the punishment of the gods, caused this once-prosperous nation to wither away like a flower deprived of nourishment. The country was destroyed, and its people met no better end; curses clung to their bodies, they suffered, they wailed. Kong was powerless; he could neither save the country nor save them. All Kong could do was become the prince of the abyss, suppressing all his tears and hatred, awaiting the arrival of revenge.

For the sake of his people, and for the sake of hatred, Sora buried the pure white jasmine flower in his heart deep within his memory. He dared not search for the doll's trace, fearing he would abandon everything to keep the promise they made. He also felt guilty towards the doll, and Sora was even more afraid that those eyes would return to him with cold indifference.

Many years later, in the void where he was floating in the abyss, he met that doll again.

The doll was tattered and mangled. Its long hair had turned short, and its body was covered in wounds. Its fair arms and legs were covered in horrific scars, and even its cheeks and neck bore shocking wounds. Its once bright and clear eyes were now filled with cold indifference and disdain.

Sora lurked in the shadows, watching his puppet relentlessly battle the monsters of the abyss. The puppet's companions seemed inadequate; the monsters alone scattered them in twos and threes, many wounded and dead, their mangled limbs strewn everywhere. The survivors wailed, wept, and begged for mercy. Sora showed no interest in them; such things were common in the abyss. But Sora cared for his lover.

Sora discovered that his exquisite puppet had become even more powerful. Even with some injuries, it was still able to drive back the demons. However, its reckless fighting style made Sora frown, and several times he almost couldn't resist rushing forward to protect it, but in the end he just clenched his fist tightly.

The puppet's attacks were incredibly fierce, yet its defense was utterly nonexistent, as if it were completely oblivious to pain. It slew many monsters, the carcasses of wolves piling up around it, and its wounds multiplying. Its body was covered in red—the blood of its companions, the blood of monsters, and its own.

But Sora clearly remembered that the doll he once knew was afraid of pain. When he put down the firewood he had brought back, the doll would come to him, his eyes red, and show him the wounds on his hands. They were just small, sharp twigs that had accidentally scratched him, but Sora would still hold his hands in her own with great tenderness and gently comfort him.

Sora had always doted on this little doll. Sora had told Kabukija not to hide his wounds from him, nor to keep them from him. The little doll was very obedient and told him everything. But now, everything was different.

Coming to his senses, Kong turned his head and saw a monster's sharp claws reaching towards the doll. Seemingly unable to avoid it, the doll gave up struggling and closed its eyes.

Sora lunged forward and slew the monster, then embraced the exhausted little doll. The weary doll couldn't speak, only staring intently at Sora. Its lips moved as if trying to say something, then it fainted.
