Mercenaries in Two Worlds

Chapter 22 An unexpected encounter with an adorable, silly gray rock rat

“Waaah, Zhuangjian, Siwo…” When the humanoid monster saw Zhang Qian rushing up at it without any reason, it was so frightened that it lost its soul. It frantically waved its hands and begged for mercy, retreating continuously, its flesh trembling uncontrollably.

"Hmm? This monster can talk." Zhang Qian's broadsword stopped just above the monster's head with a gust of wind. He took a step back and held the sword horizontally in front of his chest warily.

The monster kept whimpering, its eyes filled with tears as it looked at Zhang Qian, gesturing incessantly.

The ugly monster displayed a wronged posture, which made Zhang Qian feel nauseous. However, the more he looked at the monster, the more familiar it seemed. He tentatively called out, "Brother Wang?"

Upon hearing Zhang Qian call him Brother Wang, the humanoid monster trembled with excitement, nodding repeatedly, tears streaming from its swollen eyes. For some reason, despite only being at the fifth level of Qi Refining, Zhang Qian exuded an aura comparable to those of a Qi Refining Perfection expert he had ever seen. Wang Er, venomed by bee poison and locked onto by Zhang Qian's aura, was unable to escape and was nearly scared to death.

"Oh my, it really is you, Brother Wang." Zhang Qian could still vaguely recognize Wang Er from the monster's remaining clothes, but his figure and appearance had completely changed, looking like a monster made of fat.

Wang Er finally found his people and was so excited he kept whimpering.

After a series of gestures, Zhang Qian still looked at him with a confused expression. He was so excited that he almost jumped up and down, but unfortunately, he was so swollen that he couldn't even jump.

Unfortunately, Zhang Qian didn't understand what Wang Er was saying at all, and muttered aggrievedly, "I understand animal language, but you're speaking the language of the monster world, how would I know?"

Wang Er looked up at the sky with tears in his eyes. He was already so disabled, and Zhang Qian was still making fun of him. Did he not want to live anymore?

Seeing Wang Er gesturing incessantly, Zhang Qian said sullenly, "Can't you just write it down...?"

Not only was his appearance mocked, but his intelligence was also ridiculed. Wang Er was filled with resentment.

With difficulty, he bent down and wrote three words with a twig: "Lianyecao" (meaning "Lianye Grass").

"Lysimachia... what lysimachia? Oh, I know, haha, I remember now, lysimachia is used to treat bee venom."

Zhang Qian finally understood, and Wang Er excitedly let out another round of shouts.

"But I don't know what a leaf grass looks like." The next sentence instantly dashed Wang Er's hopes.

Wang Er was internally devastated. "What kind of karma have I created? Without the Lianye Grass, this bee venom will take at least three days to dissipate. During that time, I'll either be eaten by wild beasts or killed by some idiot cultivator like Zhang Qian."

Zhang Qian grinned, "Just kidding, look what this is." In his hand was a small green plant with tender green stems and two round leaves at the top that joined together at the bottom, forming a peculiar circle.

Wang Er's emotions were like a rollercoaster. When he saw Lian Yecao, he was as excited as if he had seen his own mother. He snatched it away and stuffed it into his mouth without even washing it.

Zhang Qian enjoyed reading in his mercenary group, so he knew a bit about medicine. He knew that the main antidote for bee venom on the Tianxing Continent was Lianye Grass, which was effective against most bee venoms and was an essential item for home and travel. That's why he was looking for Lianye Grass after finding his way back.

This herb is abundant in Ghost Leaf Forest, but aside from relieving bee venom, it has no other use and is not even eaten by animals.

Half an hour later, Wang Yi was finally back to normal, wearing only a pair of tattered underwear, and fully experienced what it meant to have the wind blowing on your butt and feel cold.

"Brother Wang, wear this." Zhang Qian took out one of his own clothes from his ring and threw it to him.

Everyone in the mercenary group knew that Zhang Qian had a spatial ring. Wang Er wasn't surprised; he just took it with tears in his eyes and said with great sorrow, "See? This is the power of the Ghost Bee. So, never be impulsive."

Zhang Qian nodded seriously, taking the matter to heart. Wang Er was teaching him with his life, and he was even a little moved... Hehe, just kidding.

Having gotten off to a bad start, the two became even more cautious and slowed down their pace. They didn't encounter anyone until nightfall. Their greatest danger was that a python suddenly jumped out of the river halfway through their journey. This kind of overlord-level creature, which could dominate on Earth, was just a relatively large insect on the Tianxing Continent. It was a delicious meal in the eyes of wild beasts and a wonderful ingredient in the eyes of Wang Er, who was skilled in cooking.

With a little effort, Zhang Qian chopped off its head with a single stroke. Blood splattered everywhere, but for some reason, he felt a sense of pleasure, a thrill of killing, as he severed the snake's head.

The Ghost Night Forest is extremely dangerous at night, as its name suggests. At night, all sorts of evil beasts and other unknown creatures begin to stir, while the beasts and humans that roam the Ghost Night Forest during the day hide away.

Zhang Qian and Wang Er had taken over a cave, which originally housed a gray rock rat. The rat was now trembling and cowering at the back, watching fearfully as Zhang Qian and Wang Er roasted snake meat around the campfire. Gray rock rats were considered rare, harmless first-tier beasts. Aside from being timid and relatively fast, they had no other notable characteristics. If being cute and clumsy counted as a characteristic, then that could be added.

Seeing how pitiful it was, trembling incessantly, Zhang Qian spoke to it in animal language, "Hey, I'm telling you, don't be afraid, we don't eat rat meat."

These words were like celestial music, and the gray rock rat, which had been on edge, relaxed a little, but remained wary, huddled under the rock crevice, trembling less violently.

"It's actually a gray rock rat! Let me tell you, the gray rock rat has 'rat' in its name, but its meat is not like ordinary cooked meat. It has a very pleasant aroma and is a rare delicacy. I've been to the Treasure Pavilion in Sword Guard City, where a small dish of steamed gray rock rat meat costs one mid-grade spirit stone."

Although the gray rock rat didn't understand what Wang Er was thinking, it could tell from his drooling expression what he was planning. The gray rock rat, a rare animal in the Ghost Night Forest, was so scared that it wet itself and trembled even more violently.

"Don't scare it." Zhang Qian tossed over a piece of roasted snake meat. "Here, have a taste."

The gray rock rat huddled under a protruding rock, raised its pig-like nose and sniffed hard, a drop of saliva dripping down its throat. However, it was afraid of Wang Er and hesitated to come over and pick it up, but dared not.

After a long while, and after a fierce struggle, the gray rock rat could not resist the temptation of the food. Having only ever eaten insects and pine cones, it had never eaten roasted meat before, and had never seen such fragrant food, especially the special roasted meat from the Wang family, whose aroma was simply too tempting.

With its eyes fixed on Wang Er and Zhang Qian, especially Wang Er, the gray rock rat crept over slowly, tentatively reaching out a small paw to touch the roasted meat before withdrawing it. Seeing that Wang Er and Zhang Qian were busy eating and completely ignoring it, the gray rock rat touched the meat again, then quickly picked up the piece and ran back to the corner as if it had done something very dangerous, baring its two buck teeth and panting heavily with its little tongue sticking out.
