Chapter 63 Preparation
"Sir, the man is here." A man in black rushed in from outside, slightly out of breath, and whispered to the people inside the room.
"Who is it?" The man sat in the luxurious chair, frowning impatiently, his wine glass swirling slightly in his hand, his voice revealing obvious displeasure.
"Butler," the man in black continued cautiously, a hint of nervousness in his voice.
"Butler? What butler?" The man looked at him with even more confusion, his brows furrowed. He was clearly annoyed by this kind of behavior of only saying half of what he meant. Couldn't this guy just finish what he was saying?
“The Chloe family's butler,” the man in black quickly added, hoping to quell the man's anger.
"Oh, oh, it's that dog." The man suddenly realized, his expression softening slightly. He then stood up, took a few steps forward, patted the man in black on the shoulder, and said in a cold, hard tone, "Next time, explain yourself clearly. Do you want me to guess?"
After speaking, the man looked down at the man in black with a cold gaze, his eyes like sharp blades, sending chills down one's spine.
The man in black was so frightened by the man's imposing manner and sudden sternness that his heart pounded. He immediately knelt down, his body going limp with fear, cold sweat pouring down his forehead.
The atmosphere in the room instantly became oppressive and tense, with only the man's cold gaze wandering in the air, as if searching for the next target to vent his anger on.
"Yes, yes, sir," the man in black stammered, his voice trembling, and he quickly began to admit his mistake.
"Get lost, and bring that dog over here." The man waved his hand, his tone revealing contempt and impatience for the person about to arrive.
"Yes, yes, yes." The man in black was relieved and quickly got up from the ground. He didn't dare to look back and stumbled back towards the door, afraid of angering the capricious master again.
"Damn it, if we didn't need manpower right now, would you still be alive?" The man looked at the disheveled figure of the man in black and sneered to himself, his words full of disdain and mockery. "You want me to guess? You think I'm a smart aleck?"
Upon hearing this, the man in black outside staggered involuntarily and almost fell.
His heart was filled with bitterness and helplessness. Wasn't this the only person they had contacted during this period? Where were the others? Did this need explaining?
But adults' thoughts are always hard to fathom, so what could he do? He could only act cautiously, trying his best not to offend the adult and save his own life.
...
"Oh, head butler, what brings you here?" The man stepped forward, a fake smile on his face, seemingly delighted by the butler's arrival.
"I've come to see how the preparations are going," the butler said coldly, his eyes revealing distrust and disgust towards these people.
He wasn't familiar with them, and he even resented associating with them, but he had no choice. The Duke needed them, and they were indeed a sharp knife, capable of accomplishing some necessary but dishonorable tasks.
"Don't worry, everything is ready." The man answered crisply, seemingly confident in the upcoming plan.
"That's good." The butler nodded, his expression remaining indifferent, without much emotional fluctuation.
"His Excellency the Duke said to wait until after the competition before taking action," the butler continued, his tone carrying an undeniable air of authority.
"Why?" The man frowned, clearly puzzled by the change in plans.
“Making a move during a competition would make us too conspicuous, and the royal family would send people,” the butler explained. He knew the man before him was impulsive and reckless, so he had to explain in detail to prevent him from making any foolish decisions.
"Understood." The man pondered for a moment, seemingly weighing the pros and cons, then asked, "What do we want?"
Upon hearing the man's question, the butler nodded slightly and said, "Don't worry, everything is ready. There won't be any problems."
"That's good." The man responded, a hint of satisfaction flashing in his eyes. It's just a delay, it's not like he can't wait.
"Remember, do it after the match." Before leaving, the butler turned back and solemnly instructed him, his gaze like a sharp arrow, trying to pierce the man's defenses and ensure that his words were remembered.
The man squinted, his gaze fixed on the butler, a faint smile playing on his lips, but he didn't respond, seemingly preoccupied with his own plans.
The butler, too lazy to argue with him any further, had long been accustomed to their attitude and turned to leave. For him, every second he stayed there felt unsettling, as if even the air was suffocating him.
"What are you pretending for!" The man watched the butler's departing figure, curled his lip in disdain, and muttered to himself in a low voice, his tone clearly sarcastic and impatient.
The butler, who was walking outside, seemed not to have heard the words, or rather, he deliberately ignored them. He did not stop walking; instead, he quickened his pace, wanting only to leave this uncomfortable environment as soon as possible.
"Sir, what should we do?" the man in black asked cautiously, his voice filled with a hint of awe. He dared not be negligent in the slightest.
"Wait until after the match before making a move." The man repeated the butler's instructions, his tone revealing an unwavering determination.
"Yes, yes, yes." The man in black nodded hurriedly, not daring to ask any more questions. He knew in his heart that it was best to say less and do more now, because if he angered the man again, the consequences would be something he could not bear.
"Why don't you ask me?" The man turned his head, his gaze falling on the man in black beside him, and suddenly spoke, his tone tinged with a hint of mockery.
"Huh?" The man in black was taken aback, raising his head in confusion, wondering what he should ask. In front of an adult, was there anything he could ask casually?
"Why should we listen to that butler?" the man said with a half-smile, seemingly testing the man in black's intelligence.
"My lord has his reasons, which are beyond my comprehension," the man in black quickly flattered, knowing that in this situation, showing absolute obedience and respect to his superior was the wisest choice.
"Hmm, not bad, a promising young man." The man nodded in satisfaction, and patted the man in black on the shoulder, seemingly pleased with his answer.
"I must say, although he's a dog, he's a loyal and good dog," the man commented, revealing a certain degree of approval for the butler.
Although the man in black didn't quite understand the deeper meaning of the man's words, he knew that all he needed to do was nod in agreement; the deeper meaning was not his concern.
"Yes, yes, yes, you're right, sir." The man in black quickly agreed, not daring to hesitate for a moment.
"Alright, get out of here. Go and prepare properly." The man waved his hand, looking somewhat impatient.
"Yes." The man in black responded and took his leave, quickly disappearing from the man's sight.
"Sigh, how boring." The man muttered to himself, watching the departing figure of the man in black.
