Beast Taming Star Journey
Chapter 289 Investigating the Traitor's Trail
I hurried along the dimly lit alley. The Iridium Beastmaster's mansion stood silently in the night, like a lurking beast. A cold wind blew, swirling up a few fallen leaves, making a rustling sound that added to the eeriness. I recalled my brief encounters with the Iridium Beastmaster; he had always been evasive, his eyes darting around, especially when the topic of the Gold Beastmaster came up, he became unusually nervous. My unease grew stronger; my intuition told me that the Iridium Beastmaster was definitely involved in this matter.
Su Yao was still buying me time, but I had to hurry. I took a deep breath and released Little Gray—my earliest companion, a pure gray spirit cat. Little Gray was small and agile, and most importantly, it possessed the talent to conceal its presence. I gently stroked its fur and whispered, "Little Gray, it's up to you now."
Little Gray nodded, nimbly darted away, and disappeared into the night. I followed closely behind, relying on the telepathic connection with Little Gray to evade the patrolling guards and silently infiltrate the Beastmaster's mansion.
The mansion was brightly lit, yet eerily quiet, with a faint smell of blood in the air that sent chills down my spine. I cautiously moved through the corridors, searching for any clues. The Beastmaster's study was located deep within the mansion, heavily guarded, but for Little Grey, these defenses were practically nonexistent.
With Little Grey's help, I successfully entered the study. The study was filled with various books and scrolls, and the air was filled with the scent of ink. I carefully examined each book and scroll, hoping to find some useful clues.
Time ticked by, and my heart sank heavier with each passing second. Just as I was about to give up, I noticed a hidden compartment on the bookshelf. I gently pushed it open, and the compartment slowly opened, revealing a stack of letters inside.
I picked up the letter and examined it carefully in the dim light. The contents shocked me! The letter mentioned a mysterious organization and a conspiracy against the Golden Beastmasters, and the name of the Iridium Beastmaster appeared prominently in the letter!
I quickly skimmed through the letter, memorizing the key information. Suddenly, I heard hurried footsteps approaching! Oh no, it's the Beastmaster Iridium! He's back!
I quickly put the letter back where it belonged and closed the hidden compartment. Little Gray sensed the danger and rushed back to my side. I held my breath, hiding behind the bookshelf, my heart pounding so hard it felt like it would jump out of my throat.
"Damn it!" The Beastmaster's voice rang out from outside the study, "I clearly felt someone come in..."
The Beastmaster suddenly pushed open the study door, and I could almost feel his sharp gaze sweeping across the bookshelf. I pressed myself tightly against the bookshelf, afraid to make a sound. Little Gray was also curled up in my arms, motionless.
“Strange…” Yi Beast Tamer paced back and forth in the study, his brows furrowed. “I clearly felt someone come in. Was it just my imagination?” He walked to the desk, picked up a book, flipped through it, and then put it down, seemingly deep in thought.
My heart pounded faster and faster, like a drumbeat; I could even feel my blood surging through my veins. I was terrified of being discovered, and even more terrified of losing this opportunity. Without conclusive evidence, the true face of the Iridium Beastmaster could not be revealed, and the injustice done to the Gold Beastmaster would remain unaddressed.
Just when I was about to give up, Su Yao's voice suddenly rang in my mind: "Nong Yu, calm down! Believe in yourself, you can do it!"
Su Yao's voice was like a clear spring, flowing through my anxious heart and instantly calming me down. Yes, I can't give up; I must persevere!
The Beastmaster seemed not to have noticed anything amiss. He sighed, turned, and left the study. Only then did I dare to breathe a sigh of relief, feeling my back soaked with cold sweat.
I gently patted Little Grey's head and whispered, "Thank you, Little Grey."
Little Grey rubbed against my hand, as if to comfort me.
I rallied my spirits and continued my search for clues in the study. I couldn't overlook any corner or detail. I carefully examined every book, every scroll, and even the floor and walls.
Time ticked by, and my heart sank heavier with each passing second. The Beastmaster could return at any moment; I had to hurry.
Suddenly, my gaze fell upon an ink cartridge on the desk. It looked ordinary, but something about it felt off. I picked it up and examined it closely.
There is a small protrusion on the bottom of the ink cartridge. When I press it gently, the bottom of the ink cartridge pops open, revealing a hidden compartment!
My heart suddenly raced. Could this be the key evidence I've been searching for?
I carefully opened the hidden compartment, inside which lay a folded note. Unfolding it, in the dim light, a line of text caught my eye:
"Tomorrow at noon, in the ruins outside the city..."
My pupils constricted sharply. What did this mean? Could it be...?
Suddenly, I heard footsteps outside the door, getting closer and clearer...
"Who is it?!" The furious voice of the Beastmaster Yi rang out from outside the door.
