Chapter 30: Wandering Along the Way

The files on the computer were sent one by one, all with abbreviated names and all related to Ling Shu.

Pei Du received the file, which contained a densely packed record of Ling Shu's experiences from birth to the present.

Pei Du wanted to find two photos of Ling Shu to look at, but after flipping through more than ten pages, he only found one photo of Ling Shu as a child.

It was cut out from the school's graduation photo.

Ling Shu was wearing the school uniform, a blue collar and white shirt, with a thin face. His eyes were quite large, with amber pupils. He looked at the camera expressionlessly, his lips a light red, forming a relaxed straight line.

Judging by his appearance alone, he wasn't as terrifying as An Jia had described.

Pei Du looked down at Ling Shu's specific information. As An Jia had said, Ling Shu was born in a small mountain village in City A, a remote place where there was also a lot of prostitution.

Ling Shu's biological father is unknown, and his mother died from a virus when he was young. After that, Ling Shu lived alone.

Pei Du compared information from several sources before finally determining the name of the village where Ling Shu lived.

Xianghe Village. It is also called "Lingjia Village" because almost all the people living there have the surname "Ling".

Unsurprisingly, Ling Yu was also born and raised there.

Pei Du had read Ling Shu's information in the document. Although Ling Shu's upbringing was not good, his grades were quite good, and he even won provincial awards several times.

"After graduating from junior high school, Ling Shu was admitted to a prestigious high school in City A with a score among the top three in the city. On the day of enrollment, the chairman of Shengshi Group was involved in a car accident on his way to school. Ling Shu happened to pass by and took him to the hospital for treatment. Later, he coincidentally discovered that Ling Shu was the chairman's illegitimate son who had been living away from home..."

Pei Du's gaze froze.

"...The chairman was overjoyed to see Ling Shu and took him back to the family to raise him. Ling Shu was fifteen years old that year. After returning to the family, he changed his surname back to Sheng and his full name was Sheng Shixian."

Pei Du: "..."

He said that An Jia's book never mentioned Sheng Shixian's name. An Jia would occasionally mention Pei Du, but the male protagonist Sheng Shixian seemed to have vanished into thin air, with no content related to him at all.

It turns out that Ling Shu is Sheng Shixian; he changed his name once.

Pei Du recalled the times when Sheng Shixian and An Jia were together, and he was even more speechless. He originally thought that Sheng Shixian was pursuing An Jia, but he didn't expect that Sheng Shixian was indirectly threatening An Jia.

In the book, An Jia says that she accidentally saw Sheng Shixian's tail, which exposed Sheng Shixian's identity as a mutant, and thus he harbored murderous intentions towards An Jia.

But didn't Sheng Shixian just grow ears? And he still has a tail hiding?

Pei Du pulled up the surveillance footage from downstairs, and Sheng Shixian had already returned to the sofa and was lying down. She was wrapped in the same blanket as before, curled up inside, and closed her eyes, drifting off to sleep.

Pei Du zoomed in on Sheng Shixian's face. The beast ears on Sheng Shixian's head were indeed newly grown, and their size, shape, and color were all very immature, without any strange features.

Pei Du had some doubts. Sheng Shixian had grown a tail after being infected with the virus as a child, but he learned to control its shape and hid it as he grew up.

Later, he was injected with blood containing virus number 89 and became infected a second time, causing Sheng Shixian to mutate further and grow animal ears.

Pei Du's expression was subtle. He stared at Sheng Shixian's face on the monitor for a few seconds before shifting his gaze back to the black book.

Ling Shu is a heartless person; he doesn't love anyone.

He only loves the dog he owns.

"The city center of City A is very different from the mountain villages; the surveillance here is much stricter. I heard that a mutant was killed just a few days ago, and the body hasn't been taken away yet..."

"You know what, things are getting more and more chaotic now. We can't just kill all these mutants, who knows, we might get infected one of us someday."

"What can we do? If they don't die, we'll die. These mutants have no humanity. Do you want to be bitten to death by them?"

"What if I grow those weird things? I'd rather die, that would be so disgusting!"

Sheng Shixian often heard such words.

When he first arrived in downtown A, he was immediately struck by its bustling prosperity. Crowds thronged, and neon lights illuminated the figures of different people. Jewels and precious stones adorned the streets, all symbolizing wealth and luxury.

Despite its magnificent appearance, Sheng Shixian had little time to appreciate it. He knew that from the moment he stepped into this place, countless gun barrels had been pointed at his head.

He is also a mutant; he dares not reveal himself, nor can he reveal himself.

Sheng Shixian would occasionally hide in deserted alleys. Whenever he couldn't control his tail from moving, he would retreat there and secretly listen to the sounds outside.

The sky was always overcast, with no light, and raindrops would even drip from it without warning.

Sheng Shixian squatted on the ground, bored, watching the raindrops fall from the sky into the puddles, creating faint ripples. The expanding circles distorted his reflection in the water.

"What's today's homework? I didn't write it down, Pei Du. Did you write it down? Let me borrow it tomorrow..."

Sheng Shixian was indifferent to what was happening outside. He listened to the voices outside, his long, black, and agile tail exposed, occasionally dipping into the ground to collect a few drops of water.

"Let me see. Which way are you going? You're not going back this way, are you?" Sheng Shixian suddenly felt a sharp pain on his tail. He was startled and quickly pulled his tail back, cautiously retreating into the alley.

The commotion outside startled the people in the alley. Sheng Shixian gripped the end of his tail tightly, pressed one hand against the wall beside him, and crouched down to look out, already in a ready-to-attack stance should he be exposed.

Pei Du had just finished school. His school uniform was a rather unremarkable gray with two blue stripes on the side, making him look both dejected and ugly.

"Pei Du, what's wrong? What's inside?"

Sheng Shixian's breathing became heavy. He stared intently at Pei Du's throat, revealing his sharp teeth in a threatening manner.

Pei Du had a fair complexion, and although his features had not yet fully developed, his voice already possessed a calm and mature tone.

He didn't look at Sheng Shixian again, turned around and pulled the classmate next to him to continue walking forward.

"It's nothing, it's just a cat."

The footsteps faded into the distance, and speeding cars splashed water everywhere in the puddles. Horns blared intermittently as people tried to avoid them. Sheng Shixian stood in the alley, listening intently to the sounds outside. It was just like any other ordinary, uneventful day.

Sheng Shixian's tense nerves relaxed, and he let go, pressing his fluffy tail against his face.

The stinging sensation from being stepped on remained, and the burning and pain gradually subsided over time.

"I'm not a cat."

Sheng Shixian frowned. He subconsciously wanted to bite something to vent his anger, but his mouth was stretched open and he couldn't close it. In the end, he opened his eyes amidst waves of muscle soreness.
