Chapter 37 Entering the Tiger’s Den
Murong Xuewei immediately understood his intention: "You mean..."
Gu Ye nodded. "Since someone wants my life, then I'll venture into the lion's den to see who's so arrogant as to collude with bandits to murder a high-ranking official."
Do you have someone you suspect?
Gu Ye gave a soft "hmm," and said, "Right now, it's just a suspicion, I'm not sure."
Murong Xuewei held Gu Ye's hand tightly, "I'll go with you."
Gu Ye looked down at the hand Murong Xuewei was holding, and their eyes met again. The cool moonlight fell on Murong Xuewei's face, and a blush rose on her cheeks.
Murong Xuewei shyly let go of her hand, "I was just afraid that your injuries were too severe and you would die here. If you died, where would I find another ally?"
Gu Ye's lips curled into a smile. "Don't worry, now that I've taken your money, I won't let you lose a good ally so easily. Besides, you're now known as Mrs. Gu, and I don't want to have to watch my wife remarry so soon after our wedding."
Murong Xuewei turned around and said, "You're so glib. No wonder the women in the capital like you so much. It seems you've said these kinds of sweet nothings quite often."
Gu Ye turned Murong Xuewei around and looked seriously into her eyes. "I, Gu Ye, can swear to God that I have only ever said this to you."
Gu Ye raised three fingers to swear an oath, but Murong Xuewei pulled his hand away.
"Alright, alright, I believe you. Let's get down to business!"
Gu Ye picked up the larger set of clothes and put them on, then handed the cleaner set of clothes to Murong Xuewei. Murong Xuewei looked at the clothes in Gu Ye's hand, took them, and turned around to change.
Murong Xuewei put her hair up in a bun and tucked it into her hat, and at first glance she really did look like a young man.
Just as Gu Ye was about to set off, Murong Xuewei suddenly grabbed him, "Wait. I brought signal flares with me when I went into the mountains. Let's fire the signal flares first and wait for the reinforcements from the city to arrive."
"Xuewei, send out a distress signal first, so reinforcements know our location," Gu Ye said. "I'll go scout ahead."
"No way!" Murong Xuewei refused without even thinking.
Gu Ye looked at Murong Xuewei with a puzzled expression.
"What I mean is, what if you leave before reinforcements arrive, and I get found by the bandits first? My mediocre skills are no match for the skilled bandits."
Gu Ye stared at Murong Xuewei, pondered for a moment, and said, "Alright then! You'll come with me, but you must follow my instructions."
Murong Xuewei nodded, took out a small firework tube from her bosom, lit it, and shot it into the sky. A red firework bloomed in the morning light and then disappeared.
"Alright, let's go," Murong Xuewei said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Looking at Murong Xuewei's eyes, Gu Ye felt that the two of them didn't seem to be going to a den of wolves, but rather to hunt prey.
The two sneaked into the mountain stronghold quietly, and by disguising themselves as bandits, they didn't attract much attention.
Under the cover of night, Murong Xuewei and Gu Ye stumbled upon the back of the bandits' room, where two bandits were complaining.
"Have you heard? The boss's in a bind," one of the bandits muttered. "General Gu and his wife have both run away. If the higher-ups find out, we're in deep trouble."
Gu Ye and Murong Xuewei exchanged a glance, then pricked up their ears to listen and see if they could glean any more useful information.
"Yeah, I heard that big shot is not someone to mess with. If he finds out we messed things up..." Another bandit shuddered.
Just then, a series of hurried footsteps approached. A man who appeared to be a minor leader shouted, "Don't just stand there! The boss has ordered everyone to search the mountain immediately! We must bring General Gu and his wife back!"
The two bandits, no longer bothering with their idle chatter, quickly grabbed their pistols and, with their broadswords, followed the main group into the mountains.
Gu Ye whispered to Murong Xuewei, "While they're all out, let's go check out the leader's room. Maybe we can find some clues."
Murong Xuewei nodded: "Okay."
The two cautiously sneaked into the depths of the mountain stronghold and finally arrived at a house that was guarded.
“Everyone else has gone to search the mountains, but people have been left here to guard the area. There must be some clues we need here.”
"Are you ready?" Gu Ye gripped Murong Xuewei's hand tightly. "I'll go up and knock him out first, then you go find a rope and tie him up."
Murong Xuewei took a deep breath. "Okay."
Gu Ye and Murong Xuewei stood in front of the gate and exchanged a knowing glance.
Gu Ye gently pushed open the door and saw two bandits standing idly at the entrance.
"Hey, why didn't you two search the mountains?" one of the bandits asked.
Gu Ye pretended to be nonchalant and nodded: "Um, the boss asked us to come and relieve him."
While they were talking, Murong Xuewei looked around for a rope that could be used to tie someone up.
Gu Ye walked up to the two bandits. Before they could react, Gu Ye had already made his move. With two loud bangs, the bandits fell to the ground.
Murong Xuewei acted swiftly, finding a rope to tie the person up. Her movements were so efficient that Gu Ye, watching how quickly Murong Xuewei helped, began to wonder if she often did this before.
"What are you looking at?" Murong Xuewei asked, raising an eyebrow.
Gu Ye quickly looked away and pretended to cough. "It's nothing, I just think you... are quite capable."
Murong Xuewei glanced at the two large rice dumplings on the ground. "Would you believe me if I said I used to help my mother wrap rice dumplings at home?"
The two quietly slipped into the room and began to search it carefully. The room was small, but it contained a lot of things.
Bookshelves, desks, cabinets... important information may be hidden in every corner.
"Tell me, who exactly hates you so much that they'd collude with bandits to take your life?" Murong Xuewei asked in a low voice as she flipped through the documents on the table.
Gu Ye was inspecting the paintings on the wall when he heard this, he frowned, "I can't be sure, after all, I've offended quite a few people during my years as an official in the court."
Upon hearing this, Murong Xuewei looked up at Gu Ye and met his gentle gaze.
Their eyes met, and their hearts began to race involuntarily.
"Ahem, have you found anything over there?" Murong Xuewei was the first to look away, trying to hide her panic.
Gu Ye also snapped out of his daze and continued searching, "Not yet, what about your end?"
The two searched more and more urgently, and occasionally their eyes would meet, only to be quickly looked away in a panic.
Suddenly, footsteps and voices came from outside.
"Oh no, someone's coming!" Murong Xuewei exclaimed in a low voice.
Gu Ye quickly looked around, searching for a hiding place. But the room was too small; there was simply no suitable place to hide.
The footsteps grew closer, and Murong Xuewei anxiously spun around. Suddenly, the hem of her skirt accidentally caught on a protrusion in the corner of the wall.
With a "click," the ground suddenly began to tilt.
"Ah!" Murong Xuewei cried out in surprise, her foot slipped, and she fell downwards.
