HP: The Root of Everything - The Magician
Chapter 23 Snape's Potions
When it came to attending other professors' lectures, Teach Carr chose to start with first-year courses, among which Potions was of particular interest to him.
Brewing potions is a form of alchemy.
Alchemy is also a cornerstone of magic, and the alchemy circle is just as important.
Today's Potions class was for first-year students from both Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff houses, and Luna was among them.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has over two thousand students, but only a handful of professors, who are responsible for teaching seven years across four houses. If students from two houses weren't arranged to attend classes together, they would be overwhelmed.
In the dimly lit classroom, lit by candlelight, Teach sat in the last row. He found it somewhat amusing to watch the young wizards in front of him whispering and chattering. Potions was Snape's course, and these young wizards would soon witness how formidable the Potions Master was to them.
Suddenly, the wooden door to the classroom was flung open with such a loud noise that Teach strongly suspected Snape had kicked it open.
Snape appeared with a swift and decisive air, then strode onto the podium, his black robes billowing like the wings of a dark bat as he moved with such force.
This powerful aura instantly intimidated the young wizards, silencing them.
When Snape saw Teach Cale sitting in the back row listening to the lecture, he was taken aback. He and Teach had agreed to exchange knowledge, but he did not expect Teach to be so enthusiastic and actually come to class to listen to him teach the foolish little wizard.
But Snape's arrival wouldn't alter the rhythm of his lessons. He coldly addressed the young wizards below, saying, "In my class, waving your wand recklessly and chanting spells without reason are not allowed."
"Actually, I think that not many of you, with your clear-headed foolishness, would understand and appreciate the profound science and intricate craftsmanship of potion-making."
"However, for those few top students—those who truly want to understand potions—I can teach them how to cast spells on the mind, how to trick their senses."
"I will teach him to cultivate fame and create brilliance..."
"He was even taught how to make the elixir of immortality."
【An elixir of immortality?】 Teach had doubts when she heard this. If the potion could really grant immortality, then why would Voldemort split his soul to create Horcruxes?
If immortality were truly possible, how could Albus Dumbledore have aged to such an old age with white hair and a white beard?
Therefore, Teach guessed that the potion Snape mentioned was just a remedy to slow down aging, and that the words "immortality" were a gross exaggeration.
But this doesn't lead Teach Carl to deny the magical elements of Potions.
After Snape recounted the greatness of Potions to the young wizards, he began asking them questions, intending to use these questions to subdue some of the more restless young wizards and ensure that his teaching would not be questioned in class.
The result satisfied Snape; few of the young wizards who only started learning magic at the age of eleven would preview the knowledge in the potions textbook beforehand.
Even if he has prepared in advance, he will still ask difficult questions to achieve his goal.
Well...Teach Carr really liked and approved of Snape's teaching style.
It means that as a student, you can question the knowledge I teach, but you cannot ask questions in class that would undermine my authority as a professor.
After Snape dampened the arrogance of some self-proclaimed genius young wizards by asking them questions, he began the lesson.
First, use a wand to write the name and effect of a potion on the blackboard. Then, write down the required materials and how to make it. Finally, challenge the young wizards to check if they have prepared all the materials.
The slightest mistake would result in Snape's harsh sarcasm and a deduction of points from the young wizard's score.
White cinnamon, daffodils, wormwood—Teach looked at the potion recipe on the blackboard and realized it was a healing potion, so he began to write it down in his handwriting.
It's important to know that his magic book doesn't contain any knowledge about this kind of potion, so potions with various effects are very important to Teach.
The Auror wizard will find him sooner or later; Teach needs to prepare for that day to come and engage in fierce battle.
After Snape and the other young wizards memorized the recipe for the healing potion, they waved their wands to move the desks, turning the classroom into a potion laboratory. They worked in pairs, and each pair had a testing table rise from the ground.
Of course, Snape did not neglect Teach Carl's testing bench.
The young wizards placed the three ingredients into the crucible according to strict measurements, and then stirred them with their wands.
Snape explained very meticulously that stirring with the wand was to inject magic into the pot. While stirring, magic was also used to break down the ingredients, and one had to constantly sense the amount of magic being injected, using one's eyes to judge and analyze the degree of dissolution of the ingredients in the pot.
Once the dissolution reaches the target, the release of magic must be stopped immediately.
Looking at the requirements for brewing potions, Teach felt it was like cooking: magic was the fire, the ingredients were the ingredients, and the wand was the spatula.
Snape kept glancing at Teach Cal out of the corner of his eye, wondering how he used magic to concoct potions.
Snape certainly knew—in fact, all the professors at Hogwarts knew—that Teach Carr was a wizard who was 'almost a Squib,' so Teach must have used magic to make potions.
Under Snape's watchful eye, Teach set aside the three materials needed for the concoction and began to draw an extraction and concoction array on the experimental table with mercury. He then placed the materials one by one into the empty circular array plate on the array.
The materials were rapidly decomposed by the alchemy array, yielding three clumps of medicinal liquid. The liquid then floated above the alchemy array, and as Teach manipulated the magic runes on the array, the three clumps of liquid slowly merged.
Finally, Teach activated the life magic stored in the magic circuits on his back to sense the changes in the fusion of the ingredients in the potion, and a healing gem crystal was completed.
Upon seeing the gem formed, Snape was astonished. He knew that Teach Cal's magic must have a way to make potions, but he never expected that the result would not be a vial of potion, but a gem.
With a curious mind, Snape put aside his instructions to the young wizard and strode forward. After obtaining Teach's permission, he picked up the gem and began to examine it.
Then a huge uproar erupted in his mind: [This potion... no, the magic in this healing gem is actually filled with the power of life, and this healing power is stabilized and preserved. It's completely unlike a solid liquid concocted with magic, whose efficacy gradually diminishes over time.]
This is...this is absolutely unbelievable!
"Professor Teach, may I be so kind as to use it?"
"certainly".
After receiving Teach's permission, Snape decisively took out his wand, then cut a deep wound on his own arm and pressed the Healing Gem against the wound, ignoring the flowing blood.
Upon contact with Snape's wound, the Healing Gem emitted a vibrant green light, symbolizing life.
In less than a breath, the wound healed visibly, returning to its original state without leaving a trace, as if the wound on Snape's arm had never existed.
"Incredible, incredible!" Snape exclaimed in surprise at the effect.
At this moment, he was completely unlike his usual cold and composed personality.
Snape was not only surprised by the healing effect of the Healing Stone, but even more surprised that only one-third of the energy in the stone was used after the treatment.
It should be noted that combining all three ingredients can only produce one vial of healing potion.
One dose of medicine cures one disease.
However, the healing gem that Teach Carl crafted using the same materials could be used three times, and its healing effect was excellent, with visible recovery in the blink of an eye.
Snape returned the Healing Stone to Teach Calorie, then, avoiding the young wizard's eavesdropping, whispered, "Professor Teach, I'm willing to pay the price to learn your potion-making circle, so please come to my office in the Slytherin dormitory tonight."
"I await your arrival, bringing with you knowledge of magic."
