Chapter 12 Mid-Autumn Festival at Longxi Academy (2)

After everyone finished eating, the master personally escorted Li Yangbing to his lodgings, and then went back to his room to rest. Ziyi and I helped Li Bai up and walked towards the bedroom. Unexpectedly, Li Bai casually picked up a pot of wine from the table and drank it as he walked, truly deserving of the title "Wine Immortal".

It was the Mid-Autumn Festival. As usual, Li Bai got up early to read in the garden. As soon as he entered the garden, he ran into Li Yangbing: "Good morning, Uncle. I'm sorry, I got drunk last night."

"You're still the same as always, once you pick up your glass, you won't stop until you're drunk. After a couple of drinks, your writing flows like a spring. Keep all your manuscripts safe, I'll publish a collection of your poems sometime."

"Uncle, please forgive my ramblings. I was just drunk and talking nonsense. Please forgive me."

The two walked and chatted along the lakeshore, discussing everything from the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods to the Sui and Tang dynasties, from the Book of Songs to the various schools of thought. Li Bai spoke eloquently and fluently, leaving Li Yangbing deeply impressed. He repeatedly praised him, saying, "My twelfth nephew is truly learned and knowledgeable; he will surely achieve great things in the future."

Just then, the woman in purple ran over: "Young Master, Young Master, breakfast is ready."

After breakfast, Li Bai accompanied Li Yangbing to the study, where Li Bai sought instruction in the writing and carving of seal script. Xuan paper was laid out on the table, and Li Yangbing demonstrated on the spot. With swift strokes, small seal script calligraphy appeared before their eyes. Li Bai clapped his hands in amazement, unable to contain his excitement, and also picked up a brush to carefully ask Li Yangbing for guidance.

Outside the study, however, it was bustling with activity. Since it was the Mid-Autumn Festival, everyone got up early, especially the young masters and ladies. They didn't have to go to school today, so they went to play in the garden in groups early in the morning.

The kitchen was the busiest place, filled with the sounds of stir-frying and serving dishes. Uncle Lu and Aunt Lu were the busiest people, having to direct the servants while also obeying their masters' orders. By noon, a dozen tables laden with delicious-looking dishes were laid out.

The guests arrived one after another. The master had invited not only well-known local gentry but also business partners who were staying in Qinglian. Yueyuan's fiancé, Wu Zhinan, was the first to arrive with his parents. After arriving, he stayed in the study with Li Bai and the others. Yueyuan passed by the study several times but did not dare to go in and greet them.

The Mid-Autumn Festival banquet began. Guests followed the host's lead and took their seats. Ziyi and I each held a wine jug and filled everyone's cups. Li Bai stood up and proposed a toast: "The first cup wishes everyone a happy Mid-Autumn Festival," he said, downing it in one gulp. Ziyi and I quickly refilled the cups. "The second cup wishes our Li family continued good fortune and ever-increasing prosperity." "The third cup wishes our Li family men a flourishing career and widespread fame." After three cups, Li Bai drank with increasing gusto, constantly standing up to offer toasts in all directions.

I quickly went over: "Young Master, you can't get drunk at noon today. You have to entertain guests this afternoon and host the Mid-Autumn Festival garden party tonight."

"Oh, I see. You go ahead and do your work," Li Bai said reluctantly.

The Mid-Autumn Festival was at its most lively in the evening. The master invited a famous local opera troupe to perform in the garden, and a lantern riddle guessing activity was also held there. A stage was set up in the center of the garden, and a high platform was built next to it, which was where those who guessed the lantern riddles correctly received their prizes. There were many prizes, including food and household items, as well as a finely crafted jade rabbit pendant. Uncle Lu also prepared many different kinds of mooncakes and placed them on the tables in the garden. Everyone ate mooncakes while strolling around the garden and watching the opera.

"Dear family and friends, the Mid-Autumn Festival lantern riddle guessing activity is now beginning! Let me announce the rules: As you can see, many lanterns are hung in our garden. Some lanterns have riddles on them, along with a number. If you know the answer to a riddle with a given number, come up to this platform and tell us. If you guess correctly, you can receive a corresponding reward. The more riddles you guess correctly, the more rewards you get. Everyone, get moving! Just to emphasize, everyone here can participate!" Before Li Bai could finish speaking, the young ladies and gentlemen all ran towards the lanterns. Soon, many had won prizes.

"Young Master, your master has sent someone with a message, and they are waiting in the hall," Uncle Lu said hurriedly as he ran up to Li Bai.

"Yuehua, you're in charge of redeeming the prize here. I'll be right back," Li Bai said, and walked towards the lobby.

A short while later, Li Bai returned to the garden, looking excited. He sat down beside his parents and whispered something to them, which pleased the master and mistress. Li Bai then returned to the prize redemption table.

"Yuehua, my master has traveled to Mount Daitian. We'll go there to find him tomorrow."

"Has my aunt arrived yet?" I asked.

"No, only my master."

More and more people guessed the riddles correctly, and seeing that we were overwhelmed, Yueyuan came to help us. Finally, only one riddle remained, and several people still hadn't guessed it. Wu Zhinan walked to the lantern, casually tore off the riddle, and brought it to us.

Li Bai asked, "So confident that you've torn down all the riddles?"

"Of course, if I can't guess it, no one else can. This riddle must have come from the full moon!" Wu Zhinan said.

I laid out paper and pen, and Wu Zhinan wrote down the answer to the riddle. He guessed it correctly! And the prize was the jade rabbit pendant. Only then did I remember that the pendant was also donated by Yueyuan.

Yueyuan's face flushed instantly, too shy to look Wu Zhinan in the eye. I handed her the jade pendant: "Miss, please present this award to Young Master Wu!"

Yueyuan hesitated to accept the jade pendant, yet she was unwilling to give up. She stared at me with wide eyes, and I forcefully shoved the pendant into her hand: "Go on, the winner is waiting."

Yueyuan shyly approached Wu Zhinan. Wu Zhinan lowered his head and stared at Yueyuan in a daze. Yueyuan wrapped her arms around Wu Zhinan's neck and hung the jade pendant around his neck. Their eyes met, filled with tenderness, and everything was understood without words.
