Chapter 20 Wu Ma Becomes Suspicious About Missing Items at Home

After washing up in the room and changing into dry clothes, the two went downstairs hand in hand.

"Sir, Madam, please sit down and have breakfast," Aunt Wu greeted them with a smile as she set out the bowls and chopsticks.

"Thank you for your hard work, Aunt Wu. Please sit down and have some breakfast too." After sitting down, Zhang Yufang picked up her chopsticks, took a small steamed bun, and put it in her mouth. She couldn't help but exclaim, "Mmm, Aunt Wu's steamed buns are still the best!"

Ruan Wanfu picked up his chopsticks and took a bite. The meat juices were so delicious that he nodded and praised, "Aunt Wu's cooking is as good as ever."

"If you and your wife like it, please eat more!" Aunt Wu also sat down to eat breakfast with them.

Although Wu Ma was just a hired helper, she had been in this family for more than ten years, and the Ruan family had long regarded her as family.

"Sir, Madam, is there anything you'd like to eat for lunch today? I can make it for you," Aunt Wu asked happily. She hadn't been this happy in a long time. Before, her husband and wife didn't come back here very often, so she never had a chance to express herself.

Ruan Wanfu said gently, "Aunt Wu, you can do whatever you want, but remember to listen to the doctor and don't make us anything too oily. Try to keep it light."

"Okay, sure," Aunt Wu replied.

Suddenly, as if she had thought of something important, she looked up and asked Ruan Wanfu and Zhang Yufang with a puzzled expression, "Sir, Madam, something strange has happened in our family these past two days."

Upon hearing this, Ruan Wanfu and Zhang Yufang looked curious and asked in unison, "What happened?"

Wu Ma's expression was slightly strange as she replied softly, "Sir, Madam, these past few days, some things have been going missing from our house occasionally. Although they're not anything valuable, it's still quite strange."

Upon hearing this, Ruan Wanfu and Zhang Yufang's hearts jumped, but they still tried to remain calm and continued to ask, "Then what exactly is missing?"

"Hmm... nothing special, just some vegetables, noodles, and meat, but I'm not sure if I remembered it wrong." Aunt Wu was also completely confused and had no idea what was going on.

At this moment, Ruan Wanfu and Zhang Yufang hurriedly comforted her in unison, "Aunt Wu, you must have remembered it wrong!"

They silently prayed that Aunt Wu would stop asking questions, since this was probably because Mu Mu had come back and cooked something.

However, the couple's unanimous words only confused Wu's mother more. She felt that she was not yet old enough to be forgetful! Usually, she was alone at home, and she basically knew what they bought and what they ate.

But now the husband and wife are directly saying that she must have misremembered. Could it be that the husband and wife have been secretly eating behind her back but refuse to admit it? But that doesn't make sense. This is their home. Even if they really ate it, there seems to be no need to deny it, right? So, could it be that they know something inside?

As Wu Ma pondered this matter, somewhat bewildered, she muttered to herself, "I guess I really must have remembered it wrong!"

"Aunt Wu, what are you thinking about?" Zhang Yufang asked, raising her voice.

"Ah? Madam, I...I wasn't thinking anything, I really wasn't thinking anything," Wu Ma replied hastily, as if suddenly awakened.

How could she dare to say that she suspected her house was haunted? Especially not in front of the homeowner! She absolutely couldn't bring herself to say it.

“Aunt Wu, how about we take turns cooking from now on? After all, we’re going to be living here long-term, and if I have nothing to do every day, I’ll really get bored,” Zhang Yufang suggested earnestly.

In fact, Zhang Yufang's real thought was that she should take charge of cooking so that if something was suddenly missing at home, she could find an excuse to get away with it.

“Madam, cooking has always been my job…” Wu Ma responded softly.

“Then it’s decided, Aunt Wu. Let her give it a try. Otherwise, she’ll just be idle all day and overthink things. The doctor also suggested that she find something to do to pass the time and distract herself,” Ruan Wanfu chimed in.

After careful consideration, Aunt Wu realized that what he said made sense. The lady had just lost her beloved daughter, and now that she was finally seeing her smile again and showing interest in something, keeping her busy might reduce her grief.

So, Wu Ma said in a coaxing tone, "Alright, alright, Madam, you can do whatever you want! But let me make it clear beforehand, Madam, you can only ask for one meal a day at most, no more."

When Ruan Wanfu and Zhang Yufang heard that Wu Ma had agreed, they exchanged a glance and thought: This way, Wu Ma's doubts can be dispelled in the future.
