Genius in the whole system: The useless young lady dominates the world
Chapter 174 Ice City
A figure dressed in white, as pure as snow, slowly approached to the melody of a flute. His face was as handsome as jade, and a gentle smile played on his lips, like a snow lotus blooming in the icy world, pure and noble.
"My name is Xin Lanyunge. I greet you both." The man in white smiled slightly, his voice clear and melodious, like a gentle breeze.
Lu Lingxi's heart skipped a beat, "Xinlan?" Isn't that the Xinlan Clan, one of the six great families? They also have branches on the Frostbite Continent?
A hint of wariness flashed in Nalan Rongzhi's deep eyes. His tone was cold, carrying a hint of questioning: "What is your purpose in using the flute to control this giant beast of the ice plains?"
Xin Lanyunge smiled faintly, "I was just passing by when I saw this beast was rampaging, so I subdued it. I had no ill intentions." His gaze fell on Lu Lingxiyao with a hint of appreciation, "Your spiritual power is exceptionally pure."
Lu Lingxi glanced at him coldly, ignoring his praise. She remained wary of everyone, especially in this perilous Frosty Continent. She had only one purpose in coming here: to find the Pure Lotus and rescue Lan Yuan.
Nalan Rongzhi shielded Lu Lingxi Yao behind him, his tone tinged with hostility, "Young Master Xinlan, we are complete strangers to you. We appreciate your kindness, but we can handle this giant ice beast ourselves."
Xin Lan Yun Ge seemed unconcerned about Nalan Rong Zhi's hostility, maintaining her gentle smile, "In that case, I won't bother you any longer."
He blew the jade flute in his hand again, and the giant ice beast that had been lying prostrate on the ground slowly stood up and obediently followed behind him, disappearing step by step into the wind and snow.
As Lu Lingxi watched Xin Lanyunge's departing figure, her doubts deepened.
"Yaoyao, what are you thinking about?" Nalan Rongzhi's gentle voice interrupted her thoughts.
Lu Lingxi Yao snapped out of her reverie and shook her head. "It's nothing." She turned to look at Nalan Rongzhi, a hint of worry flashing in her eyes. "Your demonic poison..."
Nalan Rongzhi took her hand and gently kissed it. "It's alright, I'll control myself." His eyes were filled with tenderness, as if they could melt the ice that had never melted for millennia.
Lu Lingxi's heart trembled slightly. She knew that Nalan Rongzhi had been struggling to suppress the demonic poison in his body for her sake. She reached out and gently stroked his pale face, her eyes filled with heartache.
"We must find the Pure Lotus as soon as possible," Lu Lingxi said firmly.
Nalan Rongzhi nodded. "I will help you find it."
Just then, a chilling laugh broke the silence, and a short, ugly figure slowly emerged from the snow.
It's Ice Fiend!
Lu Lingxi and Nalan Rongzhi became alert at the same time. They hadn't expected that this treacherous and cunning guy hadn't left yet.
"Ice Demon, how dare you show your face again!" Nalan Rongzhi's eyes flashed with killing intent.
Ice Fiend smiled coldly, "Why wouldn't I dare to show up? This is my territory. I can come and go as I please!"
His gaze fell on Lu Lingxi, a lewd glint in his eyes, "This woman, I want her!"
A cold glint flashed in Lu Lingxi's eyes. She hated creatures who thought with their lower bodies the most.
"You're courting death!" Nalan Rongzhi roared, and once again conjured a demonic sword in his hand, slashing fiercely at Bing Sha.
Just then, a huge roar suddenly came from afar, and the ground shook violently, as if some enormous creature was approaching.
"What is that?" Lu Lingxi's heart sank, and an ominous premonition welled up in her mind.
In the distance, a colossal figure slowly approached them. The figure was several times larger than the previous icefield behemoth, radiating a terrifying aura, as if it were an ancient ferocious beast with a world-destroying power.
