Love and choices across time and space
Chapter 44 This Li Yifeng is indeed a guy with ulterior motives.
In the heart of that bustling city stood a magnificent commercial building, housing the Lin Group's headquarters. Lin's father sat in his top-floor office, sunlight streaming through the enormous floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a stern, deep glow on his face. He wore a beautifully tailored dark suit, every wrinkle of which spoke of authority and decisiveness. His brow furrowed, his hand tightly clutching the investigative report on Li Yifeng, as if it held the key to his fate.
The office's decor exuded luxury and elegance. The massive solid wood desk radiated a rich luster, and the bookshelves behind it were filled with various business tomes and precious artworks. Father Lin's eyes were focused and sharp as he scanned every line of the report, anger and worry mingling within him.
"This Li Yifeng is indeed a guy with ulterior motives." Father Lin muttered to himself, with suppressed anger in his voice.
Every detail in the report reveals Li Yifeng's hidden past. Born in an impoverished mountain village, his family's plight didn't inspire a spirit of striving, but instead taught him to be opportunistic. He once betrayed a friend for the slightest gain, and his romantic life was fraught with complications, with multiple women involved.
Father Lin stood up abruptly and paced back and forth in the spacious office. His steps were heavy and urgent, each one seeming to vent his inner anger. "No, I absolutely cannot let Wan'er fall into this trap. I cannot let her happiness be ruined by this guy."
Meanwhile, Li Yifeng was completely unaware that Lin's father had gradually unmasked him. He remained immersed in his own dream, believing he could continue to deceive Lin Wan'er with sweet talk.
It was a sunny day with a gentle breeze. Li Yifeng had carefully selected a high-end French restaurant in a bustling area of the city, ready to please Lin Wan'er again. The restaurant's exterior was elegant and noble, with flowers placed under the French awning at the entrance.
Li Yifeng arrived early, wearing a tailored black suit with a crimson tie, his hair meticulously combed, and his shoes polished to a shine. He stood at the restaurant door, anxiously awaiting Lin Wan'er's arrival, a charming, carefully practiced smile plastered on his face.
Soon, a white limousine slowly pulled up to the restaurant entrance. Lin Wan'er stepped out, wearing a pale pink silk dress that fluttered in the breeze like a blooming peach blossom. Her hair was tied up, with a few strands playfully falling around her cheeks, adding a touch of gentleness and charm. Her delicate makeup accentuated her face's radiance, yet her eyes betrayed a hint of fatigue and confusion.
"Wan'er, you look as beautiful as a fairy today." Li Yifeng walked quickly towards her and opened the door of the restaurant for Lin Wan'er like a gentleman.
Lin Wan'er nodded slightly, forcing a polite smile. Entering the restaurant, the elegant surroundings made one feel as if they were transported to a romantic French palace. Crystal chandeliers emanated a soft glow, exquisite paintings hung on the walls, and the dining table was set with vibrant flowers and sparkling silverware.
Li Yifeng pulled out a chair for Lin Wan'er and waited for her to sit down before taking a seat across from her. "Wan'er, this restaurant's French steak is the best in the city. I reserved it especially for you." His voice was gentle and magnetic.
Lin Wan'er responded softly, "Thank you." But her tone lacked the enthusiasm of the past.
Li Yifeng seemed unaware of Lin Wan'er's indifference and continued to speak sweet nothings: "Wan'er, every time I see you, my heart feels like it's been blown by a spring breeze, and it's incredibly warm."
Lin Wan'er silently cut her steak without responding. She was filled with conflict and doubt. On the one hand, she didn't want to believe her father's findings, but on the other, she couldn't ignore Li Yifeng's recent unusual behavior.
Just then, Secretary Zhang, Lin's father's right-hand man, quietly entered the restaurant. Dressed in a dark business suit, he walked with a steady, light step. He approached Lin's father's corner and, in a low voice, reported the latest progress of the investigation.
Father Lin's expression darkened, his eyes flickering with anger. "Keep digging. We must find the most conclusive evidence and let Wan'er see his true colors." His voice was deep and firm.
Secretary Zhang nodded and said, "Don't worry, Mr. Lin, we will not let go of any clues." After that, he quickly left the restaurant and continued to devote himself to the intense investigation.
Meanwhile, Li Yifeng was still racking his brains to think of how to further deceive Lin Wan'er. He kept picking up food for her, trying to cover up his inner anxiety with his attentive actions.
A few days later, Lin's father decided not to wait and see, so he personally invited Li Yifeng to his office. The atmosphere in the office was oppressive and solemn, and the sunlight filtering through the huge floor-to-ceiling windows could not dispel the gloom.
