Rebirth: I Became a Maggot 2

Chapter 38 Strange Poison

Led by those ants, I was exhausted and about to give up when I finally arrived at that damned warehouse.

Looking at that huge warehouse door, I figured there must be something useful inside. I just hoped it wouldn't disappoint me too much.

Although I'm exhausted, the red ants are already at the gates, and I have to race against time. Who knows when they'll attack?

It's said that wars in the animal kingdom are utterly irrational; they just start fighting whenever they want without ever consulting with diplomats.

Forget it, I'll stop thinking about it. I'll just see what's inside. I just hope there's something useful in there.

As the ant that led us there opened the door, the contents were finally revealed to us, but to my surprise, what was inside was truly astonishing.

It's not that the stuff inside is too good, nor is it that the stuff inside is too bad; it's just that none of the stuff inside has been found to be useful in the current war.

Inside the door was a dazzling array of food: corn, peanuts, popcorn, Wrigley's gum, xylitol, and even small pieces of meat and dried fish—all kinds of food.

These foods are undoubtedly good for ants, but they are the ultimate goal of war. I looked into the warehouse and there was basically nothing there except food; there was nothing suitable for fighting.

Even with my high level of intelligence, I couldn't think of a way to use this food to repel the red ants that were about to attack.

Looking at this food, I almost cried. I want food to sustain us and keep swarming with flies, but it is also this food that has brought us war. I really don't know if this food is good or bad.

"Yi Mao Er, what's wrong?" I was feeling very frustrated and didn't know how to face the upcoming battle. Da Fu, who was next to me, asked anxiously, probably because he could tell that I was in a bad mood.

"It's nothing, we don't have what we need here," I said, quite frustrated.

There's nothing here. Even finding some stones would be helpful. Throwing small stones down when the red ants attack would be a good idea, but this warehouse has nothing but food.

"What should we do? The enemy is about to attack, what should we do?" Dafu asked anxiously.

"How should I know? You're asking me? Who am I supposed to ask?" I exclaimed in frustration. They really think I'm a god. I'm just an ordinary person. How am I supposed to know what to do? I've never fought an ant before, and there's nothing here. How are we supposed to fight?

After I yelled at Dafu, she stopped talking and just sat there obediently, like a wronged little girl.

I'm really annoyed now. What should I do? There's food all over here, and people are just here to steal it. Are we going to be safe if we just give them the food?

They stole our food and now they're taking our territory? We can't give them the food, otherwise how will we survive? If we just give them food without a fight, they'll be too easy to bully.

So giving food is definitely not an option; the question then becomes how to protect the place and the food.

I was at my wit's end, lying there not knowing what to do.

The atmosphere was unusually awkward; no one spoke, and even I, as their temporary leader, was angry, so a profound silence fell over the area.

"Why does all this food smell so good? Aren't you eating any of it?" a soldier asked in a low voice, quite curious.

"These... those rice grains are too hard, so they usually need to be soaked in water before eating. As for the old corn, it also needs to be soaked in water before eating because it's easy to store and can be kept for a long time, so they're all here," the ant that led us there explained.

"What about those? What are those things? They smell so good, why don't you guys eat them?" the soldier asked, pointing to the xylitol and chewing gum.

"That stuff? It's xylitol and chewing gum," said the ant that brought us there.

"How did you get these? And so many of them?" the soldier asked, puzzled.

"It was a coincidence," the ant that led the way explained. "Last time, some kids were setting off firecrackers nearby, and some of them fell off while they were running around, so we picked them up."

"No wonder! I was wondering why we'd never seen that before. Oh, I see. It must taste delicious. It smells so good," the soldier said longingly.

"Delicious? Impossible! It's practically poison. It just smells good, but you can't eat it. Whoever eats it will lose their voice." The ant that led us here said in a panic, as if it had remembered some terrifying scene it shouldn't have.

"What's going on? How can something that smells so good be poisonous? My nose can tell if something is poisonous, you know." The soldier clearly didn't believe it. How could xylitol be poisonous?

"When we first brought it back, we thought it was non-toxic. It tasted very sweet when we ate it. But just as we were about to swallow it, we realized that this thing would get stuck in your throat, making you extremely uncomfortable. Not only could you not speak, but even eating became a problem." The ant that led us here became extremely excited as he spoke, as if he were recalling the scene. His voice was trembling.

"Is...is it really that serious?" The soldier was clearly shocked. He never expected that the chewing gum that smelled so delicious and sweet could actually be such a poison.

"Okay, that's it! I've got a plan!" I jumped up excitedly after hearing their conversation.

Why didn't I think of chewing gum and xylitol? I never thought of these two things! I have so many uses for them.

Upon hearing my voice, the three of them simultaneously turned to look at me. Just a moment ago they looked like they were about to die, how did they suddenly come up with a solution?

"What's your idea?" the soldier asked excitedly.

"You're not thinking of using this poison to kill those red ants, are you? Let me tell you, that's impossible. Unless you force-feed them, they won't eat it. This method definitely won't work," the ant that led us there quickly said.

"My idea is to use the chewing gum and xylitol, but not to feed them; I'll make super glue," I said proudly. How could I be so clever? I actually came up with such a great idea.

"What do you mean?" The three of them asked this question almost simultaneously.

After asking that question, the three of them exchanged strange glances, then turned their attention back to me, all wanting an answer from me. What did this mean? What is super glue?

"Well, keep this a secret for now. Just do as I say inside. Now, call the ants over and have them carry away all the xylitol and chewing gum. Then go find a lot of water." I ordered the two ants below.

Although they didn't know what I was going to do, the two queen ants giving me the same command couldn't be fake. So, upon hearing my command, the two ants immediately went down to find other ants to help carry the load.

As for what I'm going to do, I guarantee it will surprise everyone. Thinking of this, I smiled smugly.