"Oh no, it's the Snowfield Demon Dragon!" Bing Sha's expression changed drastically, and he shouted in terror.
The moment the Snowfield Demon Dragon appeared, Nalan Rongzhi did not hesitate at all. He grabbed Lu Lingxi Yao's slender waist, used Flash, and disappeared from the spot in the blink of an eye.
Before Bing Sha could react, he was torn apart by the Snow Dragon's enormous claws. After a scream, he fell silent.
When they reappeared, Nalan Rongzhi and Lu Lingxi had already escaped to a safe area.
"This Frosty Continent is indeed fraught with danger," Lu Lingxi said calmly, her tone completely unwavering.
Nalan Rongzhi looked at her, his eyes full of doting affection, "Yaoyao, don't worry, I'm here."
Lu Lingxi nodded gently and said nothing more.
They continued their journey deeper into the Frostland. Although most of the land was covered in ice and snow, there were still some places suitable for human habitation. They traversed frozen forests and crossed frozen rivers, eventually arriving at a city called "Frost City".
The city is built on a huge iceberg, surrounded by towering ice walls, making it look like a giant ice and snow fortress.
Most of the buildings in the city are made of ice and snow, crystal clear, and shimmer with dazzling light under the sun.
Upon entering the city, Lu Lingxi and Nalan Rongzhi immediately attracted the attention of those around them. Their clothing and demeanor were completely out of place; they were clearly not locals.
"You two are from out of town, aren't you?" A burly man with a full beard walked over, his tone tinged with curiosity.
“Exactly,” Nalan Rongzhi replied calmly.
"I am Baruch, the captain of the guards here," the burly man introduced himself. "What brings you two to Ice City?"
“We’re just passing through and want to rest here for a while,” Lu Lingxi said.
Baruch looked them up and down, a hint of wariness flashing in his eyes. "Things haven't been peaceful in the city lately, so it's best not to wander around aimlessly."
Lu Lingxi and Nalan Rongzhi exchanged a glance, both seeing the same question in each other's eyes.
"Something's not peaceful? What happened?" Lu Lingxi asked.
Baruch sighed. "Recently, a strange creature has appeared in the city, specifically attacking people who are alone. Many people have already gone missing."
"A strange creature?" Lu Lingxi frowned slightly. "What kind of creature is it?"
“No one has ever seen its true form; all that is known is that it is extremely fast and incredibly strong,” Baruch said. “The city lord has sent people to investigate, but so far there have been no leads.”
Lu Lingxi and Nalan Rongzhi exchanged a glance, both feeling that something was amiss.
"Thank you for letting me know," Lu Lingxi said. "We will be careful."
Baruch nodded and turned to leave.
Lu Lingxi and Nalan Rongzhi found an inn to stay in. Although the room was simple, it was clean and tidy.
"It seems we're not very lucky; we've run into this kind of thing right after we arrived," Lu Lingxi said.
Nalan Rongzhi smiled. "Perhaps this is an opportunity."
"Opportunity?" Lu Lingxi looked at him, puzzled.
“An opportunity to learn about the Frostbite Continent,” Nalan Rongzhi said. “If we can investigate this matter thoroughly, we might find some useful information.”
Lu Lingxi nodded, agreeing with Nalan Rongzhi's point.
As night fell, the Ice City was shrouded in silence. Suddenly, a piercing scream shattered the tranquility of the night.
Lu Lingxi and Nalan Rongzhi immediately became alert. They quickly dressed and rushed out of the room.
Outside the inn, chaos reigned as people fled in terror, shouting, "The monster is coming!"
Lu Lingxi and Nalan Rongzhi exchanged a glance. It seemed that the mysterious creature had reappeared.
They followed the crowd to the outside of the inn, where they saw a dark figure darting through the street at an astonishing speed.
"Watch out!" Nalan Rongzhi grabbed Lu Lingxi Yao and pulled her behind him.
The dark figure seemed to sense their presence and suddenly turned and charged at them.
