Rebirth: I Became a Maggot 2

Chapter 52 Crying Like a Child

I was grieving the daifuku that had been eaten by the sparrow while trying to save me, and I was feeling extremely sad. But when I looked up, I saw that the sparrow that had already left was actually flying back towards me.

I was so scared I almost jumped out of my skin. Seriously? This sparrow is so insatiable! It ate one and then came back for two more?

Seeing the sparrow fly back, I flew forward almost without hesitation. I don't want to die yet. Not only do I not want to die, I must live well.

I don't care about anything anymore, I don't consider anything. All I can do now is fly like crazy, fly forward like crazy.

All I wanted was to escape, which would only cost me my life. But how could I possibly outfly that sparrow? Its wings were many times larger than mine, and its strength was many times greater.

Before long, the sparrow flew above me, and I could even feel its shadow enveloping me.

Seeing that shadow, I knew the sparrow had caught up. My heart sank instantly. How could it possibly fly? This was like trying to outrun an imported Land Rover with a domestically made Volkswagen Golf!

This is absolutely suicidal. I'm courting death right now, but I don't have a way to avoid it. I'm almost crying with desperation.

Why am I so unlucky?

The sparrow's shadow had completely enveloped me; if it swooped down on me, I would become its dinner.

But the sparrow I expected didn't attack. Instead, it flew quickly forward, passing right over me and disappearing into the distance in the blink of an eye.

I was extremely surprised. What does this mean? Are you kidding me?

Just then, a few mischievous kids ran up from behind.

"Damn it, I told you to run faster! You're so slow, the bird must have gotten away!" one of the kids, who seemed to be the leader of the group, shouted angrily.

"I want to run faster too, but my legs are too short," the child said, sounding very aggrieved.

"You're so stupid, I'm not playing with you next time." After saying that, the leader of the children left with the other children.

The child who was scolded stood there blankly and began to cry silently, as if he had suffered a great injustice.

But after a while, the ringleader of the kids came back: "Okay, stop crying, or Mom will say I bullied you again."

"Waaah." The child hadn't been crying at first, but now that the leader of the children had come to comfort him, he actually started crying.

"Alright, alright, I give up. Let's go, I'll take you to catch butterflies. Okay?" the leader of the children said, quite annoyed.

"Yes, yes, brother is the best," the child said happily.

"What a hassle, it's such a hassle to play with a girl all day long, let's go." The leader of the children said unhappily.

It wasn't until I heard the leader of the children say that I realized the child really was a girl. I wondered how she could be so pretty; it turns out she was a girl.

In the countryside, people are too lazy to comb their hair every day, and since they are still young, they simply shaved their heads.

Seeing this reminded me of my own younger brother. How is he doing now? Is he settling into school? Is anyone bullying him?

I wonder if he has a girlfriend yet? I've been gone for so long without calling home, I wonder if my family is worried about me?

As I watched the older brother lead his younger sister out of my sight, I suddenly thought of my family. Where are my family now?

"Twenty-two cents." Just as my thoughts were drifting back to my family, someone suddenly called my name.

I quickly looked around, but I didn't see anything. Not only did I not see anything, I didn't even see a ghost.

"Who?" I called out nervously, I was really scared. Could it be a ghost in broad daylight?

"Twenty-two cents, hahaha." Dafu suddenly rushed in front of me, his big, round face right in front of my eyes.

"A ghost!" I was so scared I almost fell off the plane.

"It's me, 12 cents!" Dafu cried out, sounding very aggrieved.

"You? You're not dead?" I exclaimed in fear. Could it be? Is it really haunted in broad daylight?

Haven't you ever heard of flies being ghosts?

“I didn’t die. Those children saved me. Just when I was about to be caught by the sparrow, those children suddenly appeared, shouting that they wanted to catch the little bird, so I survived,” Dafu explained to me.

"You're really not dead?" I asked cautiously. I'm not afraid of anything except ghosts, and I have to admit I'm a bit ashamed of myself.

"You're really not dead. If you were dead, would I still be talking to you?" Da Fu said, quite displeased.

That makes sense, though. It seems like flies don't know anything about ghosts and gods. I guess I'm just overthinking it.

"It's good that you're not dead, it's good that you're alright." I said, feeling utterly exhausted, wiping the cold sweat that probably wasn't even on my forehead. I had experienced so much today, I was still terrified.

"What's wrong with you? Aren't you happy that I'm alive? Look how scared you are," Dafu said unhappily.

Can I say I'm afraid of her because I'm afraid she's a ghost? Of course not, besides, she probably doesn't even know that ghosts exist.

So I had to explain, "What just happened was really dramatic, so I haven't quite processed it yet. Anyway, it's great that you're alive."

Knowing that Dafu was alive lessened my guilt considerably, and I was truly moved when Dafu rushed out just now. It was so touching, and I was so grateful.

“It’s so good that you’re back and alright. It’s been too dangerous for you to stay with me. How about we part ways here? I’ll go find the person I’m looking for, and you can go find your food.” I suggested to Dafu. After all, I was going to leave this place, and I might even be going to another province. Dafu, on the other hand, might not have even left this village. It wouldn’t be right for him to stay with me.

"Did Dafu do something wrong?" Dafu asked, feeling very aggrieved.

“You haven’t done anything wrong, but it’s too dangerous for you to stay with me, so you should go back to your own life,” I had no choice but to suggest.

“But I want to stay by your side and help you,” Dafu said.

"Stay by my side? To help me get to my death?" I said, my tone somewhat forceful.

"But I just want to stay by your side, otherwise where can I go?" Dafu said, feeling very aggrieved.

She started crying as she spoke, looking extremely sad. Seeing Dafu crying reminded me of the little human girl from earlier.

When the little girl was sad or wronged, she had her brother to protect her, but Dafu in front of her had nothing. Even the maggots in the same pit as him were all dead. He was truly all alone.

Looking at the crying Dafu in front of me, I felt like there were two overlapping shadows in the air. One was the human child who had been crying earlier, and the other was the Dafu in front of me.

Suddenly I realized how similar they were...
