All-around teacher at the magic academy
Chapter 12 Chapter 1 Lesson
It's already Thursday before we knew it.
Leon got up early today, even though he stayed up until midnight last night. But there was no other way; today was Leon's first teaching class, and he needed to prepare properly.
Leon's class was scheduled for 3 p.m. today, so he decided to go and observe other teachers' classes this morning.
Although he had prepared the content he would teach today, he still decided to learn from how other teachers teach and how students listen to them.
"I didn't expect Professor Lian's class to be so popular."
When Leon saw today's class schedule, he couldn't help but sigh. Ms. Lian, who was also a newly hired first-grade teacher like Leon, was originally scheduled to teach on Mondays, and only had one class a week.
However, after Monday's class, the students really liked Mr. Lian's teaching style and gave a very strong response, so the school arranged another class for Mr. Lian today.
Leon also saw Professor Vic's class schedule on the timetable, and surprisingly, Professor Vic also had two classes scheduled. It seems that although his attitude wasn't very good, his academic level was still very high, and he was well-liked by many students.
He planned to attend a trial class taught by Professor Lian. "Hmm, 7:50, I can still make it there if I go now."
Leon checked the time; there were still 10 minutes before class, which was plenty of time for him.
However, when Leon arrived at the classroom door, he was stunned. He hadn't expected that the classroom would be almost full of people even though it wasn't time for class.
The college, knowing that Professor Lian's teaching was popular, arranged a large classroom large enough to accommodate over a hundred students. However, it seems they underestimated the students' enthusiasm.
Leon looked at the few remaining seats and found a corner seat in the last row, intending to play the role of a student for once.
Class time arrived quickly, and the classroom was packed with students; not a single seat was available. Those who couldn't find seats left the classroom disappointed, hoping they could come earlier next time.
Teacher Lian's lessons mainly focused on elven magic, such as summoning various elemental spirits. She demonstrated in class how to communicate with the spirits and obtain their assistance.
"Teacher Lian is so beautiful. She's good-looking, speaks so sweetly, and is even charming when she's lecturing."
Leon heard a boy next to him say excitedly.
"Teacher Lian is indeed very beautiful, and her lectures are very interesting."
"Right, you think so too?"
The student became interested upon hearing Leon's words.
"I think most of the students who come to listen to Professor Lian's lectures think this way."
Leon looked around and saw that most of the students were male. It seemed that Mr. Lian was quite charming.
"Of course! Professor Lian is my goddess!"
"She's my goddess!"
"No, she is our common goddess."
Leon listened to the argument among the male students next to him and remained silent for a moment.
“I think if you keep arguing like this, Professor Lean might get angry,” Leon warned.
Upon hearing Leon's words, the boys quickly looked towards the podium, only to find that Professor Lian was watching them. They immediately lowered their heads shyly, avoiding eye contact with Professor Lian.
"Please don't talk during class, or I'll have to ask them to leave!"
Lian looked in the direction of Leon and the boys, and said with a smile.
"It's been discovered."
Seeing Ms. Lean's expression, Leon knew she had noticed that he was pretending to be a student listening to her lesson.
...
The class passed quickly, and Leon greatly appreciated Ms. Lian's teaching. Most of the students in the class shared the same sentiment, feeling they wanted more. After all, who wouldn't want to be taught by a beautiful teacher?
"If I had been in school with Mr. Lean lecturing like this, I think my grades wouldn't have been so bad," Leon thought to himself.
"See you next class, Ms. Lian." The students said goodbye to her respectfully.
"Goodbye."
Leon watched as Mr. Lian bid farewell to his students, but did not disturb him. Instead, he quietly left through the back door.
"Professor Leon, please wait a moment. Why are you walking so fast? You didn't even wait for me."
After Leon left, Lean's voice sounded from behind.
"Seeing how enthusiastic the students are, I don't plan to bother Professor Leon any longer. Your lectures are truly fascinating; if I were a student, I would definitely attend every single one of your classes," Leon said earnestly.
"Thank you for your compliment, Professor Leon. I just didn't expect you to come, and even sit with the students," Professor Leon couldn't help but tease.
"Haha, sorry, Ms. Lian, I had a little argument with a few students during class. They were all saying that you are not only beautiful, but also so elegant in your teaching."
