Don't meet me in your next life.

Chapter 22 Grandma Leaves

After finishing the groundbreaking ceremony at the construction site and supervising the site for a while, Lin Lubai and Xiao Zhao drove to the hotel.

Once they reached an area with a signal, Lin Lubai's phone kept ringing with a bunch of unread messages and missed calls.

Upon seeing Xiang Yiyi's message, Lin Lubai's face turned ashen: "Xiao Zhao, quick, go back to Shashi immediately."

"What's wrong, Mr. Lin?" Xiao Zhao asked in surprise.

"Something happened to Grandma Yi." Without time to explain, he dialed Yi's number.

"Hey, Yi Yi, I just saw the call. I'll be right back," Lin Lubai said impatiently as soon as the call connected.

“This is Xiao Qing. Yi Yi is at the funeral hall. Her phone is with me. Please come back quickly,” Xiao Qing said.

"Grandma is gone?" Lin Lubai asked in surprise.

"Yes, I left this morning. Yi tried calling you but couldn't get through," Xiao Qing said.

"Please take good care of Yi Yi for me. I'll be right back, thank you."

"Xiao Zhao, stop the car, I'll drive," Lin Lubai said to Xiao Zhao.

Lin Lubai got into the car and sped off, leaving Xiao Zhao feeling nauseous. What usually takes 6 hours, he covered in 4 hours.

Upon arriving at the mourning hall, Yi Yi knelt there, her eyes red and swollen. Lu Sichen and Xiao Qing stood beside her.

In the center of the hall, Liu Xiuzhen's body was placed in an ice coffin, with a portrait of her in front of it.

Lin Lubai knelt down, offered incense to his grandmother, and went to the coffin to see her. Tears involuntarily streamed down his face.

Although he hadn't spent much time with Liu Xiuzhen, she treated him like family.

At that moment, he hated himself for not calling Yi again because of that ridiculous pride.

Lin Lubai approached Xiang Yiyi and said, "I'm sorry, Yiyi."

Lu Sichen stood to the side, glaring at him with some resentment, while Xiang Yi said lightly, "It's nothing."

Lin Lubai wanted to say something, but seeing Xiang Yi's state, he didn't say anything more and knelt there with her.

Xiang Yi looked at him and said, "Thank you."

Lin Lubai panicked. Did this sentence mean that she wanted to sever ties with him?

“Yi Yi, I really didn’t mean to not answer the phone. There was no signal in the mountains, and then I lost my phone,” Lin Lubai explained.

"Hmm." Xiang Yi didn't continue the conversation.

Lin Lubai's heart raced even more, but this was not the time to explain, so he could only remain silent.

The next morning, the family bid farewell to the body.

Xiang Yi and her grandmother had no relatives, only a few employees in the store and some neighbors.

Liu Xiuzhen was a very kind person. She had good relationships with her neighbors and treated her employees very well, so when people heard the news of her passing, everyone came to see her off.

Xiao Zhao and the family doctor called some people to see Grandma off. Lin Lubai told Grandpa, and Grandpa sent a wreath.

The farewell ceremony was simple. Xiang Yiyi cried so hard that she collapsed to her seat, and Lin Lubai saw that she was about to fall down and immediately went to help her up.

The wound bled because Xiang Yiyi pressed on it, but Lin Lubai didn't care and hugged Xiang Yiyi.

When blood seeped through his white shirt, Xiao Zhao quickly called the family doctor.

The family doctor and Lin Lubai went to the car to treat the wound. Xiao Zhao followed, and when he was almost at the door, Lu Sichen grabbed him.

Lu Sichen asked Xiao Zhao in a low, calm voice, "What happened? Why is my brother bleeding from his chest?"

“It rained yesterday, and a worker fell off the construction site. Boss Lin tried to grab him, but it was too slippery and he couldn't get a grip. The two of them fell into the woods together. In trying to save the worker, he was impaled in the chest by a piece of wood. The wound is still bandaged. It must have reopened when he exerted force,” Xiao Zhao said simply.

At this moment, Lu Sichen realized that he had misunderstood Lin Lubai; the guy had been in trouble but hadn't told anyone.

Lu Sichen turned around and went to take care of Yi Yi.

When Lu Sichen came in and saw his younger brother and his wife standing so close together, he felt a little annoyed and pushed Lu Sichen aside.

“I’ll take care of him, you should rest first,” Lu Sichen said.

"No need, I can take care of my own wife," Lin Lubai replied.

"When did you find out about Grandma Yi's accident? Who told you?" Lin Lubai asked Lu Sichen.

“Two days ago, Grandma fell and was hospitalized, and then she was admitted to the ICU. Yi Yi was crying nonstop at the entrance of the emergency room, and Xiao Qing called me,” Lu Sichen said.

"Is this why you called Grandpa that day?" Lin Lubai asked.

“Yes, I could only ask my grandfather if I couldn’t find you. I waited all night for your call,” Lu Sichen replied.

Hearing Lu Sichen say this, he was filled with remorse. He realized that he had been too narrow-minded and petty, which almost made him miss his grandmother's funeral.

Lin Lubai's face darkened, and he stopped speaking.

"Let's have a proper talk after the funeral," Lu Sichen said.

Lin Lubai was a little confused and didn't know what he meant, but he also felt that running away wouldn't solve the problem, so he nodded.

The funeral was kept simple. Everyone saw Liu Xiuzhen off on her final journey. Xiang Yi's eyes were full of tears, but she didn't cry. When her grandmother was being buried, she wanted to go inside, but everyone held her back.

However, after the funeral, Xiang Yi fainted at the scene.

Lin Lubai quickly helped her into the car and told the driver to go to the hospital immediately. Lu Sichen then pinched her philtrum.

Seeing Lu Sichen's concern for Xiang Yiyi, Lin Lubai felt a little jealous.

When Xiang Yi woke up, her eyes were vacant.

Lu Sichen bought some porridge from the hospital for Xiang Yi to eat first, as she hadn't eaten anything all day.

Xiang Yi didn't speak or move. Lin Lubai held the spoon to her mouth, but she still didn't open her mouth.

"Yi Yi, you still have me. I will always be by your side," Lin Lubai said.

“Yes, Yi Yi, you still have me. Be strong,” Xiao Qing said.

However, these words had no effect on Xiang Yiyi. Xiao Qing tried to comfort her, but Xiang Yiyi remained unmoved.

"Yi Yi, Grandma is gone, but you still have your child. Do you still want your child?" Lu Sichen saw how anxious Xiang Yi Yi was.

"Child?" Lu Sichen's words made a glimmer of light flash in Xiang Yiyi's eyes.

"Yes, the child. Do you still want the child?" Lu Sichen provoked her again.

Xiang Yi took the porridge from Lin Lubai's hand and began to eat it in large mouthfuls.

Fortunately, she still cared about the child, and Lu Sichen breathed a sigh of relief.

Lin Lubai froze upon hearing the word "child".

A child? She already has a child? Could it be theirs? Lu Sichen's face was full of disbelief.

The sheets were clearly stained last time, so wasn't that her first time? But they've only been together a few times, and it's only been less than ten days since they got together, yet she's already pregnant.

Lin Lubai glanced at Lu Sichen, but Lu Sichen's heart was entirely focused on Xiang Yiyi.

Seeing that Xiang Yi had finished eating, Lu Sichen quickly handed her a tissue.

Perhaps what she needs more is Lu Sichen, Lin Lubai silently stepped aside to make way.
