……
Sienna silently endured her mother's warm embrace, and as her mother showered her cheeks with kisses, she tightly closed her eyes.
Having finally managed to break free from her mother's embrace, she instinctively took a step back, crossing her arms tightly against her chest in an attempt to ward off the cold.
"So, um, this is it?" she asked softly, her gaze slowly sweeping over her parents.
My mother was short, and her daily attire was somewhat sloppy. The style of the dress she wore seemed to have been outdated by the late 1960s.
The father was tall with broad, thick shoulders. If it weren't for his dirty blond hair falling out prematurely and turning bald, he might have actually become a member of the hockey team.
"Do you remember our phone number?" The mother's voice was gentle and concerned.
Sienna nodded slightly and replied, "Yes, I remember."
The mother sighed softly, her eyes filled with reluctance, then pulled her into her arms and said, "If anything happens, remember to call us."
If you encounter any difficulties with your studies, or…” the mother said, chuckling softly, “if you fancy any boy, remember to tell Mom.”
As Sienna listened to her mother's words, she could vaguely hear the faint cracking sound of her father's knuckles.
She couldn't help but smile slightly, but she tried her best to suppress the smile that was about to spill out.
When Sienna was a child, making fun of her father was one of her favorite pastimes.
She knew in her heart that her father had once harbored a rather "ambitious" dream.
That means if any boy dares to treat her badly, she will give that boy a serious and solemn "admonitory talk".
Unfortunately, my high school years passed by in the blink of an eye, and such a thing never happened.
“I…” Sienna swallowed hard, her voice slightly choked, “I love you all.”
Upon hearing these words, the father's cold and resolute face softened for a moment, a faint smile appearing at the corners of his mouth before quickly returning to his usual serious demeanor.
Then, Sienna had to endure her parents' hugs one after another.
She slowly closed her eyes, silently praying to any god willing to listen, hoping that no one around her could see her slightly embarrassed state.
The thought of her father helping her carry her things while making all sorts of lame jokes with the boys made her feel incredibly embarrassed.
The feeling was so intense that she wanted to immediately bury her head under the covers.
Finally, the series of hugs ended, and her father gently patted her head.
Then, the familiar pickup truck at home started up and slowly drove away, leaving Sienna standing alone in the same spot.
This seemed to be the first time she had ever truly felt the taste of loneliness.
She slowly looked around, her gaze quietly fixed on the ancient stone buildings in the old campus.
These buildings have withstood the test of time and are gently surrounded by winding cobblestone paths.
Looking at the few hurried pedestrians around her, and then gazing up at the vast blue sky, Sienna couldn't help but shiver.
Sienna had heard many stories of girls being harassed and harmed on such schools.
She tried hard to avoid hearing these heartbreaking stories, trying to restrain herself and not wanting these messages to further aggravate her anxiety.
But those snippets of conversation she overheard were now haunting her mind like ghosts.
She subconsciously reached out and pulled her long pleated skirt down a little, making the hem hang lower until it almost touched her ankles, and then gently pulled down the hem of her sweater.
After doing all this, she slowly turned around, facing the direction of the dormitory, and then slowly started walking.
To be honest, she really doesn't like being outdoors if she can avoid it.
But upon closer reflection, she realized that she didn't actually enjoy staying indoors that much.
For Sienna, there are very few places where she can feel truly at ease and comfortable, at least none in this vicinity.
She struggled to suppress the urge to immediately pull out her phone and call her mother.
Her parents have made far too many sacrifices to ensure she could get into this school.
Her future largely depends on whether she can successfully pass all her courses through her own efforts.
Upon arriving at the dormitory, a large, eye-catching brass plaque above one's head clearly reads "Home of the Mothmans".
Is the Mothman the one I'm thinking of?
That's quite a strange name.
The dormitory building is very new, but the accommodation fee is a bit expensive. However, her father insisted that she live here.
The higher price has its advantages; she no longer needs to live with roommates and can have a relatively independent private space.
This put her and her father at ease.
Sienna took out her phone and swiped it lightly on the panel that extended to the side. The front door of the dormitory slowly opened.
She stepped inside, but as soon as she entered, she froze on the spot as if she had been frozen in place.
The dormitory lobby was cleverly divided into two different areas.
On one side is a small kitchen equipped with a mini-fridge and several microwave ovens, where students can easily prepare some food or store some drinks.
On the other side is a spacious and comfortable lounge, furnished with a large-screen TV, several soft and comfortable sofas, and several square tables, surrounded by benches.
Several brightly colored banners hung from the square ceiling, and a few colorful balloons floated in the air, creating a festive atmosphere.
Sienna roughly counted, and there were probably around thirty people.
They were all crammed into this not-so-large room, some of them holding red cups that looked like they contained drinks or something similar.
Others hold glass bottles without knowing what's inside.
The air was filled with a nauseatingly sweet smell, a unique blend of store-bought pastries, alcohol, and people's sweat.
The taste made Sienna's stomach churn, and she felt extremely uncomfortable.
"Hey!"
Suddenly, a clear, cheerful voice rang out. Sienna turned around quickly and saw a tall Black girl walking towards her with a broad smile. "You're from room 501, right?"
