The socially awkward villain's furry superpower
Chapter 139 Pride breeds fear
Athena was very proud.
This pride doesn't just come from herself, although she is indeed quite proud of herself.
She was helping her older sister and the other sisters break into the base of some enemy villains, where they beat the villains up and tied them up.
What they're doing now is so villainous.
She was truly proud of her older sister. Sienna had grown up a lot since Athena was born.
At that time, Athena couldn't read minds, but she had the intelligence and keen observation of an owl, and she could tell—even though her less clever sisters couldn't—that Sienna didn't always want to be a villain.
Sometimes she acts more like a villain, plotting various schemes and commanding her henchmen like a proper villain leader. But at other times, Sienna worries about silly and unimportant things, such as caring about the law or wanting to send her sisters to school.
However, today is a big day for Sienna, and Athena is proud of her eldest sister.
“Ursa Minor, move forward,” the eldest sister said. She stood in the middle of the group, her back straight, her hat pulled back.
She looked like a complete villain, though perhaps she shouldn't have been at the forefront. Athena made sure to stay close by, just in case.
“Understood, Big Sister,” Teddy said in a low voice, moving into the corridor next to him. Trinity followed closely behind, one of them carrying a sock stuffed with stones, the other carrying a toaster rifle on her shoulder, holding a piece of bread in her free hand, and another between her lips.
“Glamour Girl, when we get to the next room, Bandit will be in charge of the breakthrough. Can you light up that room?” the older sister asked.
“I can do it,” said Charm Girl.
Athena wasn't sure if bringing this hero along was a wise move. She was just a show-off, an oddball.
If they were fighting the paparazzi, they might be able to use Charm Girl to distract them, but they're currently fighting a real villain, and having a hero by their side would only be a burden.
However, the eldest sister wanted her to come along for a few reasons. For example, having her along would make their actions seem more legitimate when they were pretending to be doing a heroic job by attacking another villain's base.
Athena understood, but she felt it was better to leave the Glamour Woman for later.
One look into Charm Girl's eyes is enough to tell that the girl is both scared and a little amazed.
They were afraid of the place they were in (which is rather sad, as Athena wasn't afraid at all, and she didn't have any superpowers to launch light spheres to protect herself), and amazed at how cool the eldest sister was acting at that moment.
When they arrived at a door at the end of the corridor and everyone took their places, Athena said, "The next room is quite large."
She didn't have much time to probe the thoughts of the henchmen they had captured, but she did have a general idea of the base's layout.
"How big is it?" the older sister asked.
"Hmm, it's quite big. There are stairs at the end, both going up and down. The stairs leading up lead to the control center, and Aleya Iakta's cell is downstairs. The other places on this floor are things like the restrooms and lounges."
"There should be a lot of cover in this room, and boxes and stuff like that. I think they also have a truck," Athena said.
"How does she know all this?" Charm Girl pointed at Athena and asked.
Athena snorted. "I know far more than you can imagine, Sparkle."
Charismatic Superwoman shrank back slightly, while Athena grinned. She loved it when people thought she was scary. It made her feel comfortable and warm, like when her eldest sister patted her head, or when she woke up snuggled up with all her sisters.
“If they have a car… is there an exit in this room?” the older woman asked.
Athena thought for a moment. This wasn't easy. Everyone thinks differently. Some people think through images, some through sounds, and most people think through a strange mix of all their senses.
She has read the thoughts of some people with extremely absurd thinking, and even among those with absurd thinking, each person's situation is different.
Trinity's mind is difficult to read because it's constantly filled with too many feelings, emotions, and images. Teddy's mind is much simpler. She sees something, draws a conclusion about it, and then moves on to something else.
The eldest sister, on the other hand, would scrutinize everything from thousands of angles, as if every small choice she made was incredibly important, and if she made the wrong one, everything would be in danger, and each choice was just as important as the last.
