Chapter 23 Orphanage
Summer days always dawn early. Sunlight streamed through the slightly worn curtains and fell on Jiang Lai's face. She skillfully rolled over and crawled to the other side of the bed, which, as always, creaked open.
Jiang Lai was mostly awakened by the noise, and then finally struggled to sit up. She looked at her phone and saw that it was already past eight o'clock.
"Get up, we have to go back to the orphanage today." Jiang Lai got up, quickly changed her clothes, and went to the bathroom to wash up. Today is Sunday, and her roommates usually sleep in late. Jiang Lai just happened to be sleeping at a different time than them.
"Speaking of which, you mentioned you were going to move?" 001 asked.
"When I was broke, I thought about moving, but now that I have money, I feel it's unnecessary. I've already paid the rent here, so it's good to save some money. Anyway, school will be starting soon." Jiang Lai spat out the foam in her mouth and picked up the new face wash she had bought.
"My skin is so good!" Jiang Lai exclaimed, touching her face. A light pinch left a red mark, and her skin was so tender it looked like it could burst with moisture. "It's so good to be young."
Back in her room, Jiang Lai sat down at her desk. The skincare and makeup products she had just bought yesterday were neatly arranged on the desk, which immediately brought her joy.
"I need a big vanity mirror," Jiang Lai muttered, then applied a lip mask before starting her skincare routine and applying makeup.
The face in the small mirror, which was initially unremarkable, gradually became quite pretty and charming.
Jiang Lai wiped off the lip mask, applied a pink lip gloss, and pursed her lips, making them look moist and glossy. She smiled at herself in the mirror, the corners of her mouth slightly upturned, making her lip cupid's bow even more prominent, so alluring that one would want to reach out and rub it.
"Done!" Jiang Lai spent a lot of time on makeup before she could look presentable enough to go out. "I look alright after makeup."
001: "So?"
"So I still need to focus on the mission. I'm still not satisfied with this face." Jiang Lai stuffed her phone and charger into her bag, packed all the things she bought yesterday, and then strolled out the door.
Even in the early morning, it's hot. The lush roadside trees cast patches of shade on the ground, providing a space for people to breathe. Jiang Lai stood in the shade of one of the trees, waiting for her ride-hailing car.
A white private car stopped in front of her, and Jiang Lai got in. It was about a half-hour drive to the orphanage, not far, but if she took the bus, it would take at least an hour, and walking would take about forty-five minutes. Jiang Lai didn't want to walk or take the bus and take the long way, so she chose to take a taxi.
The car drove fast and steadily, and soon arrived at the gate of the welfare home. The driver reminded Jiang Lai, "Please give me a good review!"
Jiang Lai nodded and then got out of the car.
Standing at the rusty iron gate of the orphanage, the original owner's memories suddenly rushed in, stirring her nerves. Those images surged in her mind, and the previously blurry memories suddenly became clear.
Since she took over this body, the original owner's memories were actually vague. Many things were like being veiled and not clear. For example, Lu Jin did exist in the original owner's memories, but if Jiang Lai hadn't met him at the mall that day, she would never have remembered him.
Just like when the dean called her before, if she hadn't heard her voice, the memory of the dean wouldn't have appeared in her mind.
She's like a player, waiting for the storyline and items in the game to be triggered.
Now, the memories of the orphanage have fully resurfaced in her mind.
This orphanage has existed for a long time. Initially, it housed many children, but as the city built newer and better-equipped institutions, it gradually became deserted. Actually, it started as a personal act of kindness and wasn't an official orphanage. It's truly remarkable that it has survived for so many years. If nothing unexpected happens, once the last dozen or so children are able to support themselves, this place will cease to exist. Currently, it's barely surviving thanks to the director and the support of a few kind-hearted individuals.
The orphanage wasn't large or small; it resembled an old private villa with a garden containing children's toys and facilities. The main building was covered in ivy, lush and green. Unlike the orphanage, which was destined to disappear, the ivy was vibrant and full of life, much like the children inside. They were abandoned, rescued, and would all have a bright future.
"I just said I saw you, why have you been standing there like an idiot for so long without coming in?" A gentle female voice reached Jiang Lai's ears.
Jiang Lai looked in the direction of the voice and saw a woman in her fifties or sixties, wearing reading glasses, with a strong scholarly air about her, wearing a red plaid apron, and smiling at her.