A cold glint flashed in Nalan Rongzhi's eyes. He condensed a ball of black demonic energy in his hand and slammed it fiercely towards the dark figure.
The shadowy figure was struck by the demonic energy, let out a sharp roar, and then disappeared into the night.
Everything returned to calm, but an unsettling atmosphere lingered in the air.
"What is that?" Lu Lingxi asked.
Nalan Rongzhi shook his head. "I didn't see it clearly either." He paused, then added, "However, I felt like it was afraid of something."
"What are you afraid of?" Lu Lingxi looked at him, puzzled.
Nalan Rongzhi did not answer. His gaze fell on a tall tower in the distance, and a deep light flashed in his eyes.
"Perhaps we should go there and take a look."
Lu Lingxi had no objection. She always trusted her intuition and Nalan Rongzhi's judgment. The two of them flashed and turned into two streaks of light, heading towards the tower.
The tower stands majestically, its entire body pitch black, incongruous with its surroundings, exuding an eerie aura. Its weathered surface is covered in dark green vines, like ancient veins, silently telling tales of the vicissitudes of time.
The two landed silently and stood beneath the tower. A cold, damp atmosphere rushed towards them, causing Lu Lingxi to frown slightly.
"Be careful," Nalan Rongzhi reminded her, reaching out to hold Lu Lingxi Yao's hand. The warmth from his palm eased her tense nerves a little.
The tower's doors were tightly shut, and strange patterns were carved on them, with some ferocious beast faces vaguely visible, sending chills down one's spine.
Lu Lingxi Yao reached out and gently stroked the cold lines. A chill ran through her fingertips, as if something was trying to invade her body.
"Don't touch it!" Nalan Rongzhi pulled her hand back and shielded her behind him, a hint of worry flashing in his eyes.
Lu Lingxi was slightly taken aback, then realized that her actions had been somewhat rash. She looked up at Nalan Rongzhi with a hint of apology in her eyes, "I'm fine."
Nalan Rongzhi stared at her, and only after confirming that she was truly unaffected did he feel slightly relieved. He took a deep breath, mobilized his spiritual power, and struck the tightly closed door with a palm.
With a loud "boom," the door shattered, splinters flew everywhere, and a strong, chilling aura swept out, carrying a nauseating stench of decay.
The two exchanged a glance and stepped into the tower without hesitation.
The tower was pitch black, with only a few faint rays of light filtering through a hole in the top, illuminating a small area. The air was thick with dust and musty smells, making it difficult to breathe.
“It seems like no one has been here for a long time,” Lu Lingxi Yao said softly, her voice echoing in the empty tower, sounding particularly ethereal.
Nalan Rongzhi nodded, and a ball of eerie blue flame ignited in his hand, illuminating the surrounding environment. The walls inside the tower were covered with strange runes, emitting an eerie light, and some broken bones and rotting clothes were scattered on the ground, making people's hair stand on end.
"It seems something bad happened here before." Lu Lingxi's tone remained calm, but a hint of coldness flashed in her eyes.
The two walked up the spiral staircase. The tower was silent, with only the sound of their footsteps echoing in the empty space.
Suddenly, a gust of cold wind swept overhead, accompanied by a piercing scream that sent chills down one's spine.
"What is that?" Lu Lingxi's eyes sharpened, and she immediately became alert.
Nalan Rongzhi also sensed the chilling aura. He shielded Lu Lingxi Yao behind him, and the dark blue flame in his hand flickered even more intensely, illuminating a section above.
A disheveled female ghost floated in mid-air, her face pale, her eyes sunken, and she emitted a series of shrill screams.
"How dare a mere vengeful spirit act so presumptuously here!" Lu Lingxi snorted coldly, conjuring a dazzling golden light in her hand and unhesitatingly blasting it towards the female ghost.
The female ghost let out a shrill scream, instantly turning to ashes and disappearing into the air.
"It seems this place is not as simple as we imagined." Nalan Rongzhi's tone was grave.
