NBA's King of Talking
Chapter 5 Fulfilling the Slam Dunk Dream
Lamb glanced gratefully at Jia Fei, inwardly marveling at how intelligent people of Asian descent were, even their reactions were lightning fast.
Jia Fei and Lamb also started warming up, and they did so very seriously. Although they weren't real professional players, Coach Jim Cahon always placed great emphasis on players' fundamentals and details, and he absolutely wouldn't allow players to participate in scrimmage or matches without warming up first.
Jia Fei glanced at the people who had come today. Besides himself and Lamb, there were Kemba Walker, Shabazz Napier, Alex Oriak, and Art Mayok. There were six people in total, all of whom were official players on the UConn Eskimo Dogs team.
Everyone greeted each other upon meeting. Since winning the championship, they hadn't had any intensive training together. So even though there were only six of them today, and they could only play three-on-three, it was still their first competitive training session since winning the championship.
The UConn Eskimo Dogs, a traditionally strong NCAA team, have won the NCAA Tournament championship three times to date. Their vast training facility is adorned with a plethora of accolades. Both in terms of facilities and training, this training facility is among the best in the nation.
As a student at Cornell University and a player on the Husky Team, I feel very proud to see a wall full of honors. And since I contributed to some of these honors, I naturally feel even more involved.
UCLA has produced a significant number of NBA players, including many well-known names. From Ray Allen in 1996 to Caron Butler in 2002, and then to Emeka Okafor (2004's second overall pick) and Ben Gordon (2004's third overall pick), they are all sources of pride for their alma mater.
The most recent NBA player from UConn was Hasheem Thabeet, who was drafted second overall in 2009, ahead of James Harden. Although he hasn't lived up to his potential in the NBA yet, the fact that the school has produced so many high-draft NBA players speaks volumes about the school's prestige.
Jia Fei changed into his training clothes and began warming up seriously. This was his first time playing basketball at the arena since winning the championship and incorporating Allen Iverson's physical talents. He was also eager to see how he would improve after merging with AI's physical abilities.
Regarding Allen Iverson's physical attributes, Jia Fei, a long-time fan, has a particularly deep impression. Iverson is said to be 183cm tall, but any longtime fan knows that he is actually not 183cm; his actual height is probably around 180cm.
Previously, Jia Fei had never understood this. Logically, the difference between 183cm and 180cm isn't that significant; it's just a matter of height. Since both are short and play guard, there's no need to exaggerate their height. The NBA is full of players who exaggerate their height, mostly exaggerating. Famous examples include Charles Barkley, Larry Johnson, and Ben Wallace. Exaggerating height is less common; the most famous examples are KG and KD, one not wanting to play center and the other not wanting to play power forward.
It wasn't until later, when Jia Fei came into contact with feet, that he discovered 183cm was 6 feet, and 180cm was 5 feet 11 inches. He felt that this might be the real reason why Iverson exaggerated his height.
Many centers also have this problem. For example, many centers are listed as 213cm tall, but their actual height is 211cm. In fact, it doesn't seem like much difference. But you should know that 213cm is considered a 7-foot tall man, while 211cm is 6 feet 11 inches.
Everyone has vanity. A 178cm person might say they're 180cm, a 168cm person might say they're 170cm, but a 172cm person wouldn't insist they're 174cm. In reality, a 2cm difference is very small, and sometimes it's purely psychological.
Of course, only he himself probably knows the real reason.
Allen Iverson's physical attributes are incredible. He is short and thin, but despite his height, he has long arms and large hands, which allows him to keep his center of gravity very low when dribbling, as if he is flying close to the ground.
As for his dynamic physical attributes, Iverson was simply terrifying. He possessed the fastest first step in the NBA at the time, his explosiveness was extremely strong, his steals were lightning-fast, and at 1.8 meters tall, he could easily complete a two-handed dunk.
There's been talk in the NBA before about how strong Allen Iverson would be if he were 10cm taller. But that's just speculation; nobody knows if he would still be as fast or agile at 190cm.
Jia Fei possesses excellent static physical attributes; he has the physique of a typical swingman, with a great wingspan, broad shoulders, a large frame, long Achilles tendons, and high muscle density. Being able to enter the rotation at a prestigious university like UConn in his freshman year speaks volumes about his physical talent and technical foundation. However, it's clear that relying solely on these basics is far from enough to dominate the NBA.
After stretching, Jia Fei finally touched the basketball. He really liked the feeling—the feeling of holding the basketball with one hand. This feeling was comparable to touching a female's white rabbit; the actual sensation was very different, but the stimulation was the same.
Jia Fei caught the ball with one hand and took a free throw, but perhaps because he hadn't shot in a few days, the ball missed...
"Haha, Jia, you've gotten rusty, haven't you? I haven't seen you play basketball lately!" Art Mayork said.
Art Mayok, standing at 208cm, is an Australian basketball player born in Sudan. He is 24 years old and will be participating in this year's NBA draft.
"Yeah, that's why I need to practice more!" Jia Fei received a pass from Kemba Walker and calmly made the free throw!
After making a free throw, Jia Fei picked up a basketball and dribbled towards the basket. During this process, he was astonished to find that he could run very fast with ease, without any effort at all. This feeling of lightness was truly wonderful, much like the feeling of running barefoot in a spring field as a child without underwear.
Upon reaching the basket, Jia Fei jumped on one foot and easily completed a dunk with one hand!
For a player who is 201cm tall, dunking is not unusual. As long as one's jumping ability isn't as short as a matchbox, completing a dunk shouldn't be a problem. But right now, Jia Fei felt that dunking was too easy; he didn't even put in any effort! He wondered if he would hit his head directly on the backboard if he jumped with all his might.
Jia Fei's excitement was palpable. In his previous life, he was less than 1.8 meters tall. Forget dunking, even grabbing the rim was a struggle. His dream was simply to dunk at standard rim height, even if it was just a clean dunk. To achieve his dunking dream, he once secretly tried his hand at a children's basketball hoop. Unfortunately, he succeeded in the dunk, but he broke the rim, for which he had to pay for it…
Jia Fei knew that his current incredible speed and explosive jumping ability weren't something the original owner possessed, but rather a result of merging with Allen Iverson's physical talents. With these physical gifts, combined with his height and wingspan, he was practically a tiger with wings.
