Chapter 163 Master Baiyun's Promise

I led the horse out, handed the reins to the young nun, and then walked into the monastery.

"I saw you a long time ago, why are you leading the horse?" Han Zhun's voice suddenly came out, startling me.

"Mr. Han, you always surprise us; it's quite frightening." I walked towards the flower bed, and Han Zhun stood up from under it.

I said, "I'll take the horse to fetch some supplies. Baiyun Nunnery is out of food; I'll accompany the young monk to buy some."

"You and your young master go there to freeload every day, no wonder you finish all the food," Han Zhun said.

"Mr. Han, will you come with us? Abbess Baiyun is back."

"The nun is back! Has your young master become an apprentice? Come on, I want to go too!"

"Not yet."

Han Zhun called out to the house, "Great monk, I'm leaving. Take good care of the house."

"You can leave now, I understand."

Han Zhun followed us toward the market at the foot of Lingguang Temple Mountain.

We bought everything we needed at the market, and as we passed the meat stall, I hesitated and glanced at it countless times.

Han Zhun said, "Let's go quickly. Do you want to fight Master Baiyun?"

"Living in a Buddhist temple or a nunnery is so restrictive; you can't even eat anything good. I'm so hungry!" I said.

The young nun said, "Do you sell tofu? Let's buy some and fry it up; it'll be very satisfying."

"Little master, that's a great idea. Let's go buy tofu," I said.

We bought several pieces of tofu, which we handed to Han Zhun to carry. I led the horse carrying the goods and followed the little nun toward Baiyun Nunnery.

When we returned to Baiyun Temple, the gates were wide open, but Li Bai and Abbess Baiyun were not outside.

Han Zhun, carrying the tofu, entered the nunnery first and called out loudly, "Master Baiyun, long time no see! I've come to see you!" Han Zhun called several times, but no one answered. I moved the things to the kitchen, and the young nun searched all over the nunnery before coming to us and saying:

"My master wasn't killed by your young master, was he? Did your young master escape?"

"Little Master, you have quite the imagination. Why didn't it be your master who killed my young master and escaped?" I said.

The young nun said with a mournful face, "It's all your fault! I wanted to stay with my master, but you insisted on making me leave, saying they would reconcile. You're a liar!"

"He's not lying to you. Look at those two people standing by the mountain; don't they look like them?" Han Zhun said, standing at the entrance of Baiyun Temple and gazing at the mountainside.

The little nun and I ran out of the store and came to Han Zhun's side. We looked in the direction he was pointing and sure enough, we saw a person standing on each of two large rocks on the distant mountainside.

"It's my master!" the little nun said with delight, then quickly called out at the top of her lungs, "Master, we're back!"

Li Bai and Abbess Baiyun turned around when they heard the shouts, and I waved to them.

"Little Master, you can rest assured now. Let's go cook," I said.

"You two go cook, I'll go find Li Bai and Abbess Baiyun," Han Zhun said as he walked towards the mountainside.

I opened my mouth to stop Han Zhun, but what came out was, "Okay, we'll call you when the food is ready."

The young nun and I worked together, and soon a table full of fragrant vegetarian food was laid out.

When I arrived at the gate of the temple, I saw Li Bai and Han Zhun sitting on a large rock, and Abbess Baiyun sitting on another large rock, with her back to Baiyun Temple and her eyes fixed on the horizon, motionless.

I called out loudly, "Young Master, you're back for dinner!"

Upon hearing the shout, the three stood up at the same time. Abbess Baiyun walked in front, while Li Bai and Han Zhun followed behind, heading towards Baiyun Nunnery.

After lunch, Abbess Baiyun led the young nuns to do their Buddhist prayers. I moved a stool to the banyan tree in front of the nunnery and brewed tea for Li Bai and Han Zhun. I climbed the banyan tree, leaned against a large branch, and fell asleep without realizing it.

"Yuehua, you really know how to find a place to sleep. Get up, it's time to go back to Lingguang Temple." I vaguely heard the shout, opened my eyes and saw Li Bai standing on the tree branch next to me.

"Young Master, why did you come up here? You could have just shaken the tree a couple of times and woken me up, right?"

"We shook you twice, but we couldn't move you even once. We called you, but you wouldn't wake up, so we had no choice but to come up here," Li Bai said.

I sat up and said, "I'm sorry, young master, I'll go down right away."

Li Bai climbed down the big tree first. I tried to stand up and climb down, but my legs were numb and wouldn't obey me. I cried out, "Young master, my legs are numb, I can't get down the tree."

Just then, the leaves rustled slightly, and Master Baiyun stood in front of me. She held a whisk in one hand and grabbed my arm with the other. With a little effort, we were standing under the big tree.

I looked at her with surprise and said, "Master, I don't want to learn swordsmanship, I want to learn this."

Master Baiyun glanced at me disdainfully and said, "Who's your master? I don't accept male disciples."

Li Bai quickly said, "Okay, okay, I'll count myself in too. I'll learn swordsmanship, and he'll learn lightness skills."

Li Bai pulled me close and made me kneel down before Abbess Baiyun. We said in unison, "Master, please accept our bow."

Han Zhun, adding fuel to the fire, said, "They've traveled all the way to Shimen Mountain to admire Master Baiyun's superb swordsmanship. Let's take them in. One can write poetry, and the other can play music. When you're tired from practicing, have them perform for you. Wouldn't that be delightful and a good deal?"

Master Baiyun, who was about to walk into Baiyun Nunnery, suddenly turned around and said, "You two get up. Let's see if you can amuse me before I decide whether to accept you as disciples."

I adjusted my kneeling posture, kneeling on one knee, and cupped my hands in a fist salute, saying, "Master, please watch us."

Li Bai and I stood up. I drew my jade flute from my waist, held it with both hands, and tried playing it. After finding the right tune, I began to play "Moon over the Mountain Pass." As soon as the music started, Li Bai drew his sword from his waist and, while dancing, sang: "The bright moon rises over the Tianshan Mountains, amidst the vast sea of clouds. The long wind blows for tens of thousands of miles, passing through the Jade Gate Pass. The Han army descends the Baideng Road, while the barbarians spy on the Qinghai Bay. This has always been a battlefield, where no one returns. The soldiers on guard gaze at the border towns, their faces etched with longing for home. In the high tower this night, their sighs will not cease."

As the music ended, Li Bai struck a graceful pose and stopped in front of Abbess Baiyun.

Master Baiyun gazed at Li Bai, a hint of bewilderment in her eyes. She said softly, "You play the music well, and write the lyrics even better. I imagine my senior brother suffered just as much when he was stationed on the frontier. Li Bai, you are a master; I truly cannot accept you as my disciple. You should become a student of my senior brother, Pei Min; only he can teach you."

"Please trouble you, nun, to introduce me. General Pei is the greatest swordsman in the world. I am but an unknown nobody; I'm afraid it would be difficult for me to even meet him," Li Bai said.

"Since retiring to General Mountain, my senior brother has kept to himself and refused to see anyone. He won't show himself easily. How about this, you wait for the right opportunity, and I'll figure out a way."

"Thank you, Master." Li Bai knelt on one knee and clasped his hands in a fist salute.

"Are you all done talking? What am I going to do? General Pei won't accept me as his disciple," I said anxiously.

Master Baiyun looked at me and said, "You'll come with me. I'll teach you light-body skills so you can run faster when you're escaping."

I knelt down and said loudly, "Thank you for taking me in, Master. I will study hard and never suffer a loss in a fight."

The four of them burst out laughing.