Lu Lingxi nodded, a glint of light flashing in her eyes. "Let's keep going up. I think we'll find the answer soon."
The two continued upwards, the chilling atmosphere inside the tower growing stronger, and various eerie sounds rising and falling, as if something was secretly watching them.
Reaching the top of the tower, a breathtaking view unfolds before you. At the top is a circular platform with a massive altar in the center, covered in eerie runes and radiating a chilling aura.
In the center of the altar, a man chained up lay dying, his body covered in wounds and blood, his breath faint, as if he would die at any moment.
"Nalan Yi?!" Nalan Rongzhi exclaimed in surprise, recognizing the man's identity.
He was none other than his uncle, the enemy who usurped the throne and killed his parents!
Lu Lingxi followed closely behind, her expression cold and stern. Her sharp gaze swept over the runes on the altar before landing on Nalan Yi. This once invincible demon king had fallen to such a state; it was truly lamentable.
As Nalan Rongzhi looked at Nalan Yi, memories flooded his mind: the tragic deaths of his parents, the grief-stricken cries of his clansmen, and the fear of his own hasty escape... all of this was inextricably linked to the man before him.
"How could he be here?" Lu Lingxi broke the silence. Who injured Nalan Yi like this, and what was their purpose in locking him up here?
Nalan Yi seemed to hear their voices. He struggled to raise his head, his cloudy eyes opening slightly. Seeing Nalan Rongzhi, a strange smile appeared on his lips, and his hoarse voice seemed to come from the depths of hell: "...It's you...cough cough...you're still alive..."
"You're not dead yet, how can I die?" Nalan Rongzhi's voice was icy cold and devoid of any emotion.
"I...cough cough...I won't let you go..." Nalan Yi's voice grew weaker and weaker, his eyelids closed heavily, as if he would take his last breath at any moment.
Lu Lingxi squatted down and carefully examined the wounds on Nalan Yi's body. These wounds were not caused by ordinary swords or knives, but by some kind of peculiar energy. The edges of the wounds had an eerie black color, as if they had been corroded.
“These wounds are strange…” Lu Lingxi Yao stood up, her brows furrowed, “They seem to have been caused by some kind of forbidden technique.”
"Forbidden technique?" A hint of doubt flashed in Nalan Rongzhi's eyes. "When did the Demon Clan develop such a forbidden technique?"
Lu Lingxi shook her head: "I'm not sure, but this energy is very evil, and..." She paused, her gaze turning to the runes on the altar, "I've never seen these runes before either."
“These runes seem to be used to suppress Nalan Yi’s power.” Nalan Rongzhi carefully observed the runes, a trace of solemnity flashing in his eyes. “It seems that the person who imprisoned him here is not only powerful, but also very knowledgeable about the demon race.”
“We came here to track down that shadowy figure, but we didn’t expect to run into this.” Lu Lingxi’s gaze fell on the entrance to the tower, which was shrouded in darkness. “It seems that Ice City is more complicated than we imagined.”
“That dark figure…” A cold glint flashed in Nalan Rongzhi’s eyes, “Perhaps it is related to this matter.”
Just then, a faint sound of footsteps came from below the tower, growing clearer and clearer as it approached.
"Someone's coming," Lu Lingxi said in a low voice. She exchanged a glance with Nalan Rongzhi, and the two of them tacitly hid themselves.
The footsteps grew closer, and a figure appeared at the tower entrance. It was a tall woman wearing a black cloak and a mask, obscuring her face. She held a gleaming dagger in her hand and warily looked around.
The woman seemed unaware of their presence. She walked straight to the altar, her gaze falling on the dying Nalan Yi. She slowly removed her mask, revealing a stunningly beautiful face, but her beautiful eyes were filled with indifference and murderous intent.
"Nalan Yi, you never thought you'd end up like this, did you?" The woman's voice was icy cold, like ice. "It's time for you to repay what you owe me."
She raised the dagger in her hand and aimed it at Nalan Yi's heart.
