Bright Sword: Conquer the monk at the beginning and take down Zhou Weiguo
Chapter 401: It May Be a Bait
Almost instantly, gunshots ripped through the silence of the woods. Qin Cang's first shot had accurately hit its target, sending the enemy sprawling before a sound. At the same moment, flames spurted from Xiao Hu's gun, and another enemy, clutching his chest, stumbled twice before collapsing.
The third enemy reacted quickly, rolled over and hid behind a big tree. The bullet flew past Liu San's cover, splashing a cloud of mud.
"There is another one!" Liu San hurriedly fired to suppress the attack, and the shell ejected from the barrel with a clanging sound.
Qin Cang took advantage of the situation and stood up, his eyes locked on the enemy's bunker. He quickly adjusted his position, moving close to the tree trunk. His footsteps still ached slightly from his wound, but he forced himself to ignore the pain. Leaves brushed lightly against his shoulders, and each step he took was silent.
The enemy seemed to sense danger and raised his gun to fire, but Qin Cang got there first. He pulled the trigger, and the bullet accurately penetrated the half of the enemy's exposed figure.
With one last muffled groan, the forest finally returned to calm. Liu San wiped the sweat from his forehead and twitched his lips, "Done?"
"It's done for now." Qin Cang's tone was calm, but a sense of fatigue was revealed. He glanced at his blood-stained right foot and gritted his teeth secretly, "We can't stay here for too long. There may be other enemies coming to check on the situation."
Xiaohu came out from behind the tree, panting, and said, "Captain Qin, is there anything we can use on those people? Or perhaps we can find more clues?"
Qin Cang was silent for a moment, and finally nodded: "Search, but quickly. Be careful."
The three of them quickly split up and began to examine the bodies of the fallen enemies. Qin Cang searched the first enemy who fell and found a neatly folded piece of paper in his pocket.
"Another note." Qin Cang frowned. He unfolded the note and found a few simple markings on it, which seemed to be some kind of coordinates or route map. Various possibilities flashed through his mind, but he still couldn't be sure of the true meaning of this information.
"What on earth is this..." He whispered to himself, a hint of hesitation in his eyes, "Is it a message from the enemy, or..."
"Captain Qin, have you found anything?" Liu San's voice came from behind.
Qin Cang put the note away, his tone calm but with a hint of seriousness: "We found something, but we don't have time to interpret it now. Evacuate first, and study it later."
Liu San and Xiao Hu both nodded. They knew that Qin Cang's judgment was never wrong. The danger in this forest far exceeded their expectations, and those notes and markings seemed to hide a greater conspiracy.
Qin Cang and Liu San swiftly made their way through the dense forest. The cool moonlight cast dappled shadows between the interwoven tree shadows, adding a hazy, almost indistinct quality to their figures. Their movements were light and swift, avoiding the creaking dead branches and heavy fallen leaves. Neither of them spoke, their tacit understanding ensuring the absence of further words.
Along the way, Liu San couldn't help but glance back, observing Qin Cang's expression. He noticed that, despite appearing calm, the injury to his right foot seemed more serious than expected. His steps were no longer as brisk and smooth as before, but rather a bit heavier. Liu San's heart skipped a beat, and he secretly debated whether to speak up and remind him, but he was afraid of irritating Qin Cang.
"Liu San, you're taking too long." Qin Cang suddenly spoke coldly, his voice low but revealing an unquestionable sense of oppression.
"No... Captain Qin, I was just thinking about your injured foot..." Liu San explained softly, a hint of worry in his voice, "How about we find a place to stop and rest for a while before..."
"No need to waste time." Qin Cang interrupted directly, his tone as sharp as a knife, "We can't catch up now. When the enemy comes to their senses, they will chase us back. By then, we will die even faster."
Liu San was choked and stunned, but he knew in his heart that Qin Cang was right. He looked at Qin Cang's stern profile, feeling both admiration and helplessness. He couldn't help but wonder, how could this guy be so desperate? Is he really not afraid of death at all?
Despite his doubts, Liu San said nothing more. He gritted his teeth and quickened his pace to catch up with Qin Cang. They continued along the path through the forest, taking each step carefully but not daring to stop.
Ahead, a patch of low bushes blocked the way. Qin Cang suddenly stopped and raised his hand to signal Liu San to stop. Liu San braked suddenly, his whole body almost touching the ground, his eyes scanning the surroundings vigilantly.
"There's something going on up ahead." Qin Cang said in a low voice, a cold glint in his eyes. "Did you hear that? Someone's moving."
Liu San listened carefully and indeed heard faintly the rustling of leaves, as if someone was stepping on dead branches, but the sound was deliberately lowered.
"How many people?" Liu San asked softly, his breathing slowing down a bit.
Qin Cang didn't answer immediately. He stared intently ahead, his gaze sharp as an eagle's. His ears picked up the subtle changes in voices, the rhythm of footsteps, the weight and frequency. He silently calculated and whispered, "About three or four, about fifty meters away, approaching us."
"Should we just kill them?" Liu San clenched his gun tightly, a hint of excitement flashing in his eyes. He thought, since there weren't many of them, they could be eliminated in an ambush, clean and efficient.
"Too risky." Qin Cang shook his head and quickly rejected it. "They might be bait. The enemy wouldn't send a few people alone to wander around this area. There might be an ambush behind them."
Liu San was stunned for a moment, his heart sinking slightly. He had to admire Qin Cang's caution and calmness, but the feeling of being deep in the enemy camp was really making his scalp tingle. He lowered his voice and asked, "What should we do? Should we just wait like this?"
"No, let's go around it." Qin Cang whispered. He pointed to a low area next to the bushes. "Go over there, keep your body low, and try not to be discovered by them."
The two quickly adjusted their route, crouching and sneaking towards the low ground. Qin Cang walked in front, his movements light and graceful. Although the injury on his foot caused him to ache with every step, he did not show any pain at all. His attention was focused on the front, constantly scanning the surrounding environment.
Liu San followed behind, his eyes occasionally glancing at Qin Cang's right foot. He knew that Qin Cang had reached his limit on this trip, but he still gritted his teeth and persevered. This moved Liu San, yet also made him feel a little worried. He secretly made up his mind that no matter what happened next, he would not let Qin Cang bear all the risks alone again.
