Chapter 99 Li Bai Pretending to be Drunk

"Young Master, what brings you here?" I asked.

"I also want to ask you why you haven't gone home yet, it's getting dark."

"Xuanmeng asked me to have a meal with him, so I was delayed. I was just about to head back," I said.

Li Bai and I rode our horses, carrying lanterns, towards Da'an Mountain.

Back at the Xu residence, Xu Ziyan was in a rage, yelling at Xiaoqian, "I don't want to eat! Go and fetch my son-in-law!"

Li Bai walked in and said, "My dear, what's wrong now?"

Xu Ziyan saw Li Bai and rushed towards him.

I quickly shouted a warning: "Be careful, there's a child in the middle!"

Li Bai supported Xu Ziyan with both hands and hugged her from the side.

"Xiaoqian, isn't the light in this room too bright? Let's go back inside," I said.

"Miss hasn't eaten the nutritious meal that Aunt Wu prepared for her yet?" Xiaoqian said, looking at me.

"I'll eat right away, you guys go back to your room," Xu Ziyan said.

Xiaoqian and I walked out, and as we went, Xiaoqian said, "Miss is becoming more and more dependent on her husband. She's so pregnant, and she's causing us no peace of mind at all. She throws tantrums all the time; I've been scolded several times today. She's getting harder and harder to serve."

"Just bear with her for now, things will be fine once she gives birth," I said.

"Are you going to Baizhao Mountain again tomorrow? I really want to stay with you, Miss."

"Isn't the son-in-law still here?"

"Even sitting inside, the young master is always restless. You see, he's never quite able to sit or stand still. He paces back and forth, giving the young lady a headache."

"Give him a copy of the *Tao Te Ching* or the *Classic of Mountains and Seas*, and he won't keep wandering around like that."

"Really? I'll try it tomorrow."

When I woke up the next day, I saw Li Bai practicing his sword in the small garden. I suddenly remembered what my wife had said about the preciousness of Li Bai's sword, so I took the sword from the table and went to the garden.

"Young master, here's your sword back. It was never used."

"You leave early and return late every day, carry this with you for self-defense," Li Bai said.

"Didn't you give me one when we were at Qingcheng Mountain? I used that one, so I'm returning this one to you."

Li Bai took the sword and said, "A sword should always be carried with you to be effective for self-defense. If you keep it at home all the time, isn't it just like scrap metal?"

"I've got it."

At this moment, Xu Ziyan walked over.

I said, "Yesterday I carefully inspected the new house. All the major items are ready, but the kitchen is missing pots and pans, the bedroom is missing clothes and blankets, and the study is missing books. I plan to go to Anlu today to buy the kitchen supplies. Don't look for me. I'll take the carriage myself."

Li Bai said, "I'll go with you."

"No, the young mistress can't be without you. I'll have Wu Chao come with me in a bit."

"I asked Xiaoqian to inform Wu Chao. Yuehua understands me best." After Xu Ziyan finished speaking, she went into the room and took out a few silver notes, handing them to me.

After breakfast, Wu Chao and I got into the carriage, ready to go to Anlu, when Li Bai came over. He seemed to want to say something, but after touching the carriage with his hand, he didn't say anything and went back.

I wondered to myself what Bo Bai really wanted. Could it be alcohol? I hadn't seen him drink these past two days.

After buying all the kitchen supplies in Anlu, I passed by a wine shop and bought a few jars, which I then loaded into the car and transported to Bai Zhaoshan's new home.

Back home, I quietly said to Li Bai, "Young Master, I've bought the wine and placed it in the new house. You can stay here for a few days without worry; once you move upstairs, you'll have something to drink."

"My page understands me best; I'm relieved."

Over the next few days, I gradually replenished the missing items on Bai Zhao Mountain. Master Xu consulted someone and decided on the moving date. Li Bai planned to move almost half of the books in the Xu family's study to Bai Zhao Mountain. Xu Ziyan presented a list of the items we were moving to Master Xu and his wife.

Mrs. Xu said, "Moving so little is not enough." She then added some more.

Master Xu finalized the list of servants to be sent to Bai Zhao Mountain. He said, "Wu Chao, you will be the young lady's housekeeper. Wu Ma, Xiao Qian, and Zhang Ma, the three of you will go. I will hire two more male servants. That should be enough staff, daughter. Do you think that's sufficient?"

Xu Ziyan looked at Li Bai and said, "Husband, is this enough for you?"

Li Bai said, "That's enough. Actually, we don't need that many. Mother will be upset if Wu Ma leaves. Let's leave Wu Ma with Mother."

Madam Xu said, "My son-in-law still cares about me. Wu Ma doesn't go upstairs; she stays down here to help me manage things in this courtyard. Otherwise, someone will cause a huge uproar." As she spoke, she glanced at the second concubine, whose happy face immediately changed.

On the eve of the move, everything was packed up under the care of Wu Ma and Zhang Ma. The Xu family gathered together for a reunion dinner. The happiest person at the meal was the second concubine, but Madam Xu held back so as not to spoil the mood.

The happiest person was Li Bai. Thinking about moving to Baizhao Mountain the next day, Li Bai drank cup after cup, and by the end of the banquet, he was quite drunk. Xiaoqian helped Xu Ziyan, and I helped Li Bai, as we walked towards their room.

Back in the room, I helped Li Bai sit down in a chair. Xu Ziyan said, somewhat angrily, "You're so drunk today, you're not allowed in my bed." Before she could finish speaking, Li Bai suddenly stood up and was already lying on the bed. This left the three of us both amused and exasperated.

"Xiaoqian, go fetch some water for your son-in-law to wash up, and I'll get him some tea to help him sober up," I said.

Xiaoqian and I left the room. Xu Ziyan looked helplessly at Li Bai lying on the bed, and took out a handkerchief to wipe the sweat from his forehead. Li Bai suddenly grabbed her hand and said, "Baby, tomorrow we'll have our own home. I'm so happy, I'm not drunk at all."

"You're not drunk? What are you pretending for? You made it so my parents couldn't finish explaining things to you."

"I just wanted to escape my parents' nagging. They've been nagging me since morning, and no matter how much I promise them, they just won't believe me."

Before Li Bai could finish speaking, Master Xu and his wife reached the door. I happened to return with some tea to help them sober up, and quickly greeted them, "Master and Madam, aren't you resting yet?"

Master Xu said, "Let's see how drunk our son-in-law is." With that, he and his wife went into the house. Li Bai quickly lay down to sleep, and Xu Ziyan stood up to greet Master Xu and his wife.

"Father, Mother, you've had a long day, you should rest too. My husband is fine, just a little dizzy, and he's already asleep."

I went to the bedside and woke Li Bai: "Young master, the master and madam have come to see you. Get up and have some tea to sober up."

Li Bai woke up, rubbing his head, and said, "Father, Mother, I'm fine, just a little dizzy. I'll feel better after lying down for a while."

Madam Xu said, "You can't drink like this when you go to Baizhao Mountain. You're the man of the house, you have to take care of the whole family." Madam Xu was about to continue when Xu Ziyan interrupted her.

"Mother, we understand. You and Father should go back and rest."

Xu Xianwai and his wife reluctantly walked towards the door, but turned back to me at the door and said, "Yuehua, come to the study, we have something to tell you."

"Okay, I'll be right there," I replied.