Sienna's mind seemed to go blank for a moment before she finally came to her senses. "5... Oh, my room number, yeah, that's right."
The girl's smile widened even more when she heard her answer.
She enthusiastically pointed to a table near the back, on which were a soda bottle and a cooler, and said, "Go get something to drink!"
We're holding a meet-and-greet here, which is also a celebration for 'Superpower Day'.
"Superpower Day." Sienna repeated unconsciously, then shook her head slightly, thinking to herself, "Of course, today is September 15th; I know that day." "Oh, right."
As the girl spoke, she switched the cup from one hand to the other, then extended her hand generously and said, "I'm Sam."
Sienna looked at the outstretched hand with some embarrassment.
She didn't really want to shake hands with the other person, but she was worried that not doing so would make her seem particularly rude.
She felt increasing pressure on her chest, as if a large rock was pressing down on it.
Only at the very end did she seem to suddenly make up her mind, abruptly reaching out and grasping Sam's hand, then shaking it somewhat stiffly as she said, "I am Sienna, I... uh, I'm going back to my room."
"If you want to come down and play, then come down," Sam said with a smile, his enthusiasm undiminished. "I can introduce you to everyone. Some of the boys are quite cute."
As she spoke, she playfully raised her eyebrows, then looked Sienna up and down with a slightly unsettling gaze. "Some girls are cute too," she added, winking as she did so.
"Okay, okay, I understand, thank you." Sienna said hurriedly and then quickly turned and left.
She looked as if she were being chased by a terrifying monster from a horror movie. She had accidentally seen such a movie before, and the tension of being chased seemed to have returned.
She walked quickly to the elevator at the back, and just as a young man who was pressing the "IV" button on the panel stepped into the elevator. "Which floor are you going to?" the young man asked.
Sienna took a few deep breaths to calm herself down and replied, "F5".
The young woman nodded and then gently pressed the "V" button on the elevator panel indicating her floor.
To Sienna's relief, the young man then took out his phone and started staring at the screen.
She glanced at the screen and saw some new articles about "Superpower Day" and how the local police chief would be searching for new villains.
But when the young man looked at her, she immediately looked away, feeling inexplicably nervous.
"Are you new here?" the young man asked.
Sienna opened her mouth, wanting to answer, but it was as if something was blocking her throat, and she couldn't speak for a long time.
She was rapidly performing complex social dynamics calculations in her mind, and after some struggle, she finally managed to utter a single "yes."
Just then, the elevator doors opened with a "ding," and the young man quickly stepped out.
Sienna swallowed again. Seeing that no one was paying attention to her, she shrank even smaller until the elevator reached her floor.
The hallway leading to her room flashed past her. She almost ran to her door, swiped her phone, and the door opened. She quickly slipped into her room.
This wasn't the kind of room that truly made her feel the warmth of home, but she still held onto a sliver of hope that one day it would become her real home.
Sienna had previously convinced her father to bring a pair of bookshelves and her favorite chair from home—an oversized plush chair made of faux leather, so big that she felt a little cramped sitting on it.
However, she could curl up on it, bend her legs underneath, and still have some space left, so it was quite comfortable.
The bed in the corner of the room was a spare single bed, much larger than the one she had at home.
She first glanced at the table in the room, then at the laptop charging in the corner, and then turned her gaze to the small bathroom.
Although the bathroom was a bit cramped, she only needed a small shower stall and the basic amenities provided.
Looking out of the room's window, she could see a small alley behind the building; for her, the room was good enough.
She locked the door, then slowly dragged herself to the bedside and let herself fall heavily onto it.
After regaining her social energy, she turned over and took her phone out of her pocket.
I browsed Writeit (which is probably a social media platform) and found that all the trending topics were about "Superpower Day".
People are placing bets on this platform, eagerly anticipating the appearance of new hero faces.
She quickly browsed through several topics titled "What if this happened to you?" and found a webpage full of cute animal pictures.
If people are her nemesis, then those photos of kittens, foxes, and dogs are like... well, things that make her feel a little better.
Aside from the part of her brain that, as usual, kept exclaiming "Wow!" as she browsed through each picture, the rest was thinking about other things.
She is now all alone, without a mother to turn to at any time, and without a father who can solve all her big problems.
At this moment, she had only herself.
The course will begin tomorrow morning.
She didn't know how to describe her feelings about the upcoming course, but she decided to simply categorize them as fear.
As the tension intensified, she put down her phone and jumped out of bed.
The animated GIFs of kittens being frightened by tinfoil no longer held any appeal for her.
Sienna sighed helplessly, then took off her clothes, only to find that there was no basket for clothes in the room.
So she had no choice but to fold her clothes again, put them by the bed, and then put on a set of pajamas with a walrus pattern, preparing to lie down and rest.
Sienna knew she wouldn't fall asleep anytime soon, but that was fine; after all, there were always cute animals on the internet to see.
When she can't sleep, she can continue browsing online for content that might cheer her up a little.
Finally, despite the bright evening sun still shining through the window, Sienna slowly blinked one last time before drifting into a restless sleep.