Athena thought that with more practice, her ability to read minds would become stronger, but for now, this matter was still quite tricky. "Hmm, I think there's a door."
One of the henchmen they had tied up had a peculiar way of thinking; his mind was filled with maps and room layouts. When it came to the location of things, everything in his mind was exceptionally clear, but at the same time, every room in his imagination was also filled with memories of what had happened in that space.
He had never walked through that door before, so his memory of it was vague. And since she wasn't reading his thoughts right now, it was more like recalling a memory, which made things even more complicated.
“Okay, then it’s some kind of loading and unloading area. Perhaps we can use that as our exit,” the older woman said.
“Aren’t we leaving the way we came in?” Charm Girl asked.
"I don't think it's necessary."
“Because we still have prisoners there. They might be untied and escape,” Charm Girl said.
Before Sienna made her decision, Athena could sense countless tense thoughts flashing through her mind. "It's alright. Our priority is rescuing our comrades; capturing the villains is secondary. Is everyone ready?"
“Wait,” Athena said. The older sister looked at her. “I think there’s a trap.”
"A trap?" the older sister asked.
Athena nodded. "In, uh, in the corridor we're going through. There seems to be... a turret or something. There's one in the corridor above too."
"How are they wired?" Maple asked.
Athena shrugged. She didn't know, and avoiding her sister's gaze, she told Maple Leaf the truth. Maple Leaf's way of thinking was quite frightening.
It's not that Maple Leaf herself is scary; she's probably the kindest of Athena's sisters. It's just that she has too many ideas in her head all the time, and many of them are baffling.
If the average person's thinking is like a distant billboard on a rainy day, then Maple Leaf's thinking is like having your eyes glued to the billboard, with a pair of constantly spinning kaleidoscopes in front of you.
“I don’t know,” Athena said finally. “They’re like, big boxes, with guns inside, and they can expand or something.”
"This...this is really bad," the older sister said. "Maple Leaf, will your...jatter work against those things?"
"It depends on whether those guns are the type that are susceptible to interference," Maple Leaf said.
“I can just charge straight at them and wait for them to run out of bullets,” Trinity suggested.
"This is too reckless," Charismatic Superwoman muttered to herself.
“Let’s clear out the next room first,” the older sister said, “and then see what we can do. Ursa Minor, it’s your turn. Maple Leaf, hurry up and get in too. Pay special attention to those who look threatening. Charm Girl, is your orb ready?”
“Please don’t… Yes, I’m ready,” said Charm Girl.
They arrived at the door, and everyone tensed up. Then Trinity slammed the door open, and Charm Girl quickly threw three glittering balls into the room.
The colorful ball exploded, and for a moment, Athena could only stare at the bright, dazzling light. Then she shook her head and refocused her attention.
Sometimes, Athena really wished she were a warrior like Teddy, so she could rush in and beat people up, helping them in that way instead of being stuck in the back.
Teddy roared into the room, followed by Trinity, who also roared, but with far less ferocity.
"Oh, there's someone here!" Trinity exclaimed. She picked up the toaster and, before anyone could stop her, started stuffing bread into the toaster's pan as she rushed into the room.
“Oh, no,” the older sister said.
The others rushed in and found the room in complete chaos. Several henchmen were hiding behind concrete barriers, hitting Teddy with wooden sticks, while more henchmen were at the other end of the room, apparently loading something onto a truck, which had been disrupted by the commotion.
Immediately afterward, a clear "ding" rang out, followed by the loud bang of the toaster firing. A slice of bread flew through the henchmen, punched a hole in the truck, and then passed through the cab. Trinity giggled.
Charismatic Supergirl threw out more orbs of light, and then Athena saw a henchman charging towards them with a long baton. She ran over laughing and headbutted the man in the stomach.
The man collapsed to the ground, and she jumped on top of him, staring at him. He looked worried. "I'm going to dig out all your secrets!" she shouted. Now, he was afraid.
This is the effect of Athena's skills!
