Chapter 18: Outsmarting the Enemy

Zhang Wanqing and Fu Siyuan walked along the road to the city center, their shadows stretched long in the morning sun. They were filled with a sense of urgency, knowing that every second could affect the safety of the political situation and their lives.

Fu Siyuan's wound had been rebandaged, but his face was still pale. Zhang Wanqing cast a concerned look at him from time to time, but Fu Siyuan always responded with a firm look, indicating that he could still hold on.

"We have to be careful," Fu Siyuan whispered. "If they knew we had this evidence, they might resort to any means necessary."

Zhang Wanqing nodded, her eyes warily scanning the surroundings for any suspicious signs. "I've contacted a reliable legal expert, and he'll be waiting for us in his office."

They walked through the bustling streets and finally arrived in front of a modern office building. As the elevator slowly ascended, Zhang Wanqing's heartbeat quickened.

The legal expert's office was simple and professional, with various legal certificates and thank-you letters hanging on the wall. The expert was a middle-aged man wearing a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, his eyes revealing sharpness and wisdom.

"I hear you have something important to show me." His voice was calm, but with an authority that could not be ignored.

Zhang Wanqing handed him the photos and documents, explaining in detail their findings and their current situation. The legal expert carefully examined each document, his expression gradually becoming serious.

"This is indeed a significant discovery," he finally said, a hint of worry in his voice. "If this evidence is true, then this incident is more than just a simple environmental pollution case."

He stood up and paced back and forth in the office, thinking. "You must be very careful," he turned and looked at Zhang Wanqing and Fu Siyuan seriously. "I suggest you contact the police immediately, but it must be someone you can trust. At the same time, you need to protect yourselves, because they may retaliate against you."

Zhang Wanqing and Fu Siyuan exchanged a glance, knowing that this would be a difficult decision. They needed to find a police officer they could trust while ensuring their own safety.

After leaving the legal expert’s office, they walked along the busy street, their hearts filled with worry. Suddenly, Zhang Wanqing felt that someone was following them. She nervously grabbed Fu Siyuan’s arm and whispered, “I feel like we’re being followed.”

Fu Siyuan's eyes immediately sharpened, and he quickly scanned the surroundings, looking for a possible exit. "Don't be afraid, follow me," he whispered, and quickly led Zhang Wanqing through the crowd and ran towards an alley.

Their footsteps made a hurried sound on the wet ground, and their hearts were beating like drums. Just as they were about to reach the end of the alley, several men in black jackets suddenly appeared in front of them, blocking their way.

Zhang Wanqing felt a surge of fear in her heart, but she forced herself to calm down. She and Fu Siyuan stood back to back, ready to face the coming conflict.

"Hand over the documents and we can let you go." A man's voice was low and threatening.

Fu Siyuan sneered, his eyes devoid of any fear. "We won't let you succeed."

During the tense standoff, Zhang Wanqing's hand quietly reached into her bag and her fingers touched her cell phone. She knew it was their only hope.

Zhang Wanqing's hand gripped her phone tightly, her heart racing but her fingers surprisingly steady. She knew this might be her and Fu Siyuan's only chance of escape. She quickly dialed the emergency number on her phone, then quietly put it back in her bag while searching for possible cover.

Fu Siyuan noticed Zhang Wanqing's movements, and a flicker of approval flashed in his eyes. He knew they needed to buy time and wait for rescue. His eyes were fixed on the men in black, searching for their weaknesses.

"Do you really think that you few can stop us from revealing the truth?" Fu Siyuan's voice was calm and powerful. He tried to distract the other party with words.

One of the men in black was clearly uneasy, his eyes darting between his companions, as if searching for support. Zhang Wanqing seized this opportunity and quickly pointed to an alley behind them.

"There are police over there!" she shouted, a hint of panic in her voice.

The man in black instinctively turned to investigate. At that moment, Fu Siyuan sprang into action. He pushed the two men in front of him aside and, pulling Zhang Wanqing along, ran in the opposite direction. They traversed narrow alleys and leaped over puddles, their footsteps clattering on the slippery ground.

The men in black soon realized they had been tricked and angrily chased after them, but Zhang Wanqing and Fu Siyuan had already gotten there first, running into a busy market and blending into the crowd.

The hustle and bustle of the market provided them with cover as they weaved between the stalls, avoiding the sight of their pursuers. Zhang Wanqing's heart was pounding, but her mind was remarkably clear. She remembered the layout of the market and knew there was a back door that led to another street.

"Follow me!" she whispered to Fu Siyuan, then led him through rows of vegetable and fruit stalls and ran towards the back door of the market.

They successfully escaped through the back door and arrived at a quiet street. Zhang Wanqing quickly looked around and confirmed that no one was following them. Then she and Fu Siyuan slowed down and began to look for a safe place to take shelter temporarily.

They found a small restaurant, sat down in a corner, and tried to look inconspicuous.

Zhang Wanqing's hands were still shaking slightly. She took a few deep breaths, trying to calm herself down. Fu Siyuan's face was still pale, but there was a hint of relief in his eyes.

"We are safe for now." His voice was low and a little tired.

Zhang Wanqing nodded. She pulled the important documents from her bag and carefully checked them to make sure they were intact. "We can't stay here for long," she said firmly. "We need to find a police officer we can trust and hand over this evidence to them."

Fu Siyuan agreed to her plan, and they began to discuss the next steps. They knew that this battle was far from over.
