Chapter 167 Preparations for Charity Activities
Sienna originally thought that hiring someone like Sam would either be impossible or far beyond her means.
However, in less than a week, Sam had essentially single-handedly created and prepared the entire charity event.
Sienna certainly contributed, but standing next to Sam, who always seemed to know what to do next, she felt completely lost.
Most of the time, Sienna's role was simply to accompany Sam while he did the actual work. Although this occasionally put her under pressure, she managed to keep up.
What's even more difficult is keeping up with the pace set by Sam.
Every day after school, Sienna would meet up with Sam and then get busy with various tasks.
This could mean donning a uniform and operating alongside her other entourage while maintaining a thin veil of secrecy; it could mean endless paperwork to ensure everything is ready for a major event; or, worst of all, running from store to store, pleading with businesses to support a charity event.
They visited most of the shops that had paid them for protection, along with a dozen or so others. Sienna was somewhat overwhelmed by the people's generosity.
Businesses were willing to give Sienna (actually, it was mainly Sam) all sorts of things just so they could claim to have contributed to charity in their advertising.
Tables, chairs, refrigerators, portable stoves, a printing shop made some rather professional-looking banners for them, and a local bakery agreed to provide the cakes and muffins that would have been thrown away anyway.
Everything was going smoothly, but Sienna was exhausted.
Their schedules are insane. They work five or six hours a day, not including schoolwork, assignments, and taking care of their sisters.
By Friday, Sienna was exhausted, but she gritted her teeth and persevered without a word, because complaining would mean telling others that she didn't like something, which could ruin everyone's mood.
"Damn, I'm exhausted," Sam said, collapsing onto Sienna's sofa.
“Uh,” Sienna responded. She was wearing casual clothes now because, although her uniform was nice, it wasn’t comfortable to wear for more than an hour.
She was thinking of upgrading her and her sisters' uniforms sometime, but that would definitely cost a lot of money.
But she will soon receive a large sum of money... from the charity she has worked so hard to organize.
Sienna couldn't hold on any longer and collapsed onto the sofa opposite Sam. "I'm exhausted too," she weakly declared.
Sam chuckled. "Yeah, we're almost done. I'll send out some messages tonight."
Lucas is very good at computer-related things; he said he can post on forums and message boards. He plasters ads all over AceBooks and Youku, you know what I mean?
“I understand,” Sienna replied. She closed her eyes, tilted her head back high, and stared at the ceiling.
She heard a clanging sound coming from the kitchen and knew it was Trinity causing trouble, but she wasn't the one with the energy to deal with it right now.
“It’s Sunday, right?” she asked.
“Sunday,” Sam confirmed.
This is the best time to hold an event. More people are not at work or school.
If they choose to go early in the afternoon, around lunchtime, it's too early for people planning to go out to parties or do other things, coinciding with the lunch rush.
The plan was relatively simple. They would set up some decorations on a closed street that was usually used as a farmers' market. This street was only one block away from an elementary school, some of the oldest churches in Eau Claire, and a few good restaurants.
There are parks on both sides of the road. One park has gravel ground and a bunch of children's climbing frames, while the other park has a dozen or so old trees with several well-trodden paths between them.
If they have something that attracts crowds, this is definitely a great place to gather people...
Unfortunately, there was only one thing that could truly persuade ordinary people to come.
"So, have you practiced your signature?" Sam asked.
Sienna let out a groan. It was a bit of an exaggeration, but that's how she felt.
The entire event was promoted as a "charity autograph session for the heroes of Auclair." It was widely believed that they were raising funds to help rebuild shops damaged by "Rattlesnake" and to support the Hero Rescue Foundation.
The idea of designating two groups as beneficiaries of the charity was Liam's.
By claiming that the proceeds will be donated to two different groups, they can give less to both and then claim that it is not a 50/50 split.
"It's cunning," a small voice inside Sienna thought, both excited and shocked that she, a villain who was trying... well, trying not to be a bad guy, was trying to siphon money from the funds that were supposed to support local heroes.
“I’ll figure something out,” Sienna said. “A signature doesn’t have to be pretty, right?”
“You can do it like you would sign autographs for kids,” Sam said.
That was Chloe's idea. Mainly after she saw Teddy and Maple's signature.
Maple Leaf's handwriting is as if she's a "graffiti" PhD, and Teddy's signature is even less of a topic—the less said, the better.
Athena's "Owl Watcher" signature is quite nice. It's a cursive but clear and legible font, and she also likes to draw the letter "O" like a bird's eye. Trinity is actually a great artist. She likes to add some embellishments to her "Robber" signature, and it's usually quite cute and not aggressive.
So for Teddy and Maple, they quickly made a set of stamps engraved with their hero names. The stamp featured Ursa Minor, along with a hammer and sickle (which she insisted on adding). As for Maple… well, she didn't have a hero name before. After much discussion, deliberation, and several arguments, they finally settled on one.
"A friendly beaver!"
They even added some decorations to her seal, drawing the end of the word "beaver" as a beaver with two large front teeth.
This name is much better than some of the suggestions Sienna had to reject. "Dam Hammer" and "Bark Peeler" were terrible ideas from the start.
“I think I’ll just practice writing ‘boss’ dozens of times. It’s only four letters, how badly can I mess it up?” Sienna said.
She knew in her heart that she shouldn't be so lazy, but she was too tired at the moment to care about such things.
Then, a loud clanging sound startled her. The sound, of course, came from the kitchen. She sat up and exchanged a glance with Sam. Neither of them really wanted to check.
Trinity's laughter made them both stand up immediately, and Sienna's stomach clenched instantly.
“Trinity,” she said as she walked into the kitchen.
The scene before me was chaotic.
All her sisters were there, only a few of them seemed somewhat remorseful. Maple Leaf stared at the floor, while Athena slowly backed away, as if trying to slip away unnoticed.
Teddy and Trinity were caught red-handed. One of Trinity was holding an open bag of flour, and it was clear that she and Teddy had been pouring flour out handful by handful. A cloud of flour still lingered in the air.
"What are you doing?" Sienna asked.
“We’re doing a test!” Trinity said, tossing a handful of flour into the middle of the kitchen as if to demonstrate her point.
Sienna saw the flour disappear after touching something. Some flour floated into the air, and then... a pair of legs appeared on the ground, but nothing above that. At that moment, she couldn't help but wonder if Trinity was testing her patience.
“I’m not afraid of flour!” said an invisible Trinity, her hands slightly emerging from the air as if she were opening her arms.
Sienna pinched the bridge of her nose. "Whose idea was this?" she asked.
Teddy put a handful of flour back into the bag. “Uh,” she said, “it wasn’t me.”
“Don’t put the flour back in the bag,” Sienna complained.
Teddy blinked, then threw another handful of flour at the invisible Trinity.
This wasn't the outcome Sienna wanted either, but she decided to give up before she got too frustrated. "Uh, it was my idea," Maple whispered. "Sorry. We need to test if the invisibility cloak still works on airborne particles and things that might contaminate them."
"That's a pretty clever idea," Sam muttered to himself. "I mean, it'll kick up dust when they fight, right?"
"I saw it in an animated film," Maple Leaf said with more confidence.
Sienna pinched the bridge of her nose again. She decided that she definitely needed to take a break after this weekend.
