"Apart from today, I have only celebrated my birthday once in my twenty years of life so far."

Liang Qing sat on the floor opposite Yan Su, hugging her knees and listening attentively.

She listened attentively, and Yan Su spoke earnestly as well.

"The moon that day looked exactly the same as today, even the color of the moonlight was the same as I remember."

He looked up at the moon, his eyes still red-rimmed, but the tears that had been welling up in his eyes earlier had vanished without him noticing while he was speaking.

“That day was the night before their divorce. I…” He hesitated for a moment, then continued, “When my mother came out of the room with her suitcase, she passed by the floor-to-ceiling window on the second floor and saw me sitting on the balcony. We looked at each other through the glass of the floor-to-ceiling window.”

“I can’t explain why I looked at her back then, just like I don’t understand why she looked at me like that that day,” he suddenly looked at Liang Qing. “You know what? The way she looked at me that day was just like the way a mother looks at a child.”

Liang Qing opened her mouth as if to say something, but Yan Su did not give her a chance to interrupt. She immediately understood that Yan Su just wanted her to listen.

He said quickly, "But she never treated me as her child. She never held me, never took care of me, never even educated me. She didn't care about my food, clothing, shelter, or my academic performance. She didn't care about anything about me."

"I still remember clearly what she said to the nanny: 'Take care of her however you like, as long as she's alive.'"

At this point, Yan Su's expression finally changed slightly. He chuckled twice and murmured, "As long as you're alive, that's enough."

He quickly calmed down. "The nanny kept me alive as she said, and even took good care of me. She was a responsible nanny who taught me how to take care of myself like a normal person, so that I wouldn't be like an idiot who couldn't take care of myself."

"Under such circumstances, you can imagine that I am not close to her. Perhaps when I was very young, I still longed for maternal love, after all, she is my mother, at least by blood. But as time went by, my expectations were exhausted."

“She treated me like a stranger, and I treated her the same way. We had no feelings for each other, and our daily interactions were just out of politeness.”

"Hearing that they got divorced and seeing that she was leaving, to be honest, I didn't feel anything special. Whether she was there or not made no difference to me, just as my existence was insignificant to her."

"But that day she was bewitched by something. She clearly left the house in a car, but returned twenty minutes later."

"A birthday cake reappeared on the balcony with her." Yan Su pointed to the balcony. "My balcony isn't as empty as this one, with nothing there."

"That balcony was much bigger than this one, with a table and chairs. She lit candles and asked me to make a wish. Her expression was more friendly than I had ever seen before, and her voice was gentler than I had ever heard before."

"But her unusual behavior didn't move me or make me happy. I just felt confused and didn't know what she was up to."

"But in the end I chose to cooperate with her, because it was the simplest thing to do."

"Whether I question her strange behavior out of bewilderment or angrily accuse her of neglect over the years, it's all too much trouble. Besides, I don't want to know why she's acting this way, because I've gradually stopped treating her as my mother the day she stopped treating me as her son. I don't want to know anything about her thoughts."

“After I made a wish according to her wishes, I looked at her and listened to her talk. The more I listened, the more I wanted to laugh,” Yan Su said and then he really laughed. His chest heaved violently as he laughed. “A mother who had been indifferent to her child for so many years seemed to only remember that she was the child’s mother at this moment and fussed over him for nearly ten minutes.”

"It's almost like the saying, 'A dying man's words are good.'"

Yan Su's smile vanished as he spoke, replaced by a sorrowful expression.

"Finally, she burst into tears. Before I could even react, she took my hand. It turned out her hand was warm too."

"With tears in her eyes but a smile on her face, she said, 'Keep hating us. As long as you hate us, you'll never become like us.'"

Yan Su began to talk about his parents, “Their marriage was based on a man’s lust and a woman’s materialism.”

“They took from each other; one saw her as a beautiful toy, the other as gold and silver. Similarly, neither of them ever treated the other as a human being, and neither of them looked down on the other.”

“Beautiful toys are just a slightly better substitute; in the eyes of someone like Lin Kangzhi, they are nothing more than ‘whores’.”

"But when they see others as 'whores,' have they forgotten that they are the clients of prostitutes?"

He scoffed, "'Prostitute' and 'client,' who is more noble? When they accuse prostitutes of being heartless, have they ever considered that they themselves are ten or a hundred times more heartless than them? Who would dare to show affection to beasts like them?"

"As she said, I did hate them. Before she shed tears, I hated both of them equally and couldn't tell who I hated more."

"But her tears diluted my hatred for her. This was not just because she shed tears for me, but also because she still retained a shred of humanity. She had not completely degenerated into a beast like my father. Between the two of them, she was far more noble than him, so naturally I hated her less."

“‘You must live well, live better than any of us!’ These were the last words she said to me before she left.”

"Actually, she didn't need to tell me this. I had already told myself that no matter how hard I tried, I could never become either of them."

"Over the years, I have lived like an upright person. In my studies, I have maintained excellent grades; in my social interactions, I have observed etiquette and have never done anything that was dishonorable; in my personal life, I have never engaged in frivolous relationships."

"As long as others don't treat me rudely, I will give them the respect they deserve. I have never hurt any innocent person."

“I thought this would let everyone know that I am different from them, but I was wrong.”

"People still see me as the same kind of person as them, as if I can only be a 'whore' or a 'client,' either to be played or to play others."

He looked intently at Liang Qing, forcing himself to speak in the calmest tone the thing he least wanted others to know.
