Time passes slowly.

Gu Yinshen had to leave first to deal with some troublesome matters due to work reasons.

On the morning of the day she left, Mengmeng stood at the gate of "Xingmeng Home," a house converted from her ancestral home, her little hands tightly gripping the hem of her father's suit.

Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on her youthful face.

"Daddy, when are you coming back?" Mengmeng looked up, her big, watery eyes filled with reluctance.

Gu Yinshen squatted down, gently smoothed out the wrinkles on his daughter's skirt, and tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear before speaking softly.

"Soon, baby, Daddy will be back after he finishes dealing with things at the company." His voice was deep and gentle, carrying an undeniable promise. He then glanced in Xie Yumin's direction before giving her his instructions.

"You must listen to what your mother says, okay?"

Mengmeng nodded vigorously, then pursed her lips, as if trying her best to hold back her tears.

Xie Yumin stood aside, watching the father and daughter bid each other a reluctant farewell. She felt both warm and bittersweet. She stepped forward and gently embraced Mengmeng.

"We'll be alright," Xie Yumin said to Gu Yinshen, her gaze firm and resolute.

After seeing Gu Yinshen off, Xie Yumin took Mengmeng's hand and walked into the main building of "Starry Home".

This former ancestral home of the Gu family has now been transformed into a bright and warm children's charity center, taking in many children like Mengmeng who need special care. The walls of the corridor are covered with the children's colorful paintings, and sunlight streams in through the floor-to-ceiling windows, making the whole space warm and full of hope.

"What do you want to do today?" Xie Yumin didn't want Mengmeng to be immersed in the emotions of parting, so she lowered her head to ask, trying to divert the child's attention.

Mengmeng tilted her head and thought for a moment before smiling broadly and saying, "I want to go see the new kids."

After seeing that Mengmeng wasn't too affected, Xie Yumin smiled and nodded, "Okay, Mommy will take you."

Since the establishment of "Starry Home", Mengmeng has always been the first to welcome new children.

This little girl, who has experienced so many hardships, seems to be more sensitive and compassionate than her peers.

After passing through the sunny activity area, Xie Yumin and Mengmeng arrived at the accommodation area.

Just as I reached the door of the room at the end of the corridor, a piercing crash suddenly came from inside, followed by the sound of things breaking.

Xie Yumin's heart tightened, and she was about to push the door open when Mengmeng had already tiptoed and looked inside through the small window in the door.

"Thank you, Mom!" Mengmeng's voice suddenly turned panicked. "There's a little boy inside who's hurting himself!"

Xie Yumin immediately pushed open the door, and the scene before her eyes shocked her.

A thin boy, about eight or nine years old, was huddled in a corner, scratching his arm with his fingernails, leaving bloody marks.

His eyes were vacant, as if he felt no pain, and he mechanically repeated the self-harming actions.

The lamp in the room was overturned on the floor, and the bed sheets were torn into a mess.

"Xingxing! Stop!" Dr. Lin, the nurse who rushed over after hearing the sound, exclaimed, but the boy did not respond.

Just as the adults were hesitating about what to do, Mengmeng suddenly broke free from Xie Yumin's hand and rushed towards the boy.

"Mengmeng!" Xie Yumin's heart almost stopped when she saw this scene, fearing that the out-of-control boy would hurt her daughter.

But Mengmeng showed no fear. She ran to Xingxing, cautiously reaching out her hand, but didn't touch him. Instead, she spoke softly, seemingly trying to comfort him: "Big brother, don't do that, it will hurt."

After he finished speaking, Xingxing miraculously stopped what he was doing. He slowly raised his head, and for the first time, his empty eyes focused on Mengmeng's face. His gaze was a mixture of confusion, pain, and a faint, almost imperceptible longing.

Mengmeng still had a smile on her face, and then spoke again.

"Look," Mengmeng pulled a piece of fruit candy from her pocket, which Gu Yinshen had given her before he left, "this is for you, it's very sweet."

Xingxing didn't take the candy, but she didn't continue to hurt herself either. She just stared at Mengmeng absentmindedly, lost in thought.

Taking the opportunity, Dr. Lin stepped forward and whispered to Mengmeng, "Good child, could you help Aunt Lin bring him to the bedside? We need to bandage him."

Hearing this, Mengmeng nodded obediently and reached out her hand to Xingxing again, "Big brother, shall we go over there?"

Everyone held their breath and watched the scene unfold before them.

To everyone's surprise, Xingxing slowly stood up and followed Mengmeng to the bedside, but his eyes remained alert and his body tense, as if he might explode again at any moment.

Dr. Lin breathed a barely perceptible sigh of relief and quickly and professionally cleaned Xingxing's wounds, applied ointment, and just as she was about to bandage it, Xingxing suddenly began to struggle violently, letting out incoherent screams and waving her arms wildly. Because she was so agitated, she almost hit Mengmeng.

Dr. Lin instinctively tried to hold the person down, but it was to no avail.

"No, he's too agitated!" Dr. Lin had to call two other nurses to hold Xingxing down while preparing a sedative.

Before Mengmeng could react, Xie Yumin held her in her arms, watching helplessly as the needle pierced Xingxing's arm. The boy's struggles gradually weakened, and he eventually fell into a drug-induced coma. A tear slid down from the corner of his tightly closed eye, leaving a dark stain on the pillow.

All of this is indeed too cruel for Mengmeng.

"Why...why did you do this to my little brother?" Mengmeng's voice trembled as she tightly gripped Xie Yumin's clothes, unable to help but murmur the question.

Xie Yumin crouched down, looking directly into her daughter's teary eyes, and then earnestly explained, "That little boy's name is Xingxing. He's sick, and sometimes he can't control his behavior. The doctors are helping him, not harming him."

"But...he looks so sad." Mengmeng bit her lower lip, unable to take her eyes off Xingxing's pale face.

Dr. Lin sighed and explained softly, "Xingxing has autism, and he experienced some bad things before coming here. He doesn't like to interact with people and hardly speaks. It's normal for him to get emotional sometimes. If we don't give him a sedative, he will only hurt himself more. Mengmeng, you have to understand us, right?"

Xie Yumin noticed the determination that flashed in Mengmeng's eyes, an expression that was very similar to Gu Yinshen's determined way of solving problems when faced with difficulties.

She pursed her lips slightly, but ultimately didn't say anything more, only patting Mengmeng's head reassuringly.

"Mom, let's go back first. I suddenly remembered that I still have a lot of things to do. We'll come see my little brother again when we have time," Mengmeng said, turning around and leaving with Xie Yumin.