The moment Li Yifeng walked into the office, an inexplicable fear surged in his heart. He saw Lin's father sitting behind the huge solid wood desk, his face as gloomy as an approaching storm.
"Uncle, are you looking for me?" Li Yifeng's voice trembled slightly. He tried to remain calm, but the panic in his eyes betrayed him.
Father Lin looked at him coldly, his eyes filled with disgust and anger. "Li Yifeng, I already know your true purpose." Father Lin's voice was like ice, and every word stung Li Yifeng's nerves.
Li Yifeng's face instantly turned pale as paper, and beads of sweat rolled down his forehead. But he still pretended to be calm and stammered, "Uncle, what are you talking about? I don't understand."
Father Lin sneered, took out a thick stack of documents from the drawer, and threw them hard on the table. "Stop pretending! All your dirty deeds are in here."
Li Yifeng picked up the document with trembling hands. When he saw the detailed record of his past misdeeds, his legs went weak and he almost collapsed to the ground.
"This... this..." Li Yifeng was incoherent, trying to defend himself, "Uncle, this is all a misunderstanding, someone framed me."
Father Lin stood up suddenly, pointed at Li Yifeng's nose and cursed: "You shameless man, you still dare to quibble! Look at all the things you have done, which one is not for money, to curry favor with the powerful? You approached Wan'er just for the wealth and status of our Lin family!"
Li Yifeng lowered his head, not daring to look directly into Lin's father's eyes. His body kept shaking as if he was under tremendous pressure.
After leaving Lin's father's office, Li Yifeng wandered the streets like a zombie, his heart filled with despair and fear, knowing that his dream was about to be shattered.
Lin Wan'er also began to notice a change in Li Yifeng. One day, she accidentally discovered that Li Yifeng was secretly answering the phone, his voice low and mysterious.
"Li Yifeng, who are you talking to on the phone?" Lin Wan'er suddenly appeared behind him and asked.
Li Yifeng was startled and hung up the phone in a hurry, a trace of panic flashing across his face. "No... No one, just an ordinary friend."
Lin Wan'er frowned. "Ordinary friends? Why are you being so sneaky?"
Li Yifeng quickly explained: "Wan'er, don't think too much, it's really nothing."
Lin Wan'er stared into his eyes, "Li Yifeng, I feel like you're hiding a lot of things from me. Shouldn't we be honest with each other?"
Li Yifeng avoided her gaze, "Wan'er, you really think too much, I just don't want to make you worry."
Lin Wan'er looked at him disappointedly, "Li Yifeng, I hope you can tell me the truth."
A few days later, Lin's father called Lin Wan'er to his study. The room was filled with the faint aroma of books and ink, and sunlight shone through the window onto the wooden floor.
"Wan'er, Dad already knows Li Yifeng's true purpose." Father Lin's voice was heavy and helpless.
Lin Wan'er looked at her father in surprise, "Dad, what did you say?"
Father Lin laid out the results of the investigation in front of Lin Wan'er one by one. Every piece of evidence was like a sharp sword, piercing her heart.
Lin Wan'er picked up the documents, her hands trembling, tears welling in her eyes. "Impossible, Dad! This must be a mistake."
Father Lin looked at his daughter distressedly, "Wan'er, Daddy won't lie to you. These are absolutely true facts."
Lin Wan'er covered her face with her hands, tears streaming down her face. "Why? Why would he do this to me?"
Father Lin patted Lin Wan'er's shoulder gently and said, "Wan'er, Dad will protect you and won't let you get hurt."
Lin Wan'er fell into deep pain and struggle, and she didn't know how to face this cruel reality.
At this moment, Li Yifeng was unwilling to lose everything, so he decided to make a final struggle. One starless night, he waited for Lin Wan'er in the garden downstairs of her house.
Li Yifeng was wearing a slightly worn windbreaker, his hair was a little messy from the wind, and his eyes were full of anxiety and expectation.
When Lin Wan'er came downstairs and saw him, an expression of indifference and disgust appeared on her face.
"Wan'er, I know you have misunderstandings about me now, but I really love you, and those are not true." Li Yifeng said anxiously.
Lin Wan'er looked at him, her eyes filled with disappointment and anger. "Li Yifeng, I don't know whether I should believe you anymore."
Li Yifeng stepped forward and tried to hold Lin Wan'er's hand. "Wan'er, give me a chance and let me prove it to you."
Lin Wan'er fiercely shook off his hand, "Li Yifeng, I need time to calm down. Don't bother me anymore."
After saying that, Lin Wan'er turned around and ran back home, leaving Li Yifeng alone shivering in the cold wind.
Li Yifeng watched Lin Wan'er leave, his heart filled with despair and regret. Lin's father, who witnessed all this from the window, became even more determined to keep Li Yifeng away from Lin Wan'er's life.
