Chapter 3 I'm out of prison now, I'm free.
In the kitchen, Aunt Wang busied herself preparing Huo Muchen's dinner. She skillfully chopped the vegetables, each movement so natural and fluid. Yet, she couldn't forget the frail girl in her heart.
Aunt Wang kept glancing towards the living room, her heart filled with doubt and worry. She didn't know the girl's background, nor why the young master had sent her to work at their house. All she knew was that the girl looked so frail, as if a gust of wind could blow her over.
Aunt Wang sighed softly. She understood that, no matter what, she should do her best to take care of the girl and make her life in the Huo family more stable.
Liu Shiyin stood before Huo Muchen, her head slightly lowered, unable to meet his deep gaze. Her voice trembled, as if she were desperately suppressing her inner fear and unease:
“Mr. Huo, why are you doing this to me? My mistakes have been punished, I am out of prison now, I am free.”
Huo Muchen looked at her, his brows furrowed slightly, his voice cold and firm:
“Liu Shiyin, you hit Qin Xiang with your car, that’s an undeniable fact. You went to jail for it, that’s the price you have to pay. However, you may not know why your original one-year sentence was extended to three years. And do you really think you can get out of jail on time? If I hadn’t intervened, your release date would be five years from today.”
Upon hearing Huo Muchen's words, Liu Shiyin's face turned deathly pale. She recalled the scene when the mysterious woman found her, the woman confidently stating that her sentence was only one year and promising to find a way to reduce it, bailing her out in less than six months.
As her six-month term drew to a close, she was filled with anticipation and excitement, thinking that she could finally end her long prison sentence. However, fate played another cruel joke on her.
During a meal, a fellow inmate deliberately picked a fight, and the two got into an argument. In the chaos, the inmate hit his head on the corner of the table, sustaining a serious injury. Liu Shiyin was utterly shocked; she hadn't laid a hand on him, yet she was charged with assault because of this unexpected altercation. As a result, her sentence was extended by another three years.
Liu Shiyin was filled with injustice and helplessness. Since entering prison, she had been bullied every day, but she had never bullied anyone else.
Her personality and upbringing meant that she would never raise her voice, let alone argue with others, from childhood to adulthood. Yet now, she has been deprived of her freedom once again because of this trumped-up charge.
Huo Muchen looked at Liu Shiyin, whose face was pale, and continued speaking.
“You are working for me now, which is both repaying this kindness and paying the price for your past mistakes. I saved you and gave you a chance to start over, which you should cherish.”
Liu Shiyin raised her head, a hint of struggle flashing in her eyes:
“Mr. Huo, I understand what you mean. But I’m really worried about my mother. She’s all alone in the hospital with no one to take care of her. Can I go see her first? I promise I’ll come back to work after I’ve seen her.”
Huo Muchen looked at the pleading and worry in her eyes and remained silent for a while. He understood that although Liu Shiyin had made a mistake, her concern for her mother was genuine.
“Alright, I can let you visit your mother. But remember, you are now my servant and must obey my rules. Return immediately after you have visited your mother. Do not attempt to escape or delay. Otherwise, I will not hesitate to send you back to prison to continue your unfinished five-year sentence.”
After hearing Huo Muchen's words, Liu Shiyin trembled slightly. She understood the gravity of the situation and knew that the world of the wealthy was cruel and ruthless, where power was paramount and she was powerless to fight against it.
A wave of fear washed over her as she recalled the dark days she had spent in prison. But she quickly composed herself and nodded in agreement.
"Okay, I understand. I will strictly follow your rules and come back immediately after visiting my mother."
After saying that, Liu Shiyin turned and quickly left the room. Her heart was filled with longing and worry for her mother, but she also understood that she had to abide by Huo Muchen's rules in order to have a chance to start over.
She took a deep breath and set off for the hospital, hoping to see her mother as soon as possible and bring her some comfort and warmth.
