Chapter 17 Hidden Scars
Zhang Wanqing's hand gently touched Fu Siyuan's left arm. His muscles tensed beneath her fingertips, and the skin around the wound had turned white. She carefully unbuttoned his clothes, revealing the deep scratch. Rainwater mixed with blood flowed down his arm, dripping onto the damp ground with a soft sound.
She pulled out a first aid kit from her bag, her movements gentle and quick. Her fingers pressed gently on Fu Siyuan's wound, trying to stop the bleeding. Fu Siyuan's brow furrowed, but he made no sound, only clenching his teeth.
"Does it hurt?" Zhang Wanqing's voice trembled slightly, and her eyes were full of worry.
Fu Siyuan shook his head, his lips turning slightly pale. "This little injury is nothing. We need to get out of here as soon as possible."
Zhang Wanqing nodded, her movements quickening. She bandaged the wound with gauze and tape, then helped Fu Siyuan put his clothes back on. Her fingers gently slid across Fu Siyuan's skin, and she could feel his body trembling slightly.
They returned to the boat. Zhang Wanqing started the engine, and the boat slowly left the dock. The sea breeze howled, and the waves slammed against the hull, making a rhythmic sound. Fu Siyuan leaned against the corner of the cabin, his eyes closed and his brow furrowed.
Zhang Wanqing steered the boat, her eyes searching for directions in the darkness. She knew they needed to find a safe place for Fu Siyuan to rest and get his wounds treated better.
The boat rocked on the sea, and Zhang Wanqing's heart was filled with mixed emotions. She looked back at Fu Siyuan, his face still pale, but his eyes revealed an unyielding will. She knew they still had a lot of work to do and a lot of truth to uncover.
As the night deepened, the city lights grew hazy in the rain. Zhang Wanqing and Fu Siyuan sat on the deck of a small boat, their shadows swaying on the water.
The boat finally reached a remote dock, and Zhang Wanqing helped Fu Siyuan off. They found an abandoned warehouse filled with discarded fishing nets and dilapidated boats. Zhang Wanqing found some hay and a worn blanket and built a simple bed for Fu Siyuan.
She lit a candle, its dim light flickering in the warehouse. She sat beside Fu Siyuan, her eyes fixed on his face. His breathing gradually became steady, but his brow remained furrowed.
Zhang Wanqing took a deep breath. She knew they needed a plan. She opened the folder, revealing photos and documents. The photos showed the chemical plant's sewage pipes, black wastewater flowing into the river. The documents contained internal reports documenting the plant's cover-up of the pollution.
Her heart was filled with anger. She looked back at Fu Siyuan, whose eyes were tightly closed, as if he was in great pain. She leaned against Fu Siyuan, her eyes flickering in the candlelight.
Zhang Wanqing sat in a corner of a dilapidated warehouse, clutching the photos and documents that revealed the chemical plant's secrets. Her brow furrowed, her heart filled with unease. The weight of the evidence weighed heavily on her. She knew these weren't just pieces of paper and images; they were the health and futures of countless people.
Fu Siyuan lay quietly on the haystack, his breathing steady. His face remained pale, but the blood had stopped flowing. Zhang Wanqing tiptoed over to his side, checking his bandages to make sure everything was alright. Her gaze fell on his calm face, and a complex wave of emotions welled up within her. He had sacrificed so much for the truth, and she was determined not to let it go to waste.
As the night deepened, the sound of the waves outside the warehouse gradually subsided, only the occasional cry of a seagull piercing the silence. Zhang Wanqing returned to the pile of documents and began to study them carefully. She needed to find more clues, more evidence to support their report.
She scanned the documents until a photo caught her eye. It showed a senior manager from a chemical plant in a secret meeting with a government official. Both men wore nervous and cautious expressions, and the building in the background was the chemical plant.
Zhang Wanqing's heartbeat quickened as she realized this could be a major breakthrough. Could it be that the chemical plant, the people involved, and the government officials were colluding? The more she thought about it, the more terrified she became. If the chemical plant and government officials were colluding, then this pollution incident would be more than just a corporate violation.
She quickly put the photos and related documents together and decided to visit a senior legal expert early the next morning to seek his help and advice. She knew that this discovery might put them in greater danger, but she also knew that it was the key to uncovering the truth.
As the sky gradually brightened, Fu Siyuan slowly opened his eyes and saw Zhang Wanqing sitting among a pile of documents, studying them intently. He struggled to sit up, and although his wound still ached, his eyes gleamed with determination.
"Wanqing, what did you find?" His voice was hoarse but full of power.
Zhang Wanqing looked up, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Fu Siyuan, look at this." She handed the photo to Fu Siyuan and explained her idea and plan.
Fu Siyuan looked at the photo carefully, his brow furrowed. "This is indeed a significant discovery. We must proceed with caution, as this may provoke a strong counterattack from the other side."
Zhang Wanqing nodded. She knew Fu Siyuan was right. "I've already made a plan. We'll go find a legal expert first, and then decide what to do next."
Fu Siyuan agreed to her plan, and they quickly packed up and prepared to leave the warehouse. Although Fu Siyuan's wound was still painful, he insisted on going with her.
They walked out of the warehouse, the morning sun shining on them, bringing a touch of warmth and hope. Zhang Wanqing and Fu Siyuan walked side by side on the road to the truth, their steps firm and powerful.
