Chapter 38 (Knowing the Subtle) The Bird's Poem 4
Elhesen's heart suddenly began to pound. This was the first time in his life he had felt this emotion. Like the first gentle breeze of spring after a long winter, it felt somewhat unfamiliar, but very comforting.
Al-Hysen closed his eyes, feeling the gentle kiss.
When I opened my eyes again, I saw Kavi hurriedly leaving. He was probably too shy, because even his flapping of wings was a little uncoordinated. Elhesen's expression was gentle, and his emerald eyes shone like stars in the night sky.
After that kiss, their relationship became more ambiguous and hard to define.
Kavi goes out every day and brings back all sorts of things.
He would give things to Al-Hysen. Sometimes it was a beautiful grass butterfly, sometimes a mottled leaf. Or he would bring back his strange friends, like a fox or a rainbow lorikeet.
They even brought home a wind slime once, which was also timid. Upon seeing Elheisen, it instantly went berserk, creating a gust of wind that turned the house into a mess. Elheisen eventually managed to subdue it and throw it outside.
After that incident, Kavi spent a long time helping with the cleanup, and his wings ached from flying so much. In the end, he lay in Elhesen's hands and let him massage his wings, complaining to Elhesen that next time he wouldn't bring back wind slimes, but fungus beasts instead.
Elheisen was speechless after hearing this and immediately forbade Kavi from bringing any more elemental creatures back—slimes and fungus were both prohibited. Otherwise, Kavi wouldn't be allowed into the house.
Kavi nodded obediently, but in his heart he was thinking that next time he would definitely show Elhesen how well-behaved the slime was. Elhesen knew Kavi well; he could tell from his expression that Kavi wasn't listening and might cause some more trouble.
The days passed by noisily, and Kavi often went out to play. Sometimes he would come back very early, and sometimes he would come back very late. But he always came home.
That day, Kavi returned home very late. He practically flew home trembling, and as soon as he got home, he crashed to the ground and couldn't fly anymore.
The carefully tended wings bore many wounds, some still oozing blood. The left arm hung limply, the hair was disheveled, and the face was filthy.
Only upon seeing Elhesen did Kavi close his eyes in relief and fall into a deep sleep. Elhesen, however, panicked and carried the unconscious Kavi to his most trusted doctor.
Kavi was badly injured, covered in wounds. The doctor reassured Elhesen not to worry too much, but Elhesen couldn't calm down. Just thinking about Kavi weakly closing his eyes in front of him filled Elhesen with heartbreaking pain.
Elheisen stayed by Kavi's side for a long time, day and night without sleep. The doctor, while caring for Kavi, was also worried about Elheisen, and ultimately had no choice but to give up trying to persuade Elheisen. As a friend, all he could do was cure the patient and help the little man wake up quickly.
Thanks to the doctor's excellent skills and Elhesen's meticulous care, Kavi quickly woke up. Elhesen was the first to notice that Kavi had opened his eyes. He gently rubbed Kavi's still pale cheek with his thumb, and Kavi nestled affectionately against his hand.
Feeling the warmth in his hands, Elhesen's heart, which had been hanging in suspense, finally settled down, and the atmosphere around him eased. The doctor, standing beside him, also finally felt relieved.
Then, Al-Hysen carefully fed Kavi some water and asked him, "What happened? How did you get like this?"
Kavi came to his senses. "When I went out that day, one of my men and a few others grabbed me. They had a lot of tools, and I was caught by them. Although I managed to escape, I was still injured."
After speaking, Kavi, with red eyes, rubbed his fingers against Elhesen's, his tone somewhat dejected, "I'm sorry, I've caused you trouble again."
Al-Hysen comforted Kavi, "It's not your fault. You just need to recover." He gently stroked Kavi's head. In his mind, he was constantly planning to find those guys and make them pay.
Elhesen acted quickly, finding out who it was before Kavi had fully recovered.
Minaka, a guy who's recently risen to fame in the bio-theory school. He's published many famous papers, but upon closer examination, it's nothing more than exploiting his students and stealing others' work as decoration on his own glorious crown.
This hypocrite has also been studying birds lately, and for some reason, he's been secretly and frantically searching for a strange bird these past few days. He's been offering quite a reward, both openly and secretly.
When Elhesen saw these messages, his eyes grew even colder. He secretly found some evidence, and together with the students whose work had been stolen, Elhesen approached the disciplinary officer.
When the disciplinary officer arrested him, Minaka was still incredulously trying to justify himself. He refused to believe that he was completely ruined; he was even more resentful. He had just discovered a magical winged creature, finally managed to catch it, but it had still managed to escape.
He was so close, so close to fulfilling his dream. It shouldn't be like this; he should be a genius, the most outstanding scholar. In his moment of mental collapse, Minaka saw the eyes of those around him—cold, disgusted, pitying.
Damn it, these people know nothing. They… Suddenly, Minaka saw Elhesen standing to the side, holding a blood-stained crimson feather in his hand. In an instant, Minaka understood something.
His expression was somewhat manic, and he actually broke through the disciplinary officer's grasp in an instant, rushing to Al-Hysen's side.
"You've found him! Give him to me! Give him to me!"
Al-Hysen looked at the crazed man before him, his face remaining expressionless, merely stroking the feathers on his hand. Then he turned to him and said, "What you can't have, he is mine."
Minaka was stunned for a few seconds after hearing this, then became even more frantic. Those around them, out of fear, kept their distance and couldn't hear their conversation. They assumed Minaka was trying to take someone down with her even in her dying moments.
The disciplinary officer who rushed over only apologized to Elhesen, while Minaka continued to struggle frantically.
"You think you've got him? I couldn't even chain him up; he broke his own arm and ran away. I can't have him, and neither can you. He'll definitely leave, hahahahaha."
Several disciplinary officers ignored the ravings of a madman; they grabbed Minaka and forcibly took him away. Only Alheisen remained, still pondering his words—had he broken his own arm?
There was something unsettling in Elhesen's eyes.
