Chapter 83 Marching into the Underworld

Pushkin glanced back worriedly, then whispered to Agred for confirmation, "Can we win?"

Agreed gave an ambiguous answer: "That depends on how capable the leader is. To be honest, I'm not very confident about fighting on someone else's home turf."

Milton then changed the subject, pointing to the entrance and shouting, "You two, don't talk about what happens next, let's think of a way to move this boulder."

Agreed scoffed dismissively, "What's so difficult about that?" Then, Agreed activated nature magic, and the boulder transformed into an earth elemental guardian that respectfully stood up and made way for the crowd.

The entrance to the underground world was so narrow that it could only allow two people to enter side by side, so Agreed told everyone to abandon their horses and walk into the underground world.

Upon seeing the scale of the passage, Pushkin couldn't help but complain, "Why is the exit designed to be so small?"

Agreed explained, “Mindflayers are humanoid creatures about our size, and their reproductive methods mean they can’t have a large population, so such entrances and exits are actually very safe for them.”

Milton then suggested, "Why don't we use earth elemental magic to create a massive earthquake and bury this underground city completely? It would solve the problem once and for all, and prevent our soldiers from dying in vain."

Argreed shook his head and denied it, saying, "Impossible. As subterranean creatures, their dwellings are mostly highly resistant to earthquakes. Besides, the size of the underground city is hard to say. We don't have any forbidden spell mages. If any escapees get through or we just force them to relocate, that would be even more troublesome. Our best option now is to go in and kill them."

Pushkin worriedly said, "They won't be waiting for us at the cave entrance, will they? This narrow passage is truly impregnable."

Agreed shrugged and said, "Who knows? Let me go first. I'll go in and check if it's safe before you come in." With that, Agreed picked up his staff and strode inside. Pushkin immediately followed, as he was worried about Agreed taking the risk alone. Milton, meanwhile, led his troops to wait outside in support.

Agreed's staff emitted a white light like a flashlight, illuminating the path ahead. The two carefully descended the stairs when a round, polished boulder hurtled towards them, intending to destroy them along with the stairs. Agreed reacted swiftly, instantly casting the seventh-tier spell 'Multiple Rock Barrier'. Six massive, thick rock walls rose from the ground, blocking the boulder. The boulder collided with the rock walls, and the rock walls narrowly intercepted the boulder.

Just then, a mind flayer with an octopus head above was about to unleash its psionic power to continue its attack when its body suddenly became uncontrollable, as if it were being held hostage by a strange force. It turned out that Agreed had already discovered it, and just as it was about to continue causing trouble, Agreed directly intervened and used 'Blood Coagulation Mastery' to control the cunning mind flayer.

Afterwards, Agreed casually cast the fourth-tier spell 'Magic Arrow', a magic missile composed of pure magic power that instantly blasted the mind flayer to pieces. Agreed had originally intended to spare its life to gather information about the underground city, but after thinking about it, he abandoned the idea. The mind flayer's location was too awkward; it would be difficult for Agreed to approach and subdue it. Just in case, it was better to kill it directly, since there was more than one monster here.

After eliminating the enemy, Pushkin cautiously inquired, "Are there any other enemies?"

After Agreed used his perception magic to confirm that there wasn't a single living creature within a one-kilometer radius, he nodded and said, "It's safe here. Let them in." With that, Agreed handed Pushkin a communication magic scroll.

Pushkin then tore open the scroll and told those above to come down. Because the passage was too narrow, it took the whole group quite a while to enter the underground world. After everyone had arrived, Pushkin ordered them to head towards the place where the mind flayers lived.

A massive force of 40,000 men launched a general offensive against the Mind Flayers' stronghold, but before they could even get close, they encountered a monster army of ghouls and zombies sent by the Mind Flayers to deal with them.

Ghouls are a malevolent race that feeds solely on corpses and are a typical subterranean race. They originated from humans, whose ancestors' persistent habit of consuming only human flesh gradually transformed them into horrifying, beast-like humanoid creatures. Despite their terrifying appearance, they possess sufficient intelligence to converse with humans; however, no ghoul has ever initiated conversation with a human—after all, who would actively talk to their food?

Ghouls themselves aren't particularly scary in combat. Their ugly appearance and horde-like behavior are indeed frightening, but what you really need to watch out for are their claws and teeth. Their habits leave their teeth and claws covered in bacteria and viruses. At first, you might not feel bad if you get hurt by them, but as time goes on, you'll find yourself getting weaker and weaker, then contracting various diseases until you die.

Human troops are actually very reluctant to clash with these disgusting monsters. After all, who would want their troops to be infected with the plague, especially during marches and battles? If a conflict occurs with ghouls, the troop commanders will have to make a difficult decision: to kill and burn all the wounded to prevent the plague from spreading in the troops.

Add to that the zombies, and you can imagine how disgusting this monster army would be to humans. Instantly, unrest broke out within Agred's troops. Nobody wanted to be bitten by these monsters. Just like in the zombie movies you watch, zombies are actually no match for humans in terms of combat power, but the terrifying contagiousness of the virus makes you not even want to fight them. It's like how a venomous snake is much more terrifying than an elephant in the eyes of humans.

Looking at the soldiers trembling like leaves, Agreed shook his head helplessly. The ragtag army that had been hastily assembled was indeed no good. With such a mixed quality of soldiers, negative emotions could easily spread to others, greatly damaging the morale of the troops.

In order to prevent the army from collapsing completely before reaching the Mind Flayer's lair, Agreed disregarded the need to conserve mana and took out his staff to attack. Agreed instantly cast 'Frost Ring' to surround all the enemies, and at the same time, he cast the eighth-tier magic Thunder Pool again and threw it into the monster horde.

The ghouls and zombies were instantly struck down by the exploding lightning, but the ice wall surrounding them was also shattered. Agred immediately followed up with three fire spells: 'Chain Fireballs', 'Wildfire', and 'Hellfire Wall', roasting the ghouls and zombies until they were fully cooked. Finally, Agred used the seventh-tier light magic 'Radiant Purification' to completely annihilate any monsters that might still be alive.

After dealing with the enemy, Agreed immediately turned around and shouted to everyone, "Everyone, get up there and smash those monsters' heads to make sure there are no survivors, then continue towards the Mind Flayer's stronghold!"