Leon remembered that he and those boys had interrupted Professor Lean's speech during class, so he quickly explained.
"I'm really happy that you came to my class, but it's surprising that you like to make these kinds of jokes just like the students."
"Professor Leon, this is your first lesson this afternoon, right?"
"Yes, to be honest, I was quite nervous, afraid that I wouldn't be able to give the students a good impression."
"I'm really looking forward to Professor Leon's class!"
...
In the afternoon, Leon arrived at his private office early, a little while before class. He didn't plan to go early; he felt it would be awkward to go to the classroom before class started, and he guessed the students felt the same way.
The school bell rang, and Leon, holding his prepared materials, walked into the classroom just in time. The previously noisy atmosphere became much quieter because of Leon's arrival.
Leon felt all the students' eyes on him and suddenly felt a little nervous. He looked at the students below the stage and gave a brief self-introduction.
"Hello everyone, I am your teacher for this class, Leon Gurn. This is my first time teaching, and I hope you will all be kind to me."
Leon noticed that Mr. Lian was smiling at him from the audience, and he felt a little embarrassed.
There weren't many students in this class, only about thirty, but that was alright. After all, it was my first time teaching, and the classroom wasn't very big, so at least it didn't look too shabby.
"Before I begin my lecture, I would like to ask you all a question: How is magic released?"
He didn't intend to start the lecture right away, but instead asked a question that was relevant to all magicians.
Leon's question sparked a discussion among the students, but he didn't interrupt their exchange. On the contrary, he felt that encouraging students to think more deeply would teach them more than he could teach them himself, and it would also stimulate their creativity.
"Is there any student who can answer this question? If they answer correctly, I will give them an extra credit."
Credits are very important at St. Peter's College. Each semester, students must earn a certain number of credits. This is a strict rule, and each student can only earn a maximum of 7 credits from one teacher. Therefore, Leon's words are quite tempting for the students.
He looked at the students sitting below the stage, and one student raised his hand. Leon gestured for him to answer.
"Teacher, I think the reason why magic can be released is because of magic circles. Magicians release different magic by constructing different magic circles."
Leon nodded, acknowledging his statement. "That's right, but have you ever considered how the magic circle was obtained?"
"Yes, we learn it. Isn't it through learning that we practice casting spells using different magic circles?"
"What I mean is, how did the original magic circle come about?"
Leon's question stumped the student. "Please sit down, your answer is already very good."
He praised the student generously, because it was a good answer; Leon felt that few people would think about this question.
"I'd like to ask you all another question: Do you think it's possible to cast magic without creating a magic circle?"
This time, the students' answers were all the same: no.
Leon smiled and said, "Perhaps in the future you will be able to cast spells without constructing magic circles."
He didn't intend to explain anything, but decided to start with a riddle to pique the students' interest.
Leon himself was able to cast spells without constructing a magic circle, and he believed that the first generation of magicians definitely did not need to construct magic circles.
The reason magic circles later appeared was most likely because they not only made it easier for later learners to learn, but also made casting magic simpler. Without needing to think too much, one could simply practice different magic circles to cast specific spells.
Of course, magic circles are not easy to construct. If they were, there wouldn't be so few mages, let alone powerful ones. The more powerful the magic, the more complex its magic circle.
However, Leon felt that this would lead to a decrease in creativity in magic, because most people would choose to learn according to the circuits of magic circles without thinking more deeply.
"In the future, my classes will not directly teach you how to construct different magic circles; you can learn those from other teachers. I will only teach you the principles of casting different spells."
Leon explained his teaching plan to the students, which once again sparked discussion among them.
"Alright, let's get down to business now. We can't keep discussing this, or we won't be able to cover anything in this lesson. Students with questions can discuss them after class." He interrupted the conversation at the appropriate time.
"Today, we'll talk about the principles of fire elemental magic. Everyone, how do you think fire comes about?" Leon drew a fire symbol on the blackboard and asked the students again.
No one answered, and Leon felt quite embarrassed. Had no one thought carefully about how it came about?
Just as Leon was about to explain himself, a classmate raised his hand. Leon saw him and couldn't help but praise him in his heart: "No wonder it's Harvey, he really cares about the teacher's feelings."
"Okay, Harvey, you answer this."
