Chapter 24 The Ended Battle

The Eye of Annihilation was dead, and the sandstorm it brought began to subside. The swirling storm began to dissipate, revealing Li Xin standing majestically at the center of the storm.

"Sir, the sandstorm has subsided," a soldier said to Su Lie, awaiting his instructions.

Previously, due to the obstruction of the sandstorm, the Great Wall Guards were very passive and powerless, and many brothers had already died in battle. If this continued, the Great Wall might really be breached by these demons. This was the most frustrating battle he had fought since joining the Great Wall Guards. They would bear the great shame of the Great Wall being breached for the first time since the establishment of the Tang Empire. But now that obstacle was gone, and he longed to fight back.

"Then let's attack with all our might, deliver a crushing blow! Archers, provide cover for us!" Su Lie shouted, shaking off a demon that was blocking his way.

"Shen Mengxi, use your explosives to clear a path for us! Let's welcome our hero!"

He had already guessed that someone had defeated the Eye of Annihilation, which created the sandstorm.

The volley of arrows rained down, driving back the numerous demons, leaving them riddled with wounds and bleeding profusely.

"Alright, watch my invincible bombs!" Standing on the Great Wall, Shen Mengxi excitedly threw out cat-shaped bombs one after another. The bombs slowly lined up in a straight line in the air, and with great power, they shattered hordes of demons. Blood splattered everywhere. His heart was filled with excitement. His dream had always been to win one victory after another and protect the Great Wall.

"Rush!!!"

On the battlefield a hundred meters in front of the Great Wall, the sandstorm that had obscured their vision disappeared. The soldiers of the Great Wall Guard were no longer timid. They brandished their weapons, shouted loudly, and fought fiercely against the attacking demons to avenge their fallen brothers and comrades. Covered in blood, their swords tore through the flesh of the demons. The raging demons would also take the lives of some of them, but they were fearless, only wanting to repel the invaders and avenge their sacrifices.

The situation on the battlefield suddenly turned one-sided, and the demons began to retreat in defeat.

……

"Mulan, it seems we're late." Cain, who arrived late, said to Mulan beside him, "Li Xin actually took down the Eye of Annihilation all by himself, amazing, amazing."

Does this mean I've gained some kind of power?

Cain thought to himself as he looked at Li Xin, who had changed so much.

"Anyone can be as good as someone who can eliminate the enemy attacking the Great Wall," Mulan said casually. "You're quite good. I knew I hadn't misjudged you."

"..."

Li Xin didn't speak. The golden light dissipated from his body, revealing his original appearance as a black-haired youth. He staggered and fell down. The powerful new force impacted his body, making it unbearable for him. He needed to rest.

"Hey, Li Xin, are you alright?" Cain quickly helped Li Xin up as he was about to fall, and asked with concern.

"No, it's nothing, I'm just a little tired..." Li Xin said softly. He felt his eyelids getting heavier and heavier, and a heavy weariness washed over him.

"Then you should rest well, you've worked hard." Cain carried the tired Li Xin on his back, then turned to Hua Mulan and said, "Let's go back to the Great Wall first, he's a great hero of ours."

Just then, Cain suddenly felt the ground tremble slightly. Cain and Mulan looked warily toward the sound, thinking that some giant demon had arrived.

What came into view was a large group of Great Wall garrison soldiers rushing towards Cain. After defeating all the demons, they were heading this way. Leading them was Su Lie. Each of them was covered in blood, but their faces were adorned with smiles of victory, happy to have once again defended the Great Wall.

"They're there! They killed the Eye of Annihilation! They're the heroes who defended the Great Wall!" someone shouted, and the crowd erupted in cheers, surging towards Cain and his group. Even Su Lie, who had been leading the way, was swallowed up by the crowd, which surged toward Cain.

"Mulan, this is getting a bit dangerous with so many people. There's no need for such enthusiasm," Cain said to Mulan beside him, watching the approaching Great Wall Guards. But Mulan was nowhere to be seen. "Hey? Why did you leave me behind and run off without me?!"

Unfortunately, before Cain could make a move, the surging tide of the Great Wall Guards had already engulfed him, and he and Li Xin were lifted up by the crowd.

"Oh, heroes of the Great Wall! Heroes! Heroes!" The crowd tossed Cain and Li Xin into the air and caught them, cheering loudly.

"I'm not a hero, put me down! Ugh, I'm afraid of heights!!!"

But no one heard what Cain said; his words were drowned out by the cheers of the crowd.

Li Xin, who was fast asleep, was awakened by the loud noise. He looked at the cheering crowd tossing him around, his eyes filled with complex emotions.

It wasn't until Su Lie caught up that the chaotic group was brought back into order.

……

The bright moon hangs high in the starry sky, radiating a faint, warm glow.

Tonight, the bonfires on the Great Wall burn brighter than ever before. Some people stand on the Great Wall, keeping watch and observing intently, while others hold a celebratory party below.

"Mmm...good water. We've defended the Great Wall once again today. It's truly delightful." A man with a long beard held a bowl of water and gulped it down like he was drinking wine, striking a pose of blissful enjoyment.

Soldiers on the frontier were not allowed to drink alcohol in order to remain vigilant against invaders. When celebrating success, they could only drink water or tea instead of alcohol, but this did not diminish their joy at the moment.

"Hahaha, Old Zhang, you drunkard, you even drink water like it's wine, it's hilarious!" A bald, burly man laughed heartily, pointing at the bearded man.

"You have the nerve to talk back to me, Wang Guangtou? Your drinking problem is even worse than mine. You always go to bed looking like you've been drinking." Old Zhang said irritably.

"There's nothing I can do. To protect the Great Wall, I can only drink in my dreams."

"Of course, to protect the Great Wall, I would rather drink only water than touch alcohol."

"Hahaha..." The two looked at each other and laughed.

Everyone was sitting around a campfire when they saw the black-haired youth slowly approaching, and they immediately gathered around him.

"Ah, our protagonist has arrived! Come, come, you can't be absent, great hero, is there anything you want to say?"

Everyone looked at Li Xin expectantly, hoping he would say something about this victory.

Li Xin became the focus of attention in this battle, slaying the Eye of Annihilation and being promoted to centurion, earning the respect of the soldiers.

“I…” Li Xin looked at the faces of these Great Wall guards, their sincere feelings, their trusting eyes. Many eyes had looked at him before, with all sorts of thoughts trying to climb up to him, but these pure eyes gave Li Xin a different feeling.

“I didn’t understand before, but I do now. It’s not just me; you are all heroes, as are those who died. Everyone who guarded the Great Wall is a hero. It is because of you that the ancient Great Wall still stands today,” Li Xin said slowly.

The crowd fell silent, then erupted in enthusiastic cheers: "Well said! Those who guarded the Great Wall are all comrades-in-arms, all heroes. You are the best hero."

The crowd gathered around Li Xin and the campfire, drinking water, eating roasted meat, and talking about their heroic, ordinary, or sad past experiences.

Standing atop the Great Wall, Cain smiled slightly as he observed all of this. The Great Wall, with its vast and tolerant embrace, welcomed every person with a story to tell.
