Chapter 27 Just Follow Along
Teddy didn't understand why the woman who could put people to sleep wanted everyone to squeeze into one taxi, but Sienna didn't say anything, so she went along with it.
Her duty was not to ask questions, but to protect Sienna's safety.
Traveling around with Sienna and Melanie, who is actually a hero and can put people to sleep, is also part of fulfilling his duties.
She actually kind of hoped that Sienna could find someone who wasn't a hero to partner with, but that's okay, the only problem is that they've traveled too far.
Teddy's legs are short and thick, but they are actually quite good. The reason for this is to keep her center of gravity low.
But this means that for every step Sienna takes, Teddy has to take two steps, which is exhausting.
Teddy relaxed in the taxi seat.
She was sitting in the middle, so she could see the road ahead through the odometer and other instruments by sitting up a little straighter.
The driver was driving very carefully, probably because she was wearing a brightly colored bear mask, which startled him quite a bit.
The drive was quite quiet.
Sienna is usually not very talkative, while Melanie, also known as Melaton, is constantly tapping on her phone, clearly one of those who have fallen into the capitalist mobile phone trap.
It was quiet enough, but a little boring. "So where are we going?" Teddy asked.
She thought she'd heard something about pizza? She'd never had it before, but she figured it was something she'd like to eat.
“Well, we’re going to…” She glanced at the driver, then cleared her throat. Sienna was quick-witted in this regard. “We’re going to buy some pizza slices and have a talk with someone.”
"Yeah, that sounds good."
Sienna smiled at her, placed her hand on Teddy's head, and gently patted her hair.
It felt so good, like giving her head a hug. It would have been even better if Sienna had started fiddling with Teddy's ears absentmindedly.
This probably made Sienna quite happy, after all, Teddy's ears are amazing.
After all, before she turned into a bear, her ears were the part of her that most resembled a bear.
She wondered what it would feel like if Sienna played with her ears when she grew bigger.
Perhaps it was when she rode into battle?
But Sienna doesn't have any ranged attack methods... nor any close-range ones, so she needs something like a gun.
Teddy didn't know how he knew about AK-47s.
But she knew, and she even hoped, that Sienna would ride her into battle, mowing down those capitalist swine with two AK-47s.
“Yeah,” Teddy muttered softly.
“Hmm?” Sienna asked.
“Nothing,” Teddy said. “I was just thinking about something.”
"Oh fine."
Just as the taxi began to slow down, Melardon looked up from his phone. "Are we there?"
“Yes, ma’am,” the driver said, bringing the car to a complete stop, the vehicle swaying back and forth a few times. “That’s $11.50 in total,” he said.
Meraton slipped a green $20 bill through the window grille and got out of the car. “Come on, kids.”
Teddy unbuckled her seatbelt—which she thought was ridiculous, but Sienna insisted on wearing it—and then got out of the car from Sienna's side.
As soon as they got out of the car, the taxi made a few loud noises and drove off, leaving the three of them standing on the roadside.
Teddy looked around.
On one side was a small plot of land, overgrown with bushes and tall weeds, divided by a path littered with cigarette butts. This plot of land was sandwiched between a row of houses with backyard fences and a place that looked like a grocery store.
Not far away was an intersection, with a cigar shop on one side and a pizzeria on the other. She figured that the pizzeria, whose parking lot was almost empty, was their destination.
Most of the other buildings around were small houses, and the word "bunker" came to her mind, but she wasn't quite sure if these houses were that type.
Teddy sniffed the air.
Yes, there was the stench of cars and garbage, but beneath that stench was a wonderful aroma that drew her toward the pizzeria as if she were under a spell.
"This kid has a good sense of direction, it's over there."
Teddy barely noticed that Sienna had grabbed her hand to slow her down so that Meraton could go into the pizzeria first.
The heroine held the door open inside the store so that Teddy could follow her in.
She flared her nostrils wide, took a deep breath, and Teddy almost fainted.
It tastes amazing, with flavors of oil, aged cheese, raw onions, and mushrooms.
Just being here made her feel sticky and wonderful all over, and then Teddy looked around the place.
There was a table inside, with two small metal chairs and a small sofa on one side.
There was a very old soda machine next to it, the front of which was cracked. Further ahead, the hall ended at a large circular counter.
Teddy stood on tiptoe and peered inside from the counter, eager to see the wondrous sights within.
A skinny guy, wearing a dirty white work uniform, was rubbing his nose with his knuckles while dough was being squeezed in some kind of jig.
He took something out, flat and wobbly, then spun it around a few times before placing it on a metal plate covered in flour, and then pushed the edge inward with his knuckles.
This was quite interesting, but what caught her attention was a large man whose apron barely covered half of his stomach.
His hairy, muscular arms were swinging back and forth as he spread a thumb-thick layer of pepperoni on a large swath of tomato sauce.
Then he reached into a bag, grabbed two handfuls of cheese, and sprinkled them on the pizza he was making.
In short, this pair of Teddy bears is simply a work of art.
Teddy wanted a pizza like this more than he had in the past two hours.
She turned her head and looked at Sienna with the cutest bear-like eyes she could muster.
Sienna sighed and ruffled her hair. "Let's see."
That's about it.
“Hey!” Meraton shouted.
The big guy was chopping mushrooms with a large knife, completely oblivious to the possibility of cutting his thumb, and stopped when he heard the shout.
"Hmm?" he responded, then turned around and saw Teddy's frightening appearance, Sienna's cool outfit, and Meraton.
“We’re looking for someone,” Meraton said. “I think you might be able to help.”
The burly artist walked toward the counter, wiping his greasy hands with his apron. "Maybe. Who are you looking for?"
Meraton shifted her position and leaned against the counter. "We're looking for a criminal named Homi," she said.
The tall, thin guy behind him dropped the pizza dough in his hand with a "thud" to the ground.
"The five-second rule!" Teddy shouted.
He didn't seem to care. The boy glanced at them, gasped, and then ran away.
"Hey!" the big guy shouted.
"Damn it!" Meraton cursed.
Teddy didn't know what had happened. He only saw the boy who was running backwards slide and stop near the door, turn around and run to a bunch of French fry machines, and put his hand inside.
He suddenly pulled his arm out, and two jets of scalding oil, like whips, shot forward.
Teddy jumped aside, tackled Sienna to the ground, and dodged the blow, the scalding oil whip lashing through the air above their heads.
A fine spray of oil fell around them, some of it landing on Teddy's bare calves, causing her to wince in pain.
It hurt so much! It felt like being stung by a swarm of wet little bees.
“Damn it!” Meraton cursed, then jumped over the counter.
The big guy was screaming now, and the door behind him slammed shut.
"Where did he go?" Teddy asked.
He actually tried to hurt Sienna. She wanted to eat him!
“You can’t get out from the back,” the big guy said. “He has to go around.”
Teddy climbed off Sienna and ran ahead.
She saw Sienna kneel down, her masked eyes wide open, looking around. Sienna was clever; she would figure something out.
Meanwhile, Teddy is going to catch that bastard; if she does a good job, she'll definitely get a good meal.
