As the days went by, Mengmeng and Xingxing gradually had more contact. During this time, Xingxing would only talk to her a few words more often.
However, recently, Mengmeng discovered a secret.
That afternoon, as usual, she took the rainbow she had drawn to look at the stars. When she opened the door, Mengmeng saw Xingxing sitting on the edge of the bed with her back to the door, secretly throwing the white pills in her palm under the bed.
"Stars!" Mengmeng exclaimed, startling the boy so much that he trembled and turned around abruptly, his eyes wide open like a frightened fawn.
Mengmeng quickly walked to the bedside, squatted down, and picked up the dusty pill from the ground.
"You can't do this!" The little girl frowned, her voice unusually serious.
"Aunt Lin said this medicine will make you feel better, you should take it properly."
Xingxing's lips trembled, his hands gripped the sheets tightly, his knuckles turned white. Upon hearing this, he shook his head violently, letting out a small animal-like whimper from his throat, looking extremely pained.
Mengmeng was also a little frightened when she saw this, but she still softened her voice and sat an arm’s length away from Xingxing to ask.
"Why not take medicine?" This is something I learned from Dr. Lin a while ago: give the stars enough space.
Xingxing didn't answer Mengmeng's question immediately; he remained silent for a long time, so long that Mengmeng thought he wouldn't answer.
Just as she was about to go to Dr. Lin to ask what to do, a hoarse, fearful voice softly sounded: "Bitter...ate...sleepy..."
Mengmeng blinked and suddenly understood something. She remembered how Xingxing looked drowsy after taking her medicine last week, like a lifeless rag doll.
"The medicine is bitter, and you'll be very sleepy after taking it, right?" Thinking of this, Mengmeng turned around and focused her gaze back on Xingxing, asking patiently.
After hearing this, Xingxing nodded slightly but did not speak again. His eyes flickered, as if he was afraid that Mengmeng would be angry.
Mengmeng bit her lower lip and thought for a while, then her eyes suddenly lit up: "How about we make a promise?"
Xingxing looked at Mengmeng with some confusion. The little girl leaned forward slightly, but cautiously maintained her distance, and spoke again: "If you take your medicine obediently for five days... no, for five consecutive days, I'll take you to see the moon!"
Xingxing's eyes widened slightly, a little expression of interest on his face. Clearly, Mengmeng has learned to recognize things now.
"Really...really?" Xingxing's voice was as soft as a feather falling to the ground, and she was also careful not to refuse.
"Really!" Mengmeng nodded vigorously, as if trying to convince Xingxing that she was right.
"I know a really great spot to watch the moon, right under the big cherry blossom tree in the backyard! But—"
The little girl held up one finger: "You must take the medicine for five days straight, not a single day less."
Xingxing lowered her head, her long eyelashes casting shadows on her face, and didn't immediately agree.
Mengmeng didn't say anything more, but waited patiently as he drew invisible patterns on the sheet with his finger. A sly smile flashed in Mengmeng's eyes. She knew that this was Xingxing's habit when he was thinking.
"Five days..." After an unknown amount of time, Xingxing finally raised her head and stretched out five thin fingers.
"And then...the moon?"
“Yes, the moon!” Mengmeng smiled brightly, holding up her little finger. “Pinky promise! I promise I won’t lie to you!”
Xingxing hesitated as she looked at the outstretched finger, then slowly extended her little finger and gently hooked it around Mengmeng's. This was their first real physical contact.
That evening, Xie Yumin was organizing the monthly report for "Starry Home" when Mengmeng skipped and hopped into the study.
"Thank you, Mom! I made a promise with Xingxing!" Mengmeng climbed onto Xie Yumin's lap and said excitedly.
Upon hearing this, Xie Yumin subconsciously put down the documents, hugged her daughter, and couldn't help but ask curiously, "What agreement made you so happy?"
Mengmeng told Xie Yumin everything that had happened that afternoon, including why Xingxing didn't want to take her medicine and their "moon promise".
After listening, Xie Yumin was filled with mixed feelings. On the one hand, she was proud of her daughter's kindness and wisdom; but on the other hand, she was worried about the safety of the plan.
"Honey, you know Xingxing's situation is a bit special. Taking him out at night..."
“It’s right in the backyard! Very close!” Mengmeng guessed that Xie Yumin would refuse, so she explained eagerly.
"And Xingxing has been much better lately. Aunt Lin said he didn't lose his temper at all last week."
Looking at her daughter's expectant eyes, Xie Yumin couldn't bear to refuse her outright.
She frowned, seemingly deep in thought, before speaking again after a moment: "How about this, if you really want to take your child to see the stars and the moon, Mom can agree, but an adult must watch from a distance, okay? This is for your safety."
Mengmeng pouted, clearly not satisfied with the condition of "adults being present," but she knew this was Xie's mother's bottom line, so she ultimately compromised: "Okay... but could you please not let Xingxing know? He's afraid of adults..."
“Of course,” Xie Yumin kissed her daughter’s forehead, “Aunt Lin and the others will hide very well, like playing hide-and-seek.”
Hearing this, Mengmeng's face lit up with a smile again, and she hugged Xie Yumin tightly, "Thank you, Mom! I knew you were the best!"
Xie Yumin smiled slightly, gently touched her daughter's cheek, and said nothing more.
For the next four days, Mengmeng would "check" on Xingxing's medication every day. To her surprise, Xingxing really kept her promise and obediently took the pills every time, even though her little face was always scrunched up.
"Here you go." On the afternoon of the fifth day, Mengmeng mysteriously slipped a small box to Xingxing.
Xingxing opened it with curiosity and found several exquisite fruit candies inside.
"Take one before taking the medicine, and it won't be so bitter!" Mengmeng said proudly, then moved closer to Xingxing.
"This is what my dad brought me last time; I've been reluctant to eat it."
Xingxing carefully took out a pink candy, smelled it, and then softly said, "...Thank you."
Mengmeng still had a smile on her face and waved her hand slightly, but she was very happy inside.
She knew how precious those two words were to Xingxing.
In the dead of night, Mengmeng, dressed in her pajamas, tiptoed to Xingxing's door. To her surprise, Xingxing was already dressed and sitting on the edge of the bed, waiting. Her eyes shone brightly in the darkness, as if she was also looking forward to what was to come.
"Are you ready?" Mengmeng asked Xingxing in a low voice.
She nodded, but her movements were slightly stiff.
The side effects of the medication left him feeling drowsy, but he forced himself to stay awake tonight, all for the sake of this promise.
