Chapter 162 Abbess Baiyun

When we arrived at the front mountain dining hall, the monks were already eating. As soon as we sat down, the monk in charge of distributing the food brought us five portions. The monks ate and chatted, having a lively time.

"Eating here is different from eating at Shaolin Temple; it's much more relaxed," I said.

A moment later, the Master of Intelligence brought his meal and sat down in front of us. Li Bai quickly stood up and said, "Master, we've disturbed your temple again."

"Don't say anything like 'intruding.' We warmly welcome you to Hansi Temple. Have a meal, and we'll chat afterwards," said the Master of Intelligence.

After the meal, the Intelligent Master led the three of us to the Sutra Repository. After we sat down in the reception room, the Intelligent Master said:

"Master Taibai, you are a believer in Taoism, and I would like to discuss some issues related to the *Tao Te Ching* with you."

"Master, although I believe in Taoism, I am still a mortal. My understanding of morality may not be as profound as yours. I hope you will forgive my shallow words," Li Bai said humbly.

The AI master said, "Let's learn from each other."

The intelligent master, Li Bai, and Han Zhun discussed the Tao Te Ching in the reception room, attracting the attention of many monks who were reading in the library.

Li Bai said: "Our ancestors' view that 'Tao is inaction, yet all things are governed; virtue is inaction, yet the world is governed' does not mean doing nothing in the face of all things, but rather acting in accordance with the natural laws. Inaction is doing everything; just as if we want to live a long and healthy life, we must strengthen our bodies, avoid illness, or minimize illness, so that we can live healthily..."

Li Bai's impassioned speech, full of classical allusions, was met with enthusiastic applause. The monks looked at him with envy and admiration.

A monk asked, "Master Li Bai, you've cited dozens of allusions. How much time do you spend reading each day?"

Li Bai replied, "My three greatest passions in life are swordsmanship, reading, and travel. I begin my swordsmanship practice at the first crow of the rooster in the morning, and then I read. In my hometown, at the reading platform on Xiaokuang Mountain, there are still traces of books imprinted on the ground, and ashes from the burning incense burner remain. I have traveled to countless mountains, rivers, scenic spots, and historical sites; traveling ten thousand miles is like reading ten thousand books. This master, I should say, is reading at all times." After Li Bai finished speaking, another round of thunderous applause erupted.

The discussion in the Sutra Repository lasted all afternoon, attracting a growing crowd. Li Bai thus became famous at Lingguang Temple, and even those who came to burn incense there knew that a reclusive master lived there. However, Li Bai's movements were greatly restricted, and he could only move around in the back mountain all day, because going to the front mountain would easily attract crowds and cause unnecessary disturbances.

After settling into Lingguang Temple, Li Bai took me to Baiyun Nunnery every day to wait for Abbess Baiyun. One day, we arrived at Baiyun Nunnery again. The young nuns there were already quite familiar with us. As soon as we arrived, one of the nuns said:

"Yuehua, my nunnery is out of food. I have to go out and beg for alms, or we won't have anything to eat tomorrow."

"How many households do you need to ask for to gather some grain? I'll go buy it," I said.

"Few people come to our nunnery to burn incense, so we don't have much money," the young nun said.

"You don't need to pay, I'll pay. Consider it our way of burning incense," Li Bai replied.

I asked, "Where do you usually go to buy things? I'm going back to Lingguang Temple on horseback; I'll be back in a little while."

"There's a market at the foot of Lingguang Temple. We can buy things there," the little nun said.

"Little master, do you eat meat? I'll buy some meat." I asked.

"Yes, you can eat, I can eat a little," the little nun said.

"Amitabha, this is a pure Buddhist temple, how dare we speak nonsense?" A voice suddenly came from behind us. The three of us turned around and saw a young and beautiful nun standing behind us, carrying a sword on her back, holding a whisk in her hand, her eyes glaring at us with fierce intensity.

The young nun rushed over and grabbed her arm, saying, "Master, you're back! I was starving to death if you hadn't come back!"

"Is it because those two ate your food?" Master Baiyun asked.

"No, they came to see you, and they often bring me food."

"You didn't bring any meat, did you?"

"No, just some vegetarian food."

"That's more like it."

Li Bai quickly stepped forward and apologized, saying, "Master, you are very magnanimous. I spoke without thinking, uttering disrespectful words at the feet of Buddha. Please forgive me."

Master Baiyun gazed intently at Li Bai, a hint of joy in her eyes, and said, "Benefactor, you are originally from a secular family, so it's not surprising that you would say such things. It's just that my disciple lacked self-control and couldn't resist temptation. Please forgive his rudeness."

"I haven't bought it yet, and the little master hasn't eaten it either. Abbess, please don't put such a big accusation on the little master," I said.

"Young benefactor, to stand up for someone in need requires the ability to do so. Give it a try." Abbess Baiyun flicked her whisk at me, and I dodged to the side. But Abbess Baiyun's whisk grew faster and faster. I dodged left and right, then simply turned and ran swiftly down the mountain. I only stopped when I felt the wind had died down behind me.

I turned around and saw that I had already run down to the flat ground at the foot of the mountain, while Li Bai was fighting with Abbess Baiyun on the mountaintop. I went back up the mountain and saw that Abbess Baiyun had tucked her whisk into her waistband and drawn her sword, fighting Li Bai to a standstill.

I walked over to the young nun and saw her anxiously stamping her feet and crying out, "Master, please stop hitting them! They are good people; they often help me carry water and gather firewood."

I tugged at the young nun's sleeve and said, "Don't worry, they're just training here, they're not really fighting."

"They've already started fighting, so what's the point of faking it? It's all my fault; I just wanted to taste what meat tastes like."

"Let them fight, we're going to buy things," I said to Little Nido.

"No, what if they hurt each other? I need to stay with Master."

"Don't watch them. Maybe they'll stop fighting once we leave, since no one will watch them fight anyway."

The young nun blinked, scratched her head, and said, "You're right, let's go."

I called out to Abbess Baiyun and Li Bai, "Abbess, Young Master, you two focus on fighting. My junior master and I are going shopping."

Li Bai replied, "Go ahead, buy more."

Master Baiyun said, "We cannot buy meat; it violates the rules of Buddhism."

"Alright, we'll do as you two say. We're leaving now." I led the little nun toward Lingguang Temple.

"Little Master, I'll go to Lingguang Temple to fetch more horses so we can eat for a longer time," I said.

"Aren't you and your young master leaving? Master won't let you stay in the nunnery."

"Young monk, don't you have any guest rooms in your nunnery?"

"There are two rooms, but they were only used by Uncle-Master Pei for a few days a few years ago. No one else has stayed there since."

"Who is Uncle-Master Pei?"

"My master's senior brother is an official. He wields the sword beautifully. He practiced with my master every day for those few days, and my master was very happy."

"Didn't he take your master with him when he left?"

"No, after my uncle left, my master didn't speak to me for several days and ignored me completely. I don't know what I did wrong?"

"Little Master, you are not wrong. It is the person in heaven who tied the red thread that is wrong. Enough said, we've arrived. Wait for me here, I'll go get the horse." I walked towards the stables in the Zen temple behind the mountain.
