Chapter 11 Mid-Autumn Festival at Longxi Academy (1)
After we returned to Longxi Courtyard, Madam's illness quickly improved. Happy laughter often echoed from her room, and Master was always all smiles.
Time flies, and the Mid-Autumn Festival on the fifteenth of August is just around the corner. The whole hospital is busy preparing for this traditional festival. Uncle Lu and Ziyi drive the horse-drawn carriage around all day to buy things. In addition to buying food, they also buy new clothes for everyone in the hospital.
That day, Li Bai called me into his study: "Yuehua, go and change into this new outfit."
"Okay," I said, picking up my clothes and heading to my room.
"Just change here. There aren't any women around. You think I'm going to stop you?"
"No." I hurriedly ran into the room and closed the door.
When I stood before Li Bai after changing my clothes, he rubbed his eyes and said, "I can't believe there's such a handsome page."
"Young master, stop joking. These clothes are really comfortable to wear."
"Of course, Madam specifically ordered the silk fabric to be made for you."
"Thank you, Madam. Thank you, Young Master."
"Young master, Miss asked you to come up with riddles, so we made a lot of lanterns," said Ziyi, who was wearing new clothes, as she ran into the study.
"Okay, once I've written it, you can take it and put it up."
Li Bai casually wrote dozens of riddles, and Ziyi and I walked towards the garden with the riddles in our hands.
When we arrived at the garden after passing the third courtyard, a large crowd had already gathered. Uncle Lu was directing them to hang lanterns, and adults and children alike were happily vying to help. The lanterns started from the pavilion in the middle of the lake, circling the lake along the corridor. They were predominantly red and came in various shapes, including rectangular, round, and cylindrical.
Yueyuan was putting up riddles with her sisters and their maids.
Ziyi and I approached the full moon and handed her the riddle written by Li Bai: "Miss, this is a riddle from the young master," Ziyi said.
Yueyuan took the riddles and read them carefully: "Brother is the best; he writes them quickly and well. With his help, we have enough riddles. Yuehua, tell him in a bit that he'll be hosting the riddle-guessing activity at the park tonight. Here, these are the answers to all the riddles; keep them safe. We'll put the prizes on the stage in a little while."
I took the answer and put it in my bag: "I'll go tell the young master in a bit. Ziyi and I will stick it on together too."
"Okay, some of the higher ones are too high for us to reach, so you guys can do it," said Yueyuan.
"Alright, Miss, leave the difficult parts to me and Ziyi," I said.
They spent several hours just putting up riddles, and when they got to the pavilion in the middle of the lake, everyone was so tired that they sat down on chairs and didn't want to get up.
This is a small lake, formed by the seepage of the Fu River outside the courtyard wall. It's surrounded by willows and various flowers. A gentle breeze stirs, and the willow branches lightly brush the water's surface, creating ripples. The fragrance of the flowers wafts through every corner of the garden on the breeze. Sitting in the pavilion, gently breathing in the floral scent, is incredibly pleasant.
At this moment, Li Bai entered the garden with his brothers. After looking around, they headed towards the pavilion in the middle of the lake. I quickly went to greet them: "Young Master, Miss Yueyuan said she wants you to host the lantern riddle guessing activity in the garden. She gave me the answers."
"Alright, you can put them away there. I'll host the performance. Go fetch my sword and zither, and we'll play a piece together."
"Okay," I said, running to the study to fetch the sword and the zither.
I gently stroked the strings of my zither, and Li Bai drew his sword, then began to dance gracefully, playing Tao Yuanming's "Drinking Wine: I Built My Hut in the Midst of Humanity": "I built my hut in the midst of humanity, yet there is no noise of carriages and horses. You ask me how this can be? When the heart is far away, the place naturally becomes secluded. I pick chrysanthemums by the eastern fence, and leisurely gaze at the Southern Mountain. The mountain air is beautiful at sunset, and the birds fly back together. There is true meaning in this, but I have forgotten the words to express it." Li Bai's song drifted into the distance.
Following Li Bai's lead, everyone took turns performing, singing, dancing, or reciting poetry, making the pavilion lively and bustling.
It was almost dinnertime, and everyone was still reluctant to leave. The master, accompanied by Uncle Lu, came over: "Twelve, your uncle has arrived in Changlong County. You and your Uncle Lu should go and greet him!"
"Alright, Father, I'll set off with Uncle Lu to fetch my younger brother right away," Li Bai agreed, casually slung his sword over his shoulder. I also stood up and ran ahead to lead out my horse.
The three of us left the Longxi compound, mounted our horses, and galloped towards Changlong County. As we approached the county town, we saw a man riding a black horse galloping towards us in the distance: "Uncle Lu, it might be my younger uncle."
The three of us stopped our horses, and when the black horse came up in front of us, Li Bai recognized his uncle, Li Yangbing.
"Uncle, you must be tired from your journey."
Li Yangbing also stopped his horse and greeted Li Bai, saying, "Twelve, when did you return home? You've grown even more dashing and elegant in these past few years."
"I went home a few days ago and found out that my uncle was coming to Qinglian for the Mid-Autumn Festival. I was very happy, finally having the chance to ask him for advice."
"Twelve is too modest. Your poetry and prose are already renowned throughout Western Shu, praised by everyone. Let's not talk about seeking your guidance; we can only say we learn from each other."
After exchanging pleasantries, we headed towards Longxi Courtyard.
The gate of Longxi Academy was already crowded with people waiting to welcome Li Yangbing. Li Bai's father, mother, brothers and sisters all came out.
Li Yangbing dismounted from a distance and walked to the gate of Longxi Courtyard. Li Bai's father took Li Yangbing's hand and led him into the courtyard. The others followed closely behind.
Upon entering the hall, after the guests and hosts took their seats, Li Yangbing was the first to rise and greet Li Bai's parents: "Brother and sister-in-law, how have you been? We've missed you dearly for several years."
"My dear brother, thank you for your concern. Everything is fine here, and business is going well. I hope your aunt and uncle are in good health! And how are your wife, nephews, and nieces?"
"Brother, don't worry, they are all well."
Then the nephews and nieces paid their respects to their uncle, and the whole family chatted happily in the hall before moving to the dining room for dinner, enjoying a harmonious and joyful time together.
Li Bai hadn't enjoyed this kind of family atmosphere for a long time. He was so engrossed in it that he unknowingly drank two more cups and passed out.