“Mom!” Jiang Lai blurted out.
The dean waved with a smile.
Jiang Lai quickly went up to her, "Mom, I'm back!"
"That's great!" The headmistress tried to pull her along, but then noticed the things she was carrying. "What are these?"
"These are things I bought for my younger siblings!" Jiang Lai dodged her hand that was trying to help. "It's okay, they're not heavy, I'll carry them."
The dean scolded angrily, "I told you we don't need you to buy it! Why don't you listen? How old are you? Do you need to buy this and that for the family?"
Jiang Lai followed her into the orphanage, replying, "I really did make money, quite a lot! Buying these things didn't cost me much at all!"
"You don't need to pay for school anymore? Prices are high in the capital, how can you earn enough to cover your expenses?" The headmistress looked her over. "You've lost weight, are you working particularly hard?"
Jiang Lai was speechless. Just then, she walked into the room, put her things down, and went to the headmistress. "Take a good look at me. How do I look like I've lost weight?"
The headmistress really did scrutinize her closely, her brows furrowed. "You look different than before. You've lost weight and become fairer—"
Doesn't it look much better?
The dean looked at her closely. Jiang Lai was wearing a khaki short-sleeved shirt, light blue jeans, and white sneakers. She looked very much like a student. Her hair was tied in a ponytail, and she looked healthy and vibrant.
The headmistress laughed, "That's true. They say girls change a lot as they grow up. I can hardly remember what you looked like as a baby when you were little, like a bean sprout. Now you're a beautiful young lady, much prettier!"
001: "Don't worry, your changes will seem normal to outsiders. They won't remember what your body originally looked like; they'll just think you've grown up and become more beautiful."
Jiang Lai silently replied to 001: "I understand. I just want her to see that I'm doing well now."
"By the way, where are the others?" Jiang Lai asked.
"They're all doing a thorough cleaning in the back," the headmistress said. "The weather's been nice lately, so they're tidying up the rooms, washing what needs washing, and drying what needs drying. Come on, I'll take you to find them."
“Okay.” Jiang Lai followed her to the back.
There were three staff members from the orphanage there, along with a dozen or so children of all ages who were hanging out their clothes and blankets to dry. Seeing someone arrive, they exclaimed with delight, "Sister Lai Lai!" "Sister!"
Jiang Lai's memories were triggered again.
The first person to call her by her name was Jiang Yue, who also had the surname Jiang, the same as her mother, the hospital director.
Jiang Lai waved to them: "I'll work with you guys, then we'll go to the front. I brought you gifts! There's food, toys, and lots of useful things~"
The children shouted with joy, and some even jumped up and down. There wasn't much left to do, and when they heard there were gifts, they worked even faster, finishing in no time. A group of them surrounded Jiang Lai, asking her all sorts of questions.
"Sister, Mom said you got into the best school, which one is it?"
"What delicious food did your sister bring back?" "Is your sister staying today?" "Is your sister going to study in a faraway place?"
Jiang Lai answered them one by one, then led them forward into the room, where she had the older girls distribute the gifts.
The headmistress went to prepare lunch. Jiang Lai chatted with the children for a while, and then went to the kitchen.
"You're here? I don't need your help, just stand aside." The headmistress deftly handled the meat in her hands, saying gently, "What's the arrangement next?"
"School registration starts on September 11th, and I plan to go there early. I'll wander around the area now to get a feel for it, and maybe check out some tourist attractions along the way." Jiang Lai told the dean about her plans. "I used to be a live streamer online and made a lot of money. I also found a part-time job in Beijing, doing voice-over work for radio dramas. I'll get paid for that too."
"An anchor?" The dean was not out of touch with the times, so she asked, "What anchor?" afraid that Jiang Lai had gone astray.
Jiang Lai looked at the person opposite her with amusement and added, "A voice broadcaster, the kind who reads to people."
"Like an audiobook?" "Something like that!"
"Do you have enough money? Mom has some money prepared for you..."
"It's enough, otherwise why would I have bought a gift? Don't worry, I've already saved up my tuition and living expenses, so it will definitely be enough. I'll also work part-time while I'm in college, so I won't be short of money no matter what."
"That's good. If you need anything, just tell me." The headmistress added, "Don't let anyone bully you outside..."
