Chapter 27 (Knowing the Subtle) My Beloved (Part 1)
Al-Hysen still remembers the feelings he had when he invited Kavi to his home.
In his youth, Elhesen had once seen Kavi. The blond senior shone brightly in the sunlight, his eyes brimming with unrestrained joy. In his interactions with others, his eyes, as red as pomegranate seeds, sparkled with a vibrant energy. It was as if he saw him standing there, those eyes shining upon him like a stream of light. Like stars in the night sky, they brought light to his otherwise calm and uneventful life.
Perhaps it was the dazzling sunlight that day, or the gentle breeze. Or perhaps it was the way he smiled that truly captivated him. In any case, Elhesen remembered that senior, as radiant as the sun.
Then, thanks to his intelligence, Alheisen quickly became good friends with senior student Kavi. They studied academic subjects together, from ancient scripts to the details of mechanisms. Because both were outstanding geniuses, they quickly came to understand each other, but with more and more contact came many conflicts, which accumulated to a peak and finally exploded.
Kavi insisted that Alheisen was too self-centered and that he could have cared for and helped more people and been welcomed by more people. Alheisen, on the other hand, pointed out that Kavi's unrealistic idealism was an escape from reality and would one day become a burden in his life, the root of which was simply the guilt that Kavi could not avoid.
Their sharp exchanges hurt each other, and ultimately, the experimental report they had worked so hard on together was never completed. Kavi took the torn-up report with him, and Alheisen left in anger.
Their connection came to an abrupt end. After calming down, Elhesen felt apologetic but not regretful. He would still cherish the days he spent communicating with Kavi—those were pure, free, and vibrant times. But now, they were all cold memories.
Years later, when Alhesen met Kavi again, he made another decision. Though outwardly calm, he was somewhat forceful in letting Kavi move into his home. No one knew the turmoil raging within him.
Kavi had a soft heart, something Elhesen never possessed. Even after they had been together for a long time, Kavi would still do things that Elhesen couldn't quite understand. But this time, he didn't use the same sharp words to advise his gentle senior.
"Excuse my bluntness, but you've been deceived." Al-Hysen held the book in his hands, his eyes still fixed on it. Although he spoke of his opinion, he seemed completely absorbed in the knowledge.
"Impossible!" Kavi exclaimed, somewhat agitated upon hearing Elhesen's words. After all, he had only seen her as a pitiful old woman; how could she possibly deceive him? "Selling just one keychain can feed a child from a poor family. It's such a good deal."
"Look, if I buy just one more, I might save a life!"
“Even if I spend all the money I have, I still think it’s worth it.” Kavi’s attitude became even more devout as he said this.
In Elhesen's view, Kavi was sometimes really idealistic. It's not that it's bad, but in a knowledge-centric world, such sentimental people often don't have a very good life. Therefore, Elhesen felt it necessary to remind his senior.
"Don't you know how unreasonable it is that lady's words are, especially considering that medical services are provided free of charge in Sumeru?" Elhesen finally raised his head, his face showing some helplessness, and his eyes filled with emotions that Kavi couldn't understand. But Kavi knew that this time Elhesen didn't seem to want to blame him, nor did he want to mock him.
Kavi was somewhat bewildered and a little aggrieved. Not knowing what to say, he just murmured something and lowered his head. Now, reminded by Elhesen, he wasn't stupid and naturally realized he seemed to have been tricked. He thought he had only done something that, in his opinion, wasn't bad, so why did Elhesen seem angry? And even if he had been tricked, it wouldn't have much impact on Elhesen.
Elheisen sighed, put down his book, and pulled his somewhat aggrieved senior into his arms. Kavi resisted a little, but couldn't resist Elheisen's embrace. Elheisen gently stroked Kavi's face with one hand, while the other wrapped around his waist. Kavi looked like a wronged little hedgehog, curling up his soft belly and raising his sharp quills towards the world.
Elhesen suddenly felt a pang of sympathy for him. "It's alright. Maybe what that lady said is true, and perhaps there really are children who need help."
Listening to Elheisen's somewhat awkward attempts at comforting him, Kavi almost burst out laughing. Only he could elicit a reaction from Elheisen with such dry, unconvincing words. Who comforts someone like that? Elheisen is such an idiot. I'm definitely the first person he'll ever comfort. Thinking this, Kavi, who had been somewhat dejected, suddenly felt better. He slapped Elheisen's hand, then glared at him fiercely.
Taking advantage of Elhesen's momentary lapse in concentration, Kavi jumped off Elhesen's lap. "Being fooled is being fooled, but I definitely won't be fooled next time." He then turned and walked towards the room. "Now I'm going to draw up new blueprints. I'm going to build better houses for those who need them!"
Seeing Kavi revitalized, Elhesen felt a surge of joy. He gazed at Kavi's retreating figure with an unusually gentle look that Kavi hadn't seen. His usually rational and aloof turquoise eyes seemed to flicker with a fiery light; if Kavi had seen it, he would have been awestruck by its beauty.
Kavi admits he can be naive at times, but he doesn't see anything wrong with that. After all, as an architectural scholar with a romantic sensibility, being overly rational isn't always a good thing. Kavi is willing to sing praises to his life and the architecture he loves with genuine emotion and passionate enthusiasm.
Al-Hysen, of course, knew this; he understood Kavi. He knew his dreams and comprehended his thoughts. But all sorts of things could happen, and he couldn't rule out every problem. His senior wouldn't be a trapped bird, unwilling to accept his meticulous care and arrangements.
Kavi possesses an indomitable will, like a pine tree growing on a snow-capped mountain, standing tenaciously atop the peak, never bowing to the ice and snow. The hardships of life cannot defeat him; his burning ideals will allow him to soar freely through the sky like a bird.
Al-Hysen believed his senior was free and invincible. Pure, passionate, and unrestrained. In his eyes, Kavi should be just like that. He didn't need to be troubled by anything else, nor did he need to succumb to the pressures of life. He only needed to pursue his dreams, as long as his eyes sparkled and his face wore a bright smile.
Go do whatever you want to do. This time, no matter what, I will always support you.
My beloved, my love, my Kavi.
