NBA's King of Talking

Chapter 19 Draft

Jia Fei wasn't that reluctant to part with Jordan's autograph. After all, Jordan wasn't his idol. He'd probably be even more excited if he ever met Iverson. Besides, he felt he wanted to be a star someday, and he wanted to experience the feeling of being worshipped by fans!

The feeling of waiting is complicated. I want to know the result as soon as possible, but I'm also afraid of being disappointed if the result is bad. Fortunately, I have a basketball in my hand and teammates around me, so I can focus all my energy on the basketball court.

June 24th finally arrived, the day the annual NBA draft would be held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Furthermore, the 2011 NBA draft would be the New Jersey Nets' final NBA draft. After the following season, the team would relocate to Brooklyn, New York, and be renamed the Brooklyn Nets.

Many talented young people gathered in New Jersey to participate in this year's draft, including Jia Fei and three others.

On that day, Jia Fei and three others appeared at the talent show dressed in identical gray suits and gray, white, and blue checkered ties. Their suits and ties were arranged by their agent, Jeff Schwartz, and wearing the same style of suit made them appear even more like a group.

This was Jia Fei's first time wearing a suit since his time travel. Wearing the suit made his already tall and slender figure appear even more upright, and his already handsome appearance became even more captivating. Previously, fans had started a heated discussion on online forums about the looks of this year's rookies, and he successfully stood out from the crowd, making it to the final round of the "Most Handsome Rookie" discussion alongside Florida forward Chandler Parsons.

Chandler Parsons was known as a "tall, rich, and handsome" man by Chinese fans in his previous life, so his looks were naturally very striking. Jia Fei felt that probably only Parsons could threaten his good looks.

The contest wasn't a contest to choose the most handsome guy, so even though Jia Fei and Parsons fought tooth and nail on the looks list, it didn't change the heartbreaking fact that both of them were predicted to be in the second round.

Upon arriving at the draft venue, Kemba Walker separated from Jia Fei and the other two, going to the green room as a lottery favorite. Jia Fei and the other two waited in the lobby.

Jia Fei admires the NBA's commercial operations. From preparation and pre-draft hype to commercial promotion and on-site setup, everything for a draft is meticulously designed. The draft is like a grand show, and the players are an integral part of that show.

Through the on-site camera lens, Jia Fei and his team saw a group of lottery candidates sitting in the small green room, including the top picks Kyrie Irving and Derrick Williams.

Art Mayork, who was sitting next to Jia Fei, pointed at Kyrie Irving on the screen and said to Jia Fei, "Jia, have you seen Kyrie Irving?"

Jia Fei nodded. Of course he saw it. Irving was wearing a black suit today, looking like a well-behaved boy, a stark contrast to his previous arrogant claim that he was only trying out for the Cavaliers.

“Kerry is only trying out for the Cavaliers. It would be funny if he didn’t get drafted by them!” Art Mayork said.

Oriak said, "I think the Cavaliers must have some kind of agreement with him, otherwise why wouldn't he give tryouts to other teams?"

While Art Mayork and Oriac were discussing whether Irving would be the number one draft pick this year, Jia Fei remained silent. He was a time traveler, and barring any unforeseen circumstances, Irving would indeed be the number one pick; the other was just bluffing, but that was the fact.

Soon, the draft officially began after league commissioner David Stern gave a speech! Seeing David, an old man with a full head of white hair, Jia Fei sighed that in the 2023 he had traveled to, this figure no longer existed in the world of basketball.

When the draft began, just like in the previous life, the Cavaliers ultimately did not select Derrick Williams or Kemba Walker, but instead selected Kyrie Irving, the Duke star guard who claimed he was only working out for them.

The Minnesota Timberwolves, holding the second overall pick, selected forward Derrick Williams. Williams' poor performance at the Combine didn't negatively impact his draft stock; while still a top prospect, he clearly didn't generate as much buzz as Kyrie Irving.

Some experts have suggested that a key reason the Cavaliers didn't draft Derrick Williams was that they wanted to bring back "that man" in the summer of 2014. As for who "that man" is, the whole world knows.

Whether Derrick Williams becomes the second overall pick or not is of no concern to Jia Fei. He has no grudge against this beastly forward; he just provoked him to earn some points, and in a way, Williams helped him out by indirectly giving him points.

The NBA draft is still ongoing. David Stern announced the Cavaliers' fourth pick: Tristan Thompson (TT). Yes, that's right, the man who conquered the Kardashian women in Jia Fei's past life.

That means the Cavaliers didn't use their two first-round picks to select Kemba Walker!

The NBA photographers are really good at switching shots. Right here, TT has already gone up on stage to receive David Stern's blessing, while Kemba Walker's expression is being shown to everyone through the camera.

Kemba Walker's lips twitched visibly, clearly indicating his disappointment, even though the Bobcats had given him a draft promise.

Who wouldn't want to be snatched away by someone using a top-5 draft pick? The Bobcats aren't some NBA powerhouse; it's a new team, and Charlotte is just an ordinary city.

However, the Bobcats' draft pick came quickly, and David Stern announced that they had selected Kemba Walker, the star guard from UConn!

The camera then focused on Kemba Walker, who clearly seemed relieved, letting out a long breath and a smile appearing on his face.

Regardless, he was still selected in the top ten, nothing surprising, but at least nothing went wrong. NBA draft history is full of examples of top prospects falling to the second round, like DeAndre Jordan and even earlier, Rashard Lewis.

As for the MOP, Ellington was the last round of the first round in 09, while Chalmers, the MOP in 08, dropped directly to the second round.

Kemba Walker was selected 9th overall in the first round, which is considered average.

The camera then switched back to the lobby, focusing on Jia Fei and his two companions. Jia Fei also thought that what they did was really professional, excelling in both attention to detail and its ability to generate buzz and entertainment.

Jia Fei and the other two were clapping, all happy for Kemba Walker. They were dressed in the same suits as Kemba Walker, which made the occasion feel very special.

Kemba Walker grinned as he put on the Bobcats' team cap and went on stage to receive a congratulatory message from Commissioner David Stern.