"I'm not that bad!" Jiang Lai laughed heartily. "I'll go learn Taekwondo, okay? If anyone bullies me, I'll punch them."
"You!" The headmistress shook her head helplessly, "Why are you still the same as when you were a child, always threatening to hit someone?"
“I’ll probably stay there during my holidays and come back during winter break,” Jiang Lai said. “There are more opportunities there, and I’ll probably stay there after I graduate.”
"Oh, that's great! Young people should definitely visit big cities more often!"
"I'll give back to the hospital when I earn money in the future," Jiang Lai said as she helped her prepare the vegetables.
"Okay," the headmistress replied amiably. "Just do what you can. I can still do it now, but I'll stop when Yueyue, Xiaozhi, and the others grow up!"
The headmistress was an open-minded person who took a very relaxed view of everything. She encouraged Jiang Lai's idea of staying in the capital and did not force her to repay her. The two chatted happily for a while before the headmistress kicked her out of the kitchen.
Jiang Lai wandered around the orphanage, looking at the place where the original owner had once lived, and felt a mix of emotions.
"Sister Lai Lai!" A little girl ran up to her.
"What's wrong?" "This is for you! We drew it together!"
Jiang Lai took it; it was a drawing of herself. She smiled and carefully put it away, saying, "Could you thank everyone for me?"
The little girl nodded earnestly and then ran off.
"This place is so nice," Jiang Lai said softly.
001: "Huh?"
"It's just a kind of warm feeling, never mind, you wouldn't understand." Jiang Lai gave a perfunctory reply, then heard someone calling for dinner, so she went back.
Jiang Lai and the other children sat around a large round table, along with several adults. The headmistress poured drinks for everyone and said, "Welcome home to our Lai Lai sister today! She got into the best school, so we want to congratulate her!"
"Congratulations!" the children exclaimed in unison.
At the dean's prompting, Jiang Lai spoke up, "Thank you everyone! I also hope that everyone will study hard in the future and strive to get into the same school as me, so we can earn more money, okay?"
"Okay!" came another unanimous shout.
Aunt Li, who usually takes care of the children, said, "Alright, alright, hurry up and eat! Otherwise, the food will get cold!"
Only then did everyone start eating.
After lunch, the children were supposed to take a nap. Jiang Lai helped the director with some matters at the orphanage for a while before saying she had to leave.
"I've been staying outside lately, is it safe? Why don't you come back and stay here?"
Jiang Lai shook her head. "After graduating from school, I shared an apartment with others. I paid the rent until the start of the semester, and then I moved out and went straight to school."
"Even if I stay in the capital, I will come back to visit."
"Okay, then you can stay here." The headmistress looked at her lovingly. "Even if you're working, don't overwork yourself. You've always been very hardworking and ambitious since you were little, but you need to relax sometimes."
“Okay, I understand,” Jiang Lai replied.
Jiang Lai slowly walked out of the orphanage, holding an umbrella. She planned to take the bus back, but the bus stop was a bit far away, so she had to walk.
"Once I've sorted everything out, I'll transfer the money to the orphanage," Jiang Lai said quietly to 001. "It's a pretty good place here."
001: "Agreed. I just detected that the people at the orphanage have given you a lot of goodwill."
"You've made this all so mercenary," Jiang Lai complained.
001: "I'm just saying. Human interactions are reciprocal. If you treat them well, they'll treat you well in return, right?"
“Yes,” Jiang Lai replied. “Sigh, I don’t know what to do next.”
"Post videos, do live streams! Don't you want your stunning good looks anymore?"
"I want to, but lately I've suddenly felt like slacking off, especially after I finished putting on makeup this morning."
"Is this really you after makeup? You look completely different from your bare face!" "It's me in the original, so how can it not be me? Even if a picture is photoshopped to the point that even your own mother wouldn't recognize it, as long as the original picture is me, it's still me!"
001: "......"
"Just kidding! I still want to become more beautiful. But I really haven't had any inspiration lately, and I don't know what videos to shoot. Let me rest for a couple of days. Even my top fan isn't urging me, so why are you acting like a busybody?"
001 was furious: "I'm not talking to you anymore!"
"I'm sorry~"
Jiang Lai made a few jokes with 001 in her mind before getting on the bus and going home.
