Rebirth to Save Myself
Chapter 8: Skipping a Grade
Su Xia first took out the bowl and handed it to her grandmother, saying, "The bowl is broken, this is a new one."
Grandma mistakenly thought Su Xia's bowl was newly bought, and her face immediately darkened. She asked, "Where did you get the money? You're so young, and you've already learned to steal money. You're not learning anything good."
He was about to hit Su Xia when she quickly dodged and explained, "It was a boy in my class who broke it, and his mother gave me this bowl as compensation."
Then Su Xia briefly explained that she had come to the grandmother's house to ask for compensation, which made her very angry. She scolded, "How can you be so shameless? Coming to the grandmother's house to ask for compensation? Do you think you're a beggar? You're making a scene over a broken bowl. Are you trying to embarrass me to death? You're really making me so angry. You're not allowed to eat lunch. You should reflect on your actions."
Su Xia was helpless, but she could only leave the kitchen and go upstairs to her room. Her stomach was growling loudly, but at this moment she had neither money nor means, so what could she possibly eat? She could only lie in bed and try to reduce her physical activity to see if she could digest less energy.
When she went to class in the afternoon, as expected, those boys didn't dare to bother her anymore. They had all heard about Su Xia coming to her door at noon and were afraid they'd be next. Although they were very bold in bullying Su Xia at school, they chickened out when their parents were involved. This was exactly the effect Su Xia wanted; she didn't want to waste her time on these trivial matters. If nothing unexpected happened, her parents would have her grandmother take her to the provincial capital for the summer vacation, and when they came back, she would skip to the senior class and not be in the same class as those boys anymore.
Sure enough, just before summer vacation, Mom called and asked Grandma to take her to the provincial capital. Grandma didn't really want to go, but then Auntie brought good news: Uncle wanted Grandma to go to the provincial capital to take care of Auntie. Grandma was overjoyed. Uncle was the youngest son in the family and the only one who graduated from high school. Plus, Auntie was pregnant, so Grandma was determined to go and take care of her without hesitation.
She spent a less-than-ideal summer vacation with her parents because her mother had to take care of Su Yue and her father went to work, so she hardly went out to play at all. She had to stay home and help her mother with chores. In her mother's words, "As the older sister, of course you have to take care of your younger sister."
Perhaps because their previous child had died young, Su Yue's parents kept her even though she was a girl. She hadn't understood why before, but now she probably did.
After summer vacation, her mother felt that she was taller than her peers and that attending the middle class would be a waste of her time. So she asked her aunt, who was a kindergarten teacher at the time, to help her transfer her to the senior class. In this way, she successfully escaped being a little kid in the middle class.
"What happened to me during my year in kindergarten?" Su Xia slowly recalled, and it seemed that there were indeed two very important things.
The first thing was that after my aunt came back to give birth, she stayed at home. That year, a bamboo mat shop opened near our house, and my grandmother went to make bamboo mats. When business was booming, my grandmother would even work overtime, so she arranged for my aunt to sleep with her. But at that time, the toilet was a public toilet across the street. Late at night, she needed to use the toilet, but the hallway and stairs in our house were pitch black. She was too young and too scared to go. My aunt had to take care of my cousin and didn't want to go with her, so in the end, she soiled her pants.
Thinking about this, Su Xia couldn't help but facepalm. This was truly a dark history!
The second thing was that because all the other children had pocket money to buy snacks, and her grandma didn't give her any, she stole one yuan from the teacher's bag when the teacher wasn't looking. However, she was quickly discovered, and the teacher came to her house to reprimand her. When her grandma found out, she wasn't kind to her either, and immediately told her parents.
"Sigh, I really don't know what I was thinking back then, doing something like that. But thankfully there's still a chance to make amends. Although it can't be perfect, at least we can avoid making mistakes."
Soon, her grandmother, who often had to work overtime, wanted her to sleep with her aunt. She refused outright, saying she could sleep alone in her parents' room.
"Aren't you afraid to sleep alone, you're just a little kid?" Although the aunt was unwilling, she still pretended to be concerned.
"It's okay, I'm not afraid. My aunt is already very tired from taking care of my younger brother. I can't be a burden. I can manage on my own." After saying this, Su Xia felt that her explanation was perfect and couldn't help but give herself a thumbs up.
"You silly child, don't talk about trouble or anything. We're all family," the aunt said hurriedly, afraid that others would misunderstand that she didn't like her second uncle's child.
"Just let her be. She's very opinionated." Unlike her second aunt, who had just returned and was unaware of Su Xia's changes, Grandma had witnessed Su Xia's transformation over the past two years. Therefore, she decided that Su Xia should sleep in her own room, and only call her aunt if necessary. After all, her aunt's room was separated from hers by only a wooden board; any slight movement would be easily noticed.
Seeing that her mother-in-law had already said that, the aunt didn't insist any further. She was already a little resentful that her own child was still young and that her mother-in-law was at work and not helping to take care of the baby. Then, her mother-in-law even asked her to look after her second uncle's child. Luckily, the child was smart enough to refuse, otherwise she really would have lost her temper.
As a result, Su Xia slept alone in her own room. When she needed to use the toilet at night, she would carefully take toilet paper downstairs to the public restroom, thus avoiding the embarrassing situation of soiling her pants as before.
The other thing is even simpler: as long as I don't steal money, this won't happen. Besides, I can buy as many snacks as I want when I earn money later, so why be greedy for this fleeting pleasure?
I didn't study hard before, and barely made it into high school. I got a low score and went to a junior college, where I studied a major I didn't like. After graduation, I found a job that wasn't related to my major. I drifted along aimlessly, not knowing what I liked, just going to get off work and coming home day after day, earning money.
This time, I need to carefully plan what I should learn and what I want, then make a plan to implement it, and give myself a different life experience.
"I like writing novels. I can write them down first, and then upload them to the website when I have a computer. Maybe I can even earn some royalties. I want to go to at least a second-tier university to experience a different kind of university life and see if people with higher education are different from those with associate degrees. I also want to travel. I had originally planned to go to the capital of Hunan Province with Su Yue to see the popular tourist cities and try some local delicacies." Su Xia happily wrote down her goals and wishes, and then planned what efforts she would need to make to achieve them.
